Formal Dress Code For Wedding
Before we begin, we would answer the question, what is a formal dress code?. Formal wedding attire is the traditional dress code for the westerners. It is split into the day dress and evening attire. The former which can be a white tie flies until 6 pm. The later which is a black tie will fly for evening events.
You wear them to weddings, funerals, christening, formal dinners, etc. I hope this sheds some clarity on the semi vs formal debate. A lot of people cannot differentiate them.
You can rock formal wears and remain stylish. All you have to do is to read down and stick to our guide. We bring what to wear to a formal wedding for ladies and gentlemen.
You Should Defer To The Engaged Couple If You Are Invited To A Themed Wedding
If you are invited to a themed wedding, Sabatino recommends turning to the engaged couple for advice on what to wear.
If you are going to do that as the host, you need to be specific in what youre expecting people to wear, she said.
But as a general rule, Brown recommends against attending in full costume. You never want to show up to a wedding, even if its a theme wedding, feeling like youre in a costume, Brown said.
She suggests embracing the theme through accessories rather than a full ensemble.
I had a bride who wanted to do a country Western rehearsal dinner because she and her fiance had met in Santa Fe, Brown said. So we accessorized a very cute dress with white boots, a cowboy hat, and turquoise jewelry.
How To Wear A Skirt To A Wedding
Wearing a skirt to a wedding is appropriate as long as it isnt too casual. A skirt can be a good option for semi-formal weddings. If you want to wear a skirt, choose one that is an appropriate length and go for something that is stylish and graceful. As a rule of thumb, if you cant wear it for an evening event, you should not wear it to a wedding. Try avoiding skirts that are:
- Too revealing
- Too business-like

Alter Pieces You Already Own
Alterations can play a large role in what to wear to a wedding as a guest. If you have a busy wedding season, it might not be financially feasible to invest in new outfits for every event. So, in addition to accessorizing thoughtfully, experts recommend altering pieces you already own to change up their look.
“The number one key to looking and feeling your best is to make sure that you’re nailing the fit of your garments,” says Sacawa. “If the fit’s not right, that can affect your confidence.” Adds Durham: “You never want to wear an outfit you have to tug up or down. You can breathe new life into the clothes you already have by raising or lowering the hem of a skirt or creating a new silhouette.”
A Casual Backyard Or Outdoor Wedding
DO: Wear a short, playful dress in pastel colors. You can even wear flats if the wedding will be in the grass and is super casual, says Hovhannisyan. DONT: Overdress. When figuring out what to wear to a wedding, remember that its rude to look more formal than the bride, and if the wedding is casual, her dress might be on the more simple side, she explains. So keep the embellishment and fancy details to a minimum! Also, dont forget about the weather and the setting. Dont wear something youll regret getting dirty, and dont wear suede if it looks like rain. You might want to bring an extra pair of shoes with you in case the weather does get messy.

What Do I Wear To A Morning Wedding
For a morning ceremony, the ideal colors are the PASTEL ones: sky blue, pale beige pink, baby blue, sage green, mauve and light grey. Its known that its forbidden to wear white, dark and red dresses at weddings. But if your clothing wardrobe is total black, a good alternative is BLUE: navy blue or very dark blue.
Is it OK to wear long dress to wedding?
For a more formal wedding, it is typically expected that female guests wear a long dress. But instead of breaking out the gown you wore to prom, try wearing a more appropriate evening gown. If the wedding is during the day, a pretty maxi dress should do the trick.
Is it OK to wear cream to a wedding?
In general, its not appropriate for guests to wear white to a wedding. When youre a guest at a wedding, the most important thing to keep in mind is not to upstage or upset the bride, says wedding dress designer Madeline Gardner. Its safe to stay away from any outfits that are predominantly white, cream or ivory.

Classic Attire And Colors
If you are ever in doubt about what colors are okay to wear to weddings, choose conservative, classic attire. A simple dress for women and a dark suit and tie for men are almost always fashionable. Once you have carefully and thoughtfully selected your clothing for the wedding, relax. The bride and groom will be happy that you came to share in their special day.

Don’t Worry About A Hat
Hats were once de rigeur at formal weddings in the UK, along with their opinion-dividing cousin, the fascinator. It’s far less common nowadays – if a couple wants the female guests wearing hats, they will likely put this on their invitations. If it isnt mentioned, you will find many guests forgo hats and fascinators, so do what makes you feel most comfortable. You could always add a hair accessory to give your look that extra something special.

Cocktail Wedding Attire For Guests
Cocktail attire is often required for semi-formal weddings. It is especially common for evening weddings that do not include a formal, sit-down meal. While the dress code is more sophisticated than smart casual, it is still somewhat relaxed, meaning you can have fun with your outfit. Try a cocktail dress in a unique style or chic separates. Although cocktail dresses are traditionally knee-length, today anything shorter than an evening dress is acceptable. However, be careful not to go too short.
Black Tie Optional Or Formal
One step down from black tie, this dress code indicates men should opt for a tuxedo or dark suit, preferably with a white button-down shirt underneath. Nicer dress shoes are appropriate. Ladies should wear either a floor-length evening gown, a formal pantsuit or a formal cocktail dress. Go for heels rather than wedges or sandals.

Is A Short Dress Okay For A Formal Wedding
As a precaution, you should avoid short dresses when attending formal weddings. The most accepted dress lengths would be from the knees to your ankles.
If you are still unsure about the dress code, contact the marrying couple or the party planners to get an exact estimate of how long your dress should be.
What Type Of Accessories Should You Wear With Semi Formal Wedding Attire
Now for the fun part! Just because semi formal wedding attire doesnt call for the bling of black tie or the endless options of a casual wedding, that doesnt mean you cant be playful with your accessories.
If you outfit is more on the casual side, dress it up with some statement jewelry or a chic pair of heels. For fits that are leaning formal, add some personality with a birthstone necklace or Euphoria-inspired nails.
When accessorizing suits, ties are not mandatory but if the mood strikes, dont be afraid to choose something with a bit of color. For shoes, dapper is always better, so we recommend a classy pair of dress shoes, oxfords, or loafers. And, while pocket squares and cufflinks are out for semi formal wedding attire, a sleek watch and classy belt will always be in.

Can You Wear Black To A Wedding
In the past, black was seen as a funeral color thats not appropriate for weddings. Its even been thought of as bad luck. Wearing a very gloomy black outfit isnt a good idea. However, a black dress with floral embroidery, colorful accessories or bright jewelry is totally fine. Make sure your black outfit has some element of color or sparkle to make it appropriate.
What Is Formal Attire
Formal attire is definitely defined as a full-length gown, very fancy cocktail attire from dresses to a really glamorous pantsuit. When it comes to the men, formal wedding attire means a tuxedo. And definitely, a bow tie, which I love! The only time a tuxedo is not required is when its black-tie optional. The option if you will is to go with a very nice dark suit. Navy is my favorite, but black works great too!. However, for women, formal attire, black tie, white tie and black tie optional all mean beautiful gowns.
There are several options to choose from when it comes to formal wedding attire. From floor-length gowns that hug the body that are simple, to embellished beautiful voluminous gowns. You can play with your hem a bit like Cathy and I did in todays post with tea lengths or high lows. Its a fun modern take on a formal look. My number one tip though is to always think about fabric. This is not the time to bring out cotton floor length maxis. Instead, choose fabrics like satin, lace and tafetta.

Under $150 Formal Dresses
So many great dresses in todays post. But some may be on the pricier end. And while not everyone may not have the budget for a fancy ball gown, I also understand that even if you DO, you may not want to spend a ton on something youll only wear once or twice. Here are some of my favorite formal dresses for formal wedding dress codes that are all under $150.
Black Tie Wedding Accessories
Lastly, you want to ensure your accessories also match the dress code. Leave the espadrilles and leather purses at home. This night calls for sequins, sparkles and all things dressy. I like to always bring out my fun small bags like this calf hair lady bag, or a sequined clutch. For shoes, You can always be safe in these strappy Steven Madden shoes and get away with them just fine. But to go over the top and really lean into the formal attire, opt for sparkles! Plus, love these under $100 ones that are for sure going to be comfy with that block heel.
Jewelry can go a few ways. I like to keep things simple especially if the dress is bold. A simple gold hoop or stud works. But if you want something more fun, a sparkly earring or tassel like I did above is always a great choice.
What Should You Wear To A Wedding
Evening attire is recommended here. According to Corry, this often entails a dark tuxedo, a white dress shirt, a corresponding bow tie, a cummerbund, and suspenders . Dress shoes, such as oxfords, are appropriate. Women can dress up in a long gown or a cocktail dress. Men should wear a suit and tie if possible.
In the South, it’s traditional to wear a jacket and tie. In the West, it’s common to see men wearing jeans and a button-up shirt. In the Midwest, it’s common to see men wearing a suit. In the Northeast, it’s common to see men wearing a tuxedo.
If you have an event scheduled on a weekday, you should still try to look presentable. No one wants to see their favorite celebrity at a wedding dressed down.
Wedding guests should arrive 15 minutes before the ceremony begins for best seating arrangement. After the ceremony, guests should stay for the reception or party, depending on what happens next. If there is no reception, then guests should leave after the bride and groom have said their goodbyes.
You should also bring some form of identification with you to the wedding – either your driver’s license or passport will do.

Winter Wedding Guest Dresses
During the colder months, its natural that youll want to pick a dress that is warmer to wear or will need to include a coat or jacket in your outfit. One good option is to select a long-sleeve cocktail dress with a higher neck and slightly longer skirt. This will still look extremely elegant but will keep you warm during the wedding. Make sure any jacket or coat you wear over your dress will suit the theme if in doubt, opt for a tailored blazer or jacket with suit-style lapels.
