A wedding can be an incredibly special event and incredibly expensive. The average cost in the U.S. is $31,213, according to TheKnot.coms latest Real Weddings Study, and that doesnt even include the honeymoon.
Just because other couples are spending that much on weddings doesnt mean you have to shell out big bucks to get married. In fact, you can cover the cost of a dress, invitations, flowers, photographs, ceremony and reception for a fraction of the average amount couples spend on weddings. Just ask Sandy Smith and LaTisha Styles, who both stuck to a budget of about $5,000 for their weddings.
Whats especially impressive is that Smith has been able to keep costs so low for a ceremony and reception in New York City, where the average amount spent on a wedding is more than $76,000, according to TheKnot.com. She says that she and her fiancé, Cory, didnt want to spend a lot on their upcoming May 5 wedding, which theyre paying for out of their own pockets, because theyd rather use their money for the next phase of their lives: renovating their home and having children.
Styles, who got married on March 14 in Marietta, Ga., benefited from the fact that her wedding wasnt in a high-priced market. Take a look at the restaurant’s linens and inquire as to whether there are choices in colors, fabric types or patterns. Many restaurants are able to switch tablecloths and napkins for a small upcharge. Ask if you can use their dinner plates as chargers, or base plates, to give your table extra polish. Wrap fresh herbs around napkins, or use button mushrooms as unique escort cards. Ask the manager to print a menu card with your names on it.
Centerpieces: Arrange small bowls of olives, hunks of parmesan cheese, dried fruits and nuts, glasses filled with breadsticks, bowls of grapes and nestle in votive candles. Buy a few narrow glass cylinders , and place one or two blossoms in each. Arrange them here and there down the length of the table.

What Expenses Make Up Your Wedding Budget
Invitations: Free. We invited our close friends and family via Facebook and word of mouth.
Wedding Venue: Free. We had our ceremony at our church and our reception was spent at Dave & Busters.
Food For Reception: $100. We had punch and snacks right after the ceremony, and everyone paid for their own food at the reception.
Cake: $60. My sister-in-law baked a carrot cake wedding cake and only charged us for the supplies and ingredients.
My Wedding Dress & Accessories/Beauty: $48. I found my wedding dress at a thrift store for $13. My slip was $8. I wore a gifted blue necklace . My shoes were the best deal at only $9! I also spent $10 for my makeup. About $8 was spent on my DIY bouquet. It was made out of Dollar Tree flowers, ribbon, and a cute brooch. There was no charge for my hair because I did it myself.
My Husbands & Daughters Attire: $103. We found my daughters dress on clearance at Old Navy for around $10. My husbands tux was found for $53, and alterations were $40.
Music: Free. We used the churchs sound system and played music from my phone.
Travel: $30 for gas to and from our place, the church, reception, and hotel.
Hotel, Fun Money, & Food: $174. We got a great deal on our hotel about three minutes from Dave & Busters for $80 . We only stayed for one night because we knew we would miss our daughter. The other $94 we spent on miscellaneous items, like food for the next morning, money for games at Dave & Busters, and other items that came up.
