Hey Hey Party People Lets Talk About Toasts And Speeches
Speeches and toasts are one of the most fun, profound, and heartfelt portions of any party, and of course, Im speaking specifically about weddings. At the same time, speeches and toasts can be one of the most cringe-worthy, painfully awkward, and time-sucking portions. Dont lie – you know exactly what Im talking about. Now dont hear what Im not saying: a speech or toast is not a way to win an award or any sort of accolade. However, it is a rare opportunity for someone to share what their relationship to someone means, what they love about the newly married couple, why theyre excited to celebrate their marriage, and give a blessing to the couples next chapter in life. The next time a speech like this might be made is during a eulogy, which is a completely different event.
Now, before I go too much further into this topic, I want to share with you that I actually would classify toasts and speeches as two different things. A wedding speech is a story, a personal reflection, or even an anecdote. A wedding toast is the actual blessing where guests are asked to raise their glasses in celebration of the honored couple.
Wedding Speech Examples To Make Your Own

So, what does it look like when all these elements come together? Wedding vow and speechwriter Katelyn Peterson, owner and creator of Wedding Words, offered us three examples of successful toasts to inspire your own.
“Hi, Im Maya, the brides older sister. With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up.
We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. Im still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.
Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, ‘Bye Bye Bye.’ Even I can admit thats a good one.
But despite Lucy being the younger sister, she has always been more patient, more accommodating, and more thoughtful than me.
And thats because when it comes to the people she loves, shes all in.
Shes the one to prioritize their desires.
Shes the one to compromise first.
And shes the one to support their dreams as if they were her own.
This is why it makes me so happy to know that Lucy has found a home in David. He matches her in compassion, thoughtfulness, and warmth. And I know hell spend his life prioritizing her desires, being ready to compromise, and supporting her dreams as his own.
She laughed at his jokes which I never thought anyone would get.

Dont Be Too Mean Crass Or Dirty
Making people laugh is good. Making people uncomfortable is not. Offensive, off-colour, or any mean-spirited joke at the expense of an individual or group is a no-fly zone. If you have to stop and ask yourself, Should I say this? its a good indication that you should just not. And if you normally swear like a sailor, watch your language and avoid profanity.
Toasting Is Appropriate At Many Wedding
Although the best man is in the spotlight during the wedding reception as the designated toast giver, others can give toasts at the reception or during other events, such as the rehearsal dinner, anniversary reception, engagement party, or post-wedding brunch. “Toasts are a delightful element of many types of celebrations, though we most often think of them associated with weddings,” states Bryant.
Concerning toasts, remember that it’s all about honoring the newlyweds. No matter your comfort level, preparing and giving a heartfelt speech is a tribute to your role in the couple’s lives. In addition, a loving toast is a fabulous way to start the reception by centering the attention on the newlyweds and offering best wishes for what’s to come.

Do: Keep It Short And Sweet
Weve all sat through long, longggggg speeches. We recommend keeping speeches under 5 minutes . While it might not seem like a long time, most weddings have 4-5 speeches and listening to 30+ minutes of speeches brings the party to a halt. No one wants to see guests eyes glaze over as you enter minute 10 of your toast. Keep it quick, and then get to dancing!
Announce Your Intentions With Both Words And Behavior
At a boisterous party or gathering, it can be hard to know the right time and way to make your toast. How do you get everyones attention? At the start of a dinner party, its a little easier: as host, you should be waiting to get your food until everyone else has already done so. So when you approach the table, theoretically everyone else is already seated or in the process of doing so, and you can simply stay standing and say something like, Id like to propose a toast.
If people are milling about, or youre giving a toast in the midst of a meal, youll need to get the rooms attention. Dont do so by clanging your glass with a utensil, which isnt very tasteful, and might break the glass to boot. Instead, signal your intention by standing up and raising your glass to shoulder level, with your arm pointed towards the center of the party. If people still dont notice your gesture and quiet down, just loudly say something to the effect of If I can have everyones attention. A loud throat clearing or Ahem is a bit informal and just never comes across quite right it almost reads as sheepish and shy.

Good Marriage Wedding Quotes
Funny wedding toast quotes are a great way to start the speech or to end it. Wedding speeches need to be amusing. Also, they need to be motivational and bold. To make an impression include both romantic and funny quotes about marriage.
A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. Mignon McLaughlin
Thank Hosts Guests And Wedding Party Congratulate The Couple

Its also courteous to take this time to thank the hosts and other members of the wedding party for all the hard work that went into the event, and to thank guests for being there to support the newlyweds, especially those who had to travel far.
Its also a good time to officially congratulate the newlyweds and offer them your personal well-wishes for their future. It is imperative that you dont forget this part, because they are the whole reason youre there and giving a speech!

Prepare And Practice Ahead Of Time
“You definitely want to think ahead of time about what you are going to say in your toast,” says Bryant. “But I don’t recommend writing it down, nor should you try to memorize it word for word. You are far better off practicing a few times to get comfortable with the overall sentiment. That way when you are delivering the toast, it will come off as more natural and heartfelt.” Making a list of bullet points and naturally speaking to each of those is your best bet. When in doubt, record your speech so that you can review and tweak it before giving it live.
Tell Your And Her Story
Half of the room may not know the bride or groom the way that you do. Telling them that shes so sweet, smart and kind is a statement. Telling them that you knew you were friends for life when she took detailed notes from a lecture you couldnt attend because you were ill, tells the wedding guests the type of person she is. Share an impactful moment with guests.
