How To Make A Greenery Table Garland
Don’t know where to start with wedding DIY? There’s one project that everyone can do: our fresh greenery table garland how-to.
Greenery, AKA foliage, is perfect for wedding décor. It’s kind to your budget – you’ll find eucalyptus, willow, ivy and moss and other varieties to be very cost-effective, particularly compared to the price of flowers. Greenery decorations are also highly effective, bringing a vibrant, botanical feel to your ceremony and reception spaces. And it’s a look that suits all kinds of wedding venues, whether elegant country houses or rustic barns.
But the best bit? Foliage is really easy to work with if you want to create your own décor. Wedding DIY has been popular for a good while now, with tutorials aplenty showing you how to add personalised touches to your day, from bouquet making to creating your own stationery. While ideas like these may be a super-creative couples idea of heaven, not-so-crafty couples won’t feeling so keen to bring out the PVA glue and ribbon.
Our greenery table garland project is ideal for both beginners and craft-experts. Its simple enough to keep you from tearing your hair out, but you can also put your own unique spin on the look: play with different textures of foliage change the pot colours to match your scheme choose different types of candle style. You’ll end up with a stunning table decoration that’ll be the decorative highlight of your reception.
Add Earthy Fragrance With Herbs
An herb garland can be made of rosemary, bay, basil, sage, mint or other favorite fragrances. Herbs can also be mixed with other foliage. Fresh herbs add both texture and color. Some people attribute special meaning to specific herbs and design their garland to offer a floral message along with décor.

Feed in the hydrangea, rhododendron, and rosemary along the garland wherever you want them. Depending on where the garland is to be displayed, it may be easier to hang up the line of foliage first and then add the flowers along its length. In this way, less of the garland is likely to come adrift when you hang it in position.
Top tip: When laying out the foliage, think of it as like a long, fat sausage, and the fatter you can make it the better but there are no hard-and-fast rules for making this project.

Which Flowers And Foliages Work Best For Garlands
When creating fresh garlands, it can be difficult to choose from the many flower and foliage possibilities. A garland can be made from fresh greenery, herbs, flowers, fruits or any combination. Foliage favorites include spiral, silver dollar, parvi, gunnii and seeded eucalyptus.
Other popular choices include magnolia, ivy, olive leaf, ruscus, salal, smilax, sprengeri, tree fern and plumosa. Fresh flowers often seen in garland designs include roses, garden roses, spray roses, peonies, carnations, mini carnations, astilbe, waxflower, gypsophilia, limonium, mums, lisianthus and eryngium to name a few.

Diy Wedding Babys Breath & Roses
Gypsophila aka Babys breath is such a beautiful flower- and in my opinion, one that is often overlooked for simple elegance. A lot of people dont look at babys breath and think of it as a center stage kind of flower- they see it more as a filler. Which in fairness, it is a filler flower. But it is so much more than that.
It is timeless, romantic, elegant, dainty and is absolutely beautiful. When we were talking about wedding reception decor for the tables Diem was originally thinking arrangements for each of the 8 tables.
Side note: You will have to forgive the lighting on some of these photos- my phone snaps really picked up that yellow tone of their lighting.
We had white roses with babys breath in mind and then we thought about doing garlands. I checked into ordering garlands made out of babys breath- and the cost for 8 tables and the sweethearts table with a larger arrangement was on the pricey side. But I do have a source at the flower market who makes garlands and wreaths so I reached out to see what the cost was directly through him. It was far more reasonable and about the same price as buying bunches and wiring them together yourself. So, we ordered 7 garlands for the tables and white roses to customize.
Heres Where To Find Everything Youll Need
You can find all the flowers and foliages used in the video at BloomsbytheBox, GlobalRose and FlowerExplosion. BloomsbytheBox and FlowerExplosion also offer pre-made garland in several lengths as well.
You can also buy the flowers and foliages you need from a local florist, often at pretty competitive prices. You can also order custom, pre-made garlands from them too. Always worth checking out, IMHO!
If you want to substitute or add some silk flowers rather than fresh, you can find an outstanding selection online at NearlyNatural, and at many craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels, or by ordering them through your local florist.
One other bit of advice, if I may. Because you are using fresh foliages for the garland, go ahead and substitute silk flowers if you want to. They will look great, as the fresh greens will keep your wedding garland retain its lifelike appearance.

4-inch wide raquettes are a good fit for a long continuous span of flowers that need a water source. Choose a combination of sizes that will run the length of the table end-to-end to create the look of a garland. Other possibilities for tight spaces: Table Decos and IGLU Grande Holders. Both allow you to create a garland effect by linking the designs with whatever fresh and decorative materials you like. Both also have a plastic cage for stem support and eyelets.
