When To Get A Wedding Dress Altered And Fitted

Add Sleeves to Your Wedding Dress! Before & After Bridal Alterations

If youre trying to lose weight youre going to have to get your wedding dress altered in one way or another. After all, fit is everything, because the last thing you need is a bridal gown that makes you uncomfortable on your wedding day. But when should you get that wedding dress altered exactly?

Timing is important. So, you should have your wedding dress altered following the purchase. You should have the dress scheduled for alteration eight to twelve weeks before your big day to give the seamstresses ample time to work on the dress. Also, the final fitting should be two weeks before your big day.

The alteration can cost you between $50 and $1,000. More often than not, the exact amount you pay for the alteration depends on the changes you want to make to the dress.

A bridal gown process may require two or three fitting sessions, with the first one possibly lasting up to an hour-long. For the alteration and fitting process, the bridal salon may recommend you to a reliable tailor or have one of the in-house seamstresses work with you throughout the entire process.

Be Specific About What You Want

Its important to be specific with the tailor about what you want when it comes to your wedding dressnot only about how you want your dress to look, but how you want it to feel. Comfort is key, but so is your vision for the dress. Do you want to take out straps? Do you want to add more volume to the skirt? Do you need to alter the neckline? Dont be afraid to ask questions and to voice your opinions. At the same time, take in the advice and opinion of your seamstress because chances are they have seen it all and have sound advice.

Months Before Your Wedding

  • Purchase your gown.

Around the nine-month mark you should make a final decision on a gown and put down a deposit. It can take up to six months for your dress to be built and then shipped to your salon. So, give yourself enough time putting a down payment on your dress as soon as you know its the one.

When Should I Start My Alterations

Alteration timelines vary from bride to bride. If you are loosing weight or gaining muscle mass through wedding planning, you will start alterations closer to your wedding date than a bride who keeps a stable weight and body mass. Standard alterations start at about 8 weeks before your wedding however, seamstresses can work with less than 8 weeks. At The Bridal Finery we check in and remind our clients to book their alterations appointment. When it gets closer to the wedding, there is so much going on. Its best to book the first alterations appointment so you can block the time off of your schedule.

Months Before Your Wedding: First Fitting

Wedding Dress Alterations Before And After

Aim to have your first alterations appointment on the books at least three months before your big day. This will be the lengthiest appointment, since it’s when most of the work will be done on your dress. Your seamstress will add pins to the hemline, straps, waist and any other areas that need adjusting, so don’t be alarmed if it doesn’t look like your dream wedding dress right off the bat. This is also when you should speak up if you want to make any major changes to the style.

How Many Fittings Are Needed For A Wedding Dress

Every dress is different and comes with its own set of alteration needs. On average 3-4 fittings are needed. The first fitting is to review what needs to be tailored and modified. The second fitting is to adjust the bodice a little more and start working on the them. The third fitting is to finalize everything. The fourth fitting is to try the dress on one last time and pick it up. Some seamstresses dont need as many fittings however, that can be risky business. It may mean they are rushing the work and trying to tailor as many dresses as possible instead of taking their time to alter it the right way.

Can A Seamstress Make My Dress More Comfortable To Wear

This depends on the dress, but Anna tells us that there are a few tricks that she can employ! “For example, if the arm hole area is a bit uncomfortable, I can lower the arm hole so you have more room. Some dresses can be let out a little for more movement, and underskirts and nets can be removed.”

What To Expect At The First Fitting

Your first try will take about an hour. Once you wear the dress, your seamstress will pin the dress in question with the adjustments necessary to give you an idea of how your dress will look when fitted. If your wedding dress has a train, now is a good time to consider the options for how to hold or hang it after the ceremony. After the first fitting, each subsequent fitting should take less time since the touch-ups will be almost complete.

8-month deadline for touch-ups

A large number of shops only have samples of the different models and place orders for their customers. We recommend an average delay of eight months, after the first fitting, for the order to receive her dress in time for the wedding. The bride will have to go to a second fitting at the reception of the dress to prepare the alterations. There are almost always, moreover, even if there has been no change in the measurements of the future bride since the order of the dress.

What Are Wedding Dress Alterations

If you’ve never shopped for a wedding dress before, you may be surprised to find out exactly how the process works once you get started. While you’re shopping at a bridal boutique, you’ll try on sample wedding dresses to ultimately find one that you love. When you’ve made your decision, your bridal stylist takes your professional measurements, and then includes those with the order information that is sent to the designer when you purchase your dress. Based on their size chart, the designer creates a made-to-order version of that gown in whichever size is closest to your measurements. But because most people are in between wedding dress sizes and no two bodies are exactly the same, the process doesn’t end there.

“Even with exact measurements, all gowns will require some alterations to fit perfectly,” says Emily Erdly, owner at Lovely Bride Charleston and Lovely Bride Atlanta.

Since the dress will already be fairly close to your size based on the measurements, you shouldn’t need too many adjustmentsbut you should still plan for a few basic changes for a perfect fit.

“Common alterations include hemming , adding a bustle , adjusting the length of straps sleeves, and taking the dress in but also letting it out a bit ,” says Erdly.

Our Wedding Guest Dress Tips

Youve RSVPd yes! and booked your stay, now what will you wear? After the bridal shower dress and rehearsal dinner dress comes the wedding. No matter if its a wedding for your friend or for your third cousin, youll want a dress that makes you feel like a tasteful attendee of the ceremony and life-of-the-party at the reception. We have all the perfect styles youre looking for, for every type of wedding.

Tip 1: Understand the etiquette

What makes a dress wedding-guest appropriate? Its able to transition from traditions to celebrations, and matches the type of wedding youre attending. While there are some traditional rules to follow such as not wearing white or black the rest is up for interpretation. Its best to check with the bride and groom, or someone else in the wedding party, if theres a dress code. These days there are fewer wedding guest dress etiquette rules. Even jumpsuits have become wedding appropriate for women.

Our biggest piece of advice? Its best to follow traditional rules if you dont know the couple well.

Tip 2: Match your dress to the essence of the wedding

There are certain dresses that match different types of weddings. For example, a strapless sequin gown wouldnt be appropriate for a simple, outdoor beach wedding. And a light wrap dress would be suitable as a casual wedding guest dress but not sophisticated enough for a black tie evening reception.

Tip 3: Look out for dress code clues

Tip 5: Know the tried-and-true styles
