Start Arranging The Flowers

It is essential to determine your overall height and design goal for your bouquet. Do you like it long or do you like it short? This will affect how you are placing the flowers together, as well as cutting the stems accordingly.

There really isnt a hard rule in arranging your flowers, especially if you are going for a more natural, organic, and garden-style arrangement.

However, here are some tips that you can use when you are working with specific floral varieties:

  • Main flowers are usually the ones with sturdy stems, like Roses and Carnations are best to start with as they are the focal flowers.
  • Soft stemmed flowers like Tulips, Ranunculus, Gerbera Daisies, and need to be placed in between flowers with sturdy stems like Roses and Carnations.
  • Greeneries like Salal, Italian Ruscus, and Variegated Pittosporum can be inserted in between the flowers however, to support the rest of the bouquet, it will help a lot to put them around the bottom of the bouquet.

Feel the stems of your flower choices before arranging them, and you will understand how fragile or strong they are. This will help you place them accordingly as you arrange the bouquet to ensure they wont break.

As you start arranging, hold the flowers loosely to insert other items into them as you see fit. Dont squish the stems too much. Instead, relax your hands and let the flowers move around.

Prepare the flower and foliage stems by stripping all leaves, shoots and buds that will be below the point where you tie the stems together, says Louise. The area below the tying point will form the handle of the bouquet and stripping it will make it more comfortable to carry.

Remember that you will be working one-handed as you will be holding your bouquet constantly in the other hand! So be sure to keep your writing hand free.

Choose The Elements Of Your Bouquet

First, you need to decide on the color palette youll be using. Traditionally most wedding bouquets are consisted of white and cream flowers but feel free to choose whatever color you like. You can find inspiration in lots of things: the overall floral design or the aesthetic of your wedding, any emotions you wish your bouquet to convey, whether it is an evening or a morning wedding, the location, even your wedding dress. You can choose sentimental, contrasting, or matching colors, soft or vibrant tones, light or dark shades. Whatever you choose though, prefer to stick to shades of either a single color or a small range of colors.

Once youve made your decision, you can move on with choosing your flowers. Youll need two types of flowers: your strong primary flowers and some secondary flowers.

For the primary flowers, some excellent ideas could be roses, orchids, calla lilies, hydrangeas, peonies, dahlias, magnolias, and many many more. Choose 1-3 of your choice, but make sure to pick flowers with strong and long enough stems, cause theyll be the ones to support the overall bouquet. Also, remember to keep seasonality in mind too. If you wish for out-of-the-season flowers or ones that grow sporadically during the year they might be quite hard to find, and more expensive as well.

How Long Does It Take To Make Wedding Centerpieces

Some wedding centerpieces are quite simple and dont need much time at all. But as a general rule of thumb, the bigger the table, the bigger the vase. And the bigger the vase, the more flowers youll have to work with, which in turn takes more time.

For large, complex centerpieces, it may take you 60 to 90 minutes per arrangement. And for smaller, easier centerpieces, give yourself at least 30 minutes per arrangement.

Flowers And Tools To Get Started

1. Long before your wedding date, get in touch with local flower farmers or florists to order the flowers you’ll need. Buy 20 percent more than you expect to use.

2.You will need reliable, comfortable and sharp tools to make your cuts as easy as possible. The Fiskars PowerGear2 pruner effortlessly cuts through woody stems while the MicroTip snips are great for quick cuts on smaller stems. You will also want a pair of sturdy, all-purpose shears on hand to use on medium sized stems and ribbon. Other supplies you’ll want to gather are floral tape, florist’s wire, corsage pins, and lots of pretty ribbon.

3. To make things simple, but with dramatic effect, plan to use just three or four different kinds of blooms, and to pick a few things from the garden. Kelly Acock, owner of The Monarch Flower Company in Kansas City, suggests using fluffy hydrangea flowers as the base for your bouquets.

Bride’s Bouquet

Set aside a morning two days before the wedding to make all the arrangements: it will take about four hours to make the bride’s bouquet, three bouquets for bridesmaids, and four boutonnieres.

1. The night before you plan to make the bouquets, use your pruners and snips to cut an inch off the bottom of all the flowers and freshen the water in their buckets. Everything should be well hydrated before you start.

Use Micro-Tip Floral Snips for dianthus and more delicate flowers. The comfortable handles and super-sharp blades will let you snip off leaves along the stems easily.
