Wedding Tips & Advice : How to Reply to an RSVP for a Wedding Invitation

Many couples consider their wedding website or social media group their primary means of communication with guests. Whether youre using a Facebook group or creating a custom site about your wedding, youll want to include this info on your wedding invitation details card.

Some couples provide additional announcements for guests via group emails and text messages, which can be a great way to ensure guests see any announcements youve made on your website or social media posts.

Include A Message In The Details Panel

Examples:

  • Out of concern for our guests, in order to attend this celebration you and your plus-one must be fully vaccinated.
  • Our venue requires that all guests show proof of vaccination upon entry. Please plan accordingly.
  • COVID-19 vaccination required to attend see RSVP page for more details.

If you dont feel comfortable asking invitees directly about their vaccination status, no sweat. The details panel is highly customizable, and, in turn, a perfect place for you to include a general message to all invitees and to do so prior to their submission of RSVP.

If after going this route, you want to receive more specific information, you can always reach out to guests through Greenvelopes in-account direct messaging tool.

Don’t Give Them A Tight Deadline

When you pick an RSVP date, take into account that you’ll have to follow up on many people. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to do this. So if you mail your invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding, your RSVP date should be three to four weeks before. Making the date any closer will only stress you out, and that’s not what you need a few weeks before getting married!

How Can Guests Rsvp To Your Wedding Online

There are a few different ways to request digital wedding RSVPs from loved ones. The most popular option is to use your wedding website. If you use The Knot’s wedding website builder, guests can take advantage of an easy-to-use online RSVP feature that instantly collects responses. But if you don’t want to create a full-blown wedding website, there are other sites specifically designed for collecting RSVPs. A quick Google search will bring up your options. It’s also acceptable to request email RSVPs from your loved onesâjust beware of replies getting lost in your spam folder. Our tip: Create a separate email folder specifically for your wedding RSVPs so they’re all in one place if you need to double-check something.

Formal Response Card Etiquette

A few weeks before the wedding, it may be a good idea to send a reminder to everyone who has sent their RSVPs. This is to see if changes need to be made, such as a guest having to miss the wedding because of an important appointment. This may open the door for another guest who wanted to attend the wedding but originally could not go.

You will also need the final headcount for wedding-related services such as ushers and caterers.

What Does Rsvp Mean On Wedding Invitations

RSVP is simply the shortened French phrase, Respondez Sil Vous Plait which translates as Please Respond. Hence we also call them Response or Reply cards.

The custom is, at the bottom of wedding invitations, to ask your guests to respond to your invitation by a certain date. You can give your guests an option of filling out and returning your Response card, or you can ask them to RSVP via email, text message, phone call, or even your wedding website.

What If A Guest Forgets To Write Their Name On The Rsvp Card

It will happen. I had multiple RSVP cards show up without names on them some of them with delightfully accepts and others with regretfully decline. To this day, this trick I am going to share with you was actually some of the best wedding advice I received! One of my friends who had already been married told me to number the back of each of my RSVP cards, and respectively number all the addresses on my guest list. For each invitation I stuffed, I made sure to include the correctly numbered RSVP card that correlated with the number by the guests name on the address sheet. It made my life so much easier. Not to mention, I almost got excited when one showed up without a name because then I was able to refer to my hand-dandy numbered address list to solve whos RSVP it was! Nerdy, I know, but also useful nonetheless!

I hope that these tips & tricks for wording, designing, and mailing your RSVP cards have aided you in your own wedding journey! If you have any other questions, or if youre interested in having me design your wedding stationery, dont hesitate to reach out to me HERE.

I love that I kept all of my RSVP cards! They are such a fun keepsake from our wedding and I love seeing the little notes that people included when they sent them back!

Choosing Your Wedding Invitation Style

The wording and design, from typeface to the color, weight, and even texture of the paper, all subtly shape how your wedding will be perceived. If you’re planning a casual beach wedding, for example, then that should be conveyed from the start in the design of the invitation. On the other hand, if you picture your wedding guests in tuxedos and floor-length gowns, then the invitation should be equally formal in tone and style. Here are more style options to consider when creating your wedding invitations.

Invest In Matching Stationery

The devil is in the detail, or so they say. When youre picking out your stationery, ensure that it matches for an elegant effect. If you’ve chosen to have a separate RSVP card for guests to fill out and mail back to you, these would typically come with their own matching envelopes, which should be pre-addressed and stamped for convenience, suggests Ring.

Rsvp Response Wording: Is It Ok To Ask Guests To Rsvp Online

Absolutely! You can ask people to email or text their responses to you, or to submit their response on your wedding website. You can add this information at the bottom of your invitation BUT the phone number, email address or website address MIGHT look a bit ugly on your lovely invite. So, you could include the information on a separate card within the envelope if youd prefer.

Should You Still Include Physical Reply Cards

It’s totally up to you whether or not you want to include physical response cards as well as a digital RSVP option. If you’re certain that all of your guests will be comfortable using an online wedding RSVP site, by all means forgo the paper. Another idea is to include a phone number as an alternative option. That way, your less tech-savvy loved ones can call or text to submit their reply. Since you and your partner will be very busy in the leadup to your wedding day, we suggest appointing a member of the wedding party to handle phone RSVPs.

How To Rsvp By Post To A Wedding Invitation

Weddings are special and enjoyable events, however they also come with certain etiquette and expectations. We wanted to provide some suggested wording and guidance on how to reply to a wedding invitation.

Responding

Upon receiving a wedding invitation, it is common to read Répondez s’il vous plaît or R.S.V.P. towards the bottom of the invitation. Translated, it literally means ‘Respond if you please’, and the desired response is for you to let the hosts know your response to whether you can attend, or not, and perhaps some other questions they ask.

These days there is all manner of methods for how the host would like to receive the response email, wedding websites, response cards or no preferred method.

While you should always endeavour to use the method prescribed by the host, a handwritten response as a standalone or, in addition to the prescribed manner is a beautiful way to leave an impression with the host – remember, they are very excited about their big day and it is wonderful to see someone take the time to echo that excitement.

Timing

Responses help the hosts keep track of the guest list, which is an important and often stressful part of the wedding planning process. Therefore when invited to a wedding a guests duty is to respond promptly confirming your attendance or regrets.

Reminders Before Rsvps Are Due

If your RSVPs arent due quite yet, you can still politely try to remind guests to respond. We dont recommend reaching out directly just yet it may seem a bit pushy but you can use your wedding website, social media, or even email if you send updates about your wedding to subtly remind guests to RSVP.

At this point in your wedding timeline, gently remind guests their options to RSVP. Try this RSVP reminder wording on your social media post or wedding website update:

We are so excited to get married and celebrate with friends and family!

Another option could tie in with an update about your planning process, such as:

We just met with our caterer to finalize the menu at our wedding. With only 8 weeks until the big day, were so excited to share our joy with our loved ones!

Dont forget to choose your meal for the wedding when you RSVP its going to be tasty! If you have any questions about the wedding, feel free to reach out to us!

If you’re asking your guests to RSVP online, you don’t need to include an RSVP card, but a website may look out of place at the bottom of your formal wedding invites. Include a small card with the RSVP information on it instead.

Make It Easy To Reply

Include the phone number or email address if you wish to receive RSVPs that way. Have a system for collecting all of the information you need. A reply card — stamped and addressed — makes it easy for your guests to fill in their names, their food choices if asked, and any other information you need from them.

Mailed Invitation With Rsvp Card

Fill in the card and mail it back in the enclosed envelope before the date listed, or preferably as soon as you receive it. Check to see if the event allows a plus one. If it does, double check that your date can make it before you RSVP for them.

How to fill out a wedding RSVP

Wedding invitations commonly include an RSVP card and a pre-addressed envelope. The card may be as simple as writing your name and checking off a plus one and dining choices, or it may include a bit more space for a thoughtful note. If there is blank space on the card you are expected to write a note.

It is also common for a wedding RSVP card to include an M with a blank line after it. Following the M, you should write your title and name.

If you are unsure if you can bring a plus one, look to the invitation envelope to see if and guest is clearly stated. Asking to bring a guest if the wedding invitation doesnt explicitly say that you can is considered inappropriate. It may cause a strain on the happy couples finances.

And Finallysend Your Rsvp Back On Time

Wedding attendees should reply in time for the couple to receive the RSVP card back by the requested due date.

But our best advice is to reply as soon as possible after receiving the wedding invitations. If you respond that you will be attending the wedding and then later find out you wont be able to make it, call the couple as soon as possible to let them know.

Remember – as the wedding date gets closer, couples are often creating what can be a very complicated seating plan and confirming head count with vendors. Give them as much time as possible to adjust it as necessary.

What Does Rsvp Actually Mean

The word RSVP is derived from the French phrase Répondez sil vous plaît, which simply translates to please respond. When you RSVP to a wedding invitation, youre confirming either your attendance or non-attendance on the day.

Requesting and tracking RSVPs allows a couple to confirm their guest numbers and use this information to finalize everything from catering and furniture hire to place cards and seating charts. An RSVP request may also be used to confirm important details like meal selections, dietary preferences and plus-ones, too.

How To Rsvp: Physical Invitations

If youve received a traditional invitation in the post, it may come with a seperate RSVP card and pre-addressed envelope. The RSVP card will either include a pre-printed template with specific questions, or be left blank for you to write your own response message.

If the RSVP card has a pre-printed template:

In this situation, all you need to do is fill in the blank areas and/or tick the boxes requested by the couple. Generally, this will include details like:

  • Your name
  • Your RSVP response: attending or not attending
  • Number of guests attending
  • Just for fun questions like dance floor requests or marriage advice.

A couple of things to keep in mind as you complete these details are:

  • Use both your first and last name to avoid confusion especially if its a large wedding!
  • Follow the formatting outlined on the RSVP card. Some more traditional/formal RSVP cards may include a pre-printed M before the name line. This is simply a prompt to include your title before your name for example, Mrs Sally Smith.
  • If the RSVP card includes just for fun questions, make the effort to answer them! While they might not be necessary to confirm your attendance, the couple obviously wants to involve you in their celebration.

If the RSVP card is blank:

A blank RSVP card will require you to write your own personal response. This should be a couple of brief sentences to confirm your name, attendance/non-attendance, and any other details requested in the RSVP instructions.
