What Do Wedding Rings Mean
A wedding ring simply indicates to others that a person is married. When a person sees you wearing your wedding ring, it signifies to them that you are in a committed relationship with another and they should act accordingly.
The practice of wearing wedding rings can reportedly trace back to Ancient Egypt, where spouses were depicted exchanging rings of braided twine. This is said to be a symbol of their eternal love as Egyptians believed circles to be a sign of eternity.
The Romans and Greeks also practiced wearing wedding rings as part of a womans dowry and later a sign of a womans fidelity to her husband. This practice went on to pass to the Christians, the rest of Europe, and then the rest of the world. Originally, only a woman would wear both engagement and wedding rings, but by the 1900s, both spouses would exchange rings.
Although some cultures do not practice exchanging wedding rings, this is a common wedding practice in the Philippines due to our predominantly Catholic religion.
The Day Of The Wedding
The tradition of a wedding ring to symbolize marriage began in Egypt almost 5,000 years ago. The circular shape of the ring is intended to represent eternity, with no beginning or end, just like the couples enduring love for another. Some believe the center of the ring also has significance and represents a gateway and everlasting love. Typically, the couple will exchange rings during their wedding ceremony by placing the wedding band on the left ring finger after saying their vows, but this begs the question, where do you put the engagement ring in the meantime?

But Theres A Problem To Doing This
Because the Engagement Ring is already there! This adds confusion.
Do you Remove the Engagement Ring, put the Wedding Ring on, then Replace the Engagement Ring with hundreds of people watching? Lots of couples dont know. Or, do you slip the Wedding Band on, leaving the Engagement Ring where its at, and have her switch the order later, after the Wedding?
Ill tell you the best two things to do, so you dont make the transition any more confusing than it really is!
Here Are Your Choices:
1) Have her start the Wedding without Rings on her finger, and slip them BOTH on at the same time during the Ceremony. Or
2) Like I already said, just Slide the Wedding Ring on behind the Engagement Ring and have her swap their places later.
You may have problems with the latter if the Wedding Ring is an Insert. (An Insert or Jacket, is where the Engagement Ring slips inside of two Rings
Thats why they call it an Insert!)

Decide Who Will Be Holding The Wedding Rings In The Ceremony
As Wedding Officiant, first we need to talk to our couples about deciding who will hold and keep the wedding rings during the ceremony. I ask them about this when I conduct my ceremony planning session with the couple six weeks before the ceremony. I have a spreadsheet and a full training module for how to run this meeting in my full online course for wedding officiants called Unboring!Wedding Academy.
Sometimes, the person who carries the rings into the ceremony space and the person who keeps the rings during the ceremony are not the same person. A lot of the time, the couple will ask a Ring Bearer to carry the rings in this is often a young man who will come down the aisle presenting the rings tied to a pillow or displayed in an ornamental box, for example. So in the planning session, if our couple want a Ring Bearer to walk the rings down the aisle, we need a clear plan: who does the Ring Bearer give the rings to?
In a traditional ceremony, the ring keeper is the Best Man, and he holds the rings until called upon for the Ring Exchange in the wedding ceremony. But it doesnt have to be the Best Man anything goes here. Ive had couples choose one ring to go to the Best Man and the other to the Maid of Honour. Ive had some couples choose their dog to come forward with the rings tied to her collar. Ive had couples choose Grampa to come forward from the front row. You get the picture. Ask your couple what theyd like to do here, because its really up to them.
