Study shows couples still create store registries, but opting more for charitable, cash gifts
Kohl’s appears to be unusual in discontinuing its registry service. According to a 2017 survey conducted by The Knot wedding planning website, nearly nine in 10 couples in the U.S. create a registry with an average total value of $4,853 and an average of 125 items. In addition, traditional gift registries remain the most popular with 84 percent of couples choosing to register at their favorite stores with both go-to retailers such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target and Amazon, as well as niche e-commerce sites. The survey also found that one in five couples don’t register for traditional items, instead selecting electronics such as smart home devices, robotic cleaners and wireless speakers. However, more couples are registering for gifts of money for honeymoons or for charity. The Knot learned that charity registries more than tripled in popularity between 2016 and 2017. Two years ago, one in 10 couples incorporated a charity component. There was a 50 percent increase in cash registries. The most popular things to register for are honeymoon costs , a home down payment , wedding expenses and pricey appliances .
