What Is A Wedding Officiant

A wedding officiant is the leader of the wedding ceremony. They work with the couple to prepare materials for the ceremony and perform the marriage on the day-of.

According to expert Natasha Anakotta, an officiant can expect to spend “anywhere from six months to a full year before the ceremony” preparing and officiating each wedding. “This allows enough time for ordering credentials and official documents, completing minister registration, working with the couple on the ceremony creation, practicing, and working out the logistics and details,” Anakotta says.

Make An Appointment Or Nominate A Day

Depending on the city or county, you may be able to make an appointment for your ceremony in advance. If you’re able to do so, know that in some cases there may be a significant wait to secure an appointment. If you’re not able to make an appointment with the city hall, you’ll need to nominate a day to arrive and wait for your turn for your ceremony. If you’re hoping for a weekend wedding date, it may be a challenge to find a courthouse offering the appointment you desire. “Most courthouses will provide services Monday through Friday, but it is best to check with your local courthouse,” Jeatran advises.

Your marriage license is only valid for a period of time, so think backward from your civil ceremony date to when you got your license to be sure you’re within the time frame.

A wedding may seem straightforward, but even the simplest ceremony is a landmine of choices. Meghann Viens, a communications professional in Massachusetts, said its important to ask the couple how they want the details of the ceremony to go.

Some want to say their vows loudly and repeat them after me, some want to recite them to each other more quietly, said Viens.

Dusty Hoesly, a scholar of religion at UC Santa Barbara and an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church, emphasized that officiants should communicate with the couples extensively before the wedding about what language and symbolism they want in the ceremony. As an officiant, he shares multiple drafts of the vows and ceremony with the couple.

That way, you make sure you dont say anything that upsets the couple, said Hoesly. So many couples have told me they had clergy promise they wouldnt say certain things and then go on and say those exact things.

Michael Stanley models his ceremony on the Book of Common Prayers wedding rite and simply replaces God as it appears throughout the ritual with love. There are also an abundance of secular and religious online templates and scripts for officiants seeking guidance.

I wouldnt use just any old book, but rather something that represents something the couple wants to trust or put stock in, said Stanley. I wouldnt use the Encyclopedia Brittanica, for example unless they were crossword aficionados.

Solemnizing The Rites Of Marriage

Notary Publics who can officiate weddings are actually solemnizing the rites of marriage. Besides writing and reading vows for the couple, the Notary Public will ask both the bride and groom if they take each other as husband and wife and each party will answer with, I do. The Notary Public may then ask each individual to place a ring on the others finger and repeat an oath. Finally, the closing of the ceremony may call for the Notary Public to pronounce the couple as married.

There is no signing, affirming, or witnessing of signatures during this portion of the ceremony.

How To Get Ordained Online

A number of interfaith religious organizations provide online ordination, such as American Marriage Ministries and the Universal Life Church. The end result is generally the same, and both are free, so pick whichever one you like and apply for ordination through its website.

Depending on where the wedding takes place, that may be all you need to do. In almost all states, there are no legal hurdles to getting ordained online and performing a legally binding wedding ceremony, Mr. King said. The majority of states dont even require ministers to register with their local government office. Once ordained, ministers are empowered to conduct the ceremony and sign the marriage license. You can check out A.M.M.s Legal Requirements tool to see what your state or county requires. New York City is one of the stricter locations and requires you to appear in person at the city clerks office to register Virginia is the most troublesome state, denying most ministers who get ordained online, but A.M.M. has information on combating this here.

In addition, there have been certain instances of county clerks issuing marriage certificates that were later found invalid during divorce proceedings. If youre unsure about the laws in your state, speak to a lawyer or better yet advise the couple get married at City Hall the day before, after which they can enjoy the ceremony of their dreams with the officiant of their choice.

Whats The Best Way To Set Up A Consultation Or An Appointment With A Wedding Officiant During The Covid

Can a friend or family member legally officiate a wedding ...

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

How To Plan Your Ceremony

After you’ve clarified the legal requirements to make your marriage official, the rest of your ceremony is up to you. Sit down with your officiant and work with them to decide how you want your ceremony to go. This is where you might want to pick out a wedding reading, tell your officiant stories of your relationship and guide them on themes or styles. Heck, you can even write their part for them if you’d like. It’s your wedding after all.

A typical ceremony order of events often includes a processional, welcome, declaration of intent, readings, vows, ring exchange, pronouncement and recessional.

Regardless of whether or not a Notary Public can officiate your wedding, youll still rely on Notary officials to notarize your life documents, witness signatures, and even certify copies of a wedding license .

Legal name changes or related documents may also call for a Notary Public to preside over. Its sometimes advantageous for a Notary Public to be ordained, as theyll be able to offer this full suite of services as a seamless experience for the couple.

If a Notary Public is ordained or receives a one-day officiant designation, they can also perform the ceremony and solemnize the wedding rites. Otherwise, there will be two individuals: a member of the clergy performing the ceremony, and a Notary Public offering these specific tasks for documents. Either way, both couples and Notary Publics will need to get their documentation and paperwork lined up and ready to go prior to the ceremony.

Obtaining A Marriage License

A couple who intends to be married in New York State, regardless of the residence of either of the parties, may apply in person for a marriage license at the Town of Hempstead Town Clerk’s Office. The application for a license must be signed by both parties to be married in the presence of a clerk. A representative cannot apply for the license on behalf of the marriage couple. This applies even if the representative has been given a Power of Attorney. Notarized marriage license affidavits signed by persons to be married cannot be substituted for their personal appearance.

  • Immigration Record
  • A Criminal Record Doesn’t Automatically Bar Anyone From Holding Office Just From Performing Marriages

There’s a good chance that Robb Green, the Marrying Mayor of Jefferson, has performed and presided over more weddings and marriages in York County than anyone else.

Green’s current tally of marriages is at 3,446. First-term York Mayor Michael Helfrich is just getting started in the marrying business. He has performed three weddings.

And, here’s where the law gets weird.

Green could officiate at all those weddings, many long after he retired as mayor, because he was never defeated for re-election. If an incumbent Pennsylvania mayor loses a re-election bid, he or she also loses the otherwise lifelong authority to officiate at Pennsylvania weddings.

So, to follow along, Helfrich’s predecessor, York Mayor Kim Bracey, could preside over weddings when she ran the city. But, she lost that ability when she lost her re-election bid to Helfrich, who was then city council president.

Meanwhile, Bracey’s predecessor, Mayor John Brenner, still has the legal authority to officiate at weddings because he chose not to run for re-election and, therefore was not defeated, and he also has no criminal record.

Pennsylvania statute specifies who can and cannot officiate at weddings. And, of course, it gets complicated.

Helfrich can administer the wedding vows to anyone with a legal marriage license while he is in office.
