Everything To Know About Dressing For A Wedding

Congratulations on being involved in a wedding! If youre here, its likely for one of the following reasons:

  • Youre a groom-to-be and youre looking for help deciding what to wear to your wedding
  • Youre a guy in the wedding party or a father of the bride or groom and havent been given any direction as to what to wear
  • Youre going to be a guest at a wedding and want to look good
  • Were glad you stopped by, and were looking forward to helping you out.

What’s The Wedding Day Dress Code

Per general etiquette, the mother of the bride buys her wedding dayoutfit first, then notifies the mother of the groom about the color, length and overall formality of her choice. But if the groom’s mom doesn’t get word by the four-month mark, she should touch base with the bride-to-be about what to do.

How Do You Pick A Tuxedo For A Wedding

For a semiformal wedding, youll usually want to wear a dark tuxedo with a bow tie, cummerbund, or vest. If youre going with a dark suit, wear it with a white or off-white shirt during the spring, fall, and winter months. A khaki or white suit is acceptable during the summer months.

For a formal wedding, you can never go wrong with a black tuxedo, white shirt, bow tie or necktie, pocket square, and a vest. Depending on how traditional the wedding is, you might also consider tailcoats and a cummerbund.

I love wearing a tuxedo there is just a feeling about putting one on. Most grooms just go for the standard tux no matter what kind of wedding they are having. But this doesnt have to be single or double-breasted. 2 or 3 piece3 piece comes with a vest or waistcoat. Then we get into the tails or the Morning Coat . The Morning Coat is a very British look and I really like it, plus it gives you an excuse to wear an ascot.

Its up to you what you decide on, but these are the options for a Black Tie or Formal wedding. If you are having a black-tie wedding, I suggest including some text on the invitation stating this, so your guests know there will be a dress code. Sothere are so many choices for a black-tie wedding. You have the standard tuxedo, but you can get a 1, 2, or 3 button jacket.

    Which Shoes To Choose

The basic features of your shoes should be black, leather and lace-up. When it comes to the soles, if possible, go for leather rather than rubber. You may think there isnt a difference, but believe us, its a little thing that will make your shoe look more sophisticated.

A black shoe is considered preferable when wanting to create a formal look. Regardless of whether youre wearing a suit, tuxedo or morning dress, if your formal wear is dark in colour you should wear black shoes. For navy blue suits, a medium-to-dark brown should be worn.

Other colour varieties are also available if youre working this casual look, from burgundies to deep greens. Just because is you want to break some traditional rules!

The type of shoe can be either Oxford or Derby. Make sure you give your shoes a good polish for the wedding.

General Tips For Men In Weddings

Regardless of who you are or what your role in the wedding is, you will want to abide by some common sense guidelines, which we believe are:

    • Consider potential weight fluctuations: Alterations tailors can generally make your clothes fit so long as you only gain or lose ten pounds or so. Past that, it is very difficult to alter garments and you may have to buy something new.
    • Have your clothes ready with plenty of time. There is little in this world thats more stressful than it being a week before a wedding and your clothes arent ready. Combatant Gentlemen has been going through some extremely bad PR after putting many a groom and wedding party through such stress.
    • The best thing to do is to have your clothes ready no later than four weeks before the wedding date. If youre buying off the rack, give yourself a few days to research online and then do some shopping. If youre buying a made-to-measure or custom suit, youll want to reach out to tailors, share your date, and make sure they can commit to accommodating you without issue. A safe estimate for a made-to-order suit is about eight weeks.

What Should Fathers Of The Bride And Groom Wear For A Wedding

We dress a lot of fathers for weddings so we have a good idea of the trends. Our brides and grooms often ask us what the fathers should wear for the wedding. Fortunately, we have plenty of wedding attire guidance for you.

    Father Wedding Attire Trends

We find that the majority of fathers choose a suit or tuxedo different from the groom and groomsmen. This helps them stand out and feel special.

The Father of the Bride usually has the honor of walking the bride down the aisle and/or giving a toast at the reception, and therefore has a special role in the day. That is reason for him to stand out uniquely!

We do have a smaller number of fathers who will wear the exact same suit or tuxedo that the groom and groomsmen are wearing to keep with a color palette or for continuity in photos. Sometimes, however, a father IS the Best Man, and what a wonderful honor!

Regardless of whether the fathers are matching the wedding party with regard to the suit or tuxedo styles, most choose a long tie or bow tie that matches the color of the dress worn by the person accompanying them to the wedding, often the mother/step mother of the bride or groom. If a father is attending the wedding with no accompanying guest, he often chooses accessories to keep his look classic and timeless. Possibly a black satin bow tie or a thin satin long tie as examples.
