Consult A Seamstress With No Hesitation
Every bride and dress is unique so everyone needs different things. Usually when you shop for the dress the store assistant lets you know about the needed alterations but some things you figure out when you visit your seamstress. If you arent sure what to get done dont hesitate to ask. Consultations are usually free and with a professional seamstress you can figure out a plan together. If you know that you are going to train or lose weight for the wedding a professional seamstress can take your changing body in to account when doing the alterations.
A trained seamstress is a great help when it comes to perfecting your bridal look, but it also helps if you are well informed about your other style decisions. Taking your bridal look from good to perfect is much more than just having a perfectly fitting dress and we have gathered some tips for you to read!
We are all about healthy exercise routines and it can be a true mood booster when the ups and downs of wedding planning hit hard. But all the fitness isnt the same and if you are shopping for a dress long before the big day it is good to keep few things in mind. Read all of our exercise tips from the blogpost!
If You Don’t Love It Don’t Panicyou Can Salvage It
If the dress arrives and you’re iffy on it, you don’t need to scrap it. Gather your trusted style advisers and “try it on with totally different accessories, like a new belt, or add a bolero,” says Molly Guy, creative director at Stone Fox Bride. “If that doesn’t help, a seamstress can really change the look by shortening it, changing the neckline, taking off sleeves, or adding sleeves.”
Do Bring Your Camera Wedding Dress Shopping
Embrace your inner Cher Horowitz and photograph your dress possibilities instead of putting all your trust in the mirror. “Mirrors are used to sell dressescameras don’t lie,” says Richard O’Malley, owner of the O’Malley Project, a company that offers consulting services for event planners. “Because you’ll be looking at the photos of this dress for years to come, know how it photographs from all angles. One potential hiccup: Some boutiques don’t allow dress photography. Call ahead to see if you can take a few snaps for decision-making purposes only.

Sizes Are Just Numbers
First of all- its important to remember that sizes are just numbers. They help the industry codify bodies, which come in all shapes and sizes and heights and proportions, into roughly 6 standard sizes. The system is imperfect, not least because it appeals to the side of our brain that wants to put things in boxes and say okay so if Im a size X I must look like Y, or worse I can only be happy if Im a size X This brings about what is often referred to as vanity sizing, where high street shops make their sizes fit a slightly bigger body in order to make them feel good and therefore buy the product.
Of course, once one shop does this theres a lot of pressure on their competitors to do the same- why buy size 14 jeans from here when you fitted into the 12s next door. The lower end of the fashion market, the fast fashion we wear most days, is more guilty of this than higher end fashion. This is why Zara is such a horror show for girls who eat carbs. Similarly, within the wedding industry the high street dresses like Monsoon bridal or Phase 8 run truer to their casual fashion equivalents, while the bigger designers often work to vintage patterns, before the gradual growth of vanity sizing.
Sizing Is Just A Number
Bridal sizing isnt like typical street wear sizing. While you might be a size 4-6 in jeans, youre in fact a bridal size 8-10, and if youre a size 14-16, youre likely a 18-20. Dont worry about itsizing is just a number! Youll likely see most of our samples in a bridal size 8, 10, 12, 18, 20 or 22 to try on.

What To Know About Wedding Dress Sizesdont Freak At The Number
Whether youve never shopped for a wedding dress before or youve been to a few bridal salons already, theres one question many of our brides ask us, and thats about how wedding dresses are sized. Brides will often explore our salon with their consultant, see a dress they want to try and look at the tag and feel confusedand for good reason! Find out why, below.
Demanding The Wrong Size
Wedding gown sizes typically run one or two sizes smaller than street clothes, so try not to get hung up on the number. Do not fixate on the actual size but instead on how your measurements compare to the particular line on the specific designers size chart, said Gesinee of Gesinees Bridal in Concord, CA.
Planning on losing weight before the big day? If I had a nickel for every person I have measured who said they were going to lose weight, I would be rich! said Lash. Play it safe and order a size that fits your current body. Any dress can be taken in, typically up to four sizes without affecting the look of the dress, but most can only be let out one full sizeif that. You need to be realistic, in case you dont lose your targeted weight, says DeMarco.
What happens if your dress doesnt fit when it comes in? First, dont freak out and go on a crash diet. Theres always something you can do, said DeMarco. You can order fabric from the designer, add beading, or even put in a new back to accommodate the measurements needed.

Adding Sleeves Or Doing Other Special Alteration
Sometimes we just cant find the perfect wedding dress of the rack. That is when bigger alterations come to question and it is possible to do a lot for a dress. We recommend buying a dress that is as close to your dream as possible and then consult a seamstress for bigger alteration. One of the most common big alteration is adding sleeves but you can also ask for fuller hem, added lace or a big train. You dont have to compromise your style even if you arent getting a made to measure gown.
Here you can see one of the bigger wedding dress alteration we have done. The first picture is the dress we worked with and the second is the altered wedding dress. We added beautiful lace to the bodice part and some extra tulle to the hem. You can read more about this wedding dress alterion from the blog post here Wedding Dress Lace Overlay Before And After.
Minor Alterations You Can Make On Your Wedding Dress
If you have to make some quick alterations, there are some options for you. However, try to bring your dress for professional alterations at least once before your wedding a trained seamstress will do a better job than you or your friends. For example, a seamstress can make a bustle to hold your train.
However, if necessary, you can do some minor alterations at home or even on the fly the day of your wedding.

How To Measure For A Wedding Dress
If you buy your dress at a bridal shop, they have professional stylists that will take your measurements and help you find the dress that best fits your body type.
However, if you plan to buy your dress online or shop sales and trunk shows, youll be on your own. Therefore, knowing your measurements is very important. Get someone to help you and write down your measurements for these basic sizes. Also, if youre going to a local sale or trunk show, bring a fabric measuring tape with you so if you have any concerns or need additional measurements, you can easily get them.
Just remember, you can always get the dress bigger if there is any concern and have it tailored by a local seamstress. Dont stress out too much if you can find a dress that fits you like a glove right off the bat. Wedding dresses are made to be fitted to the bride.
If you accidentlly got a dress that too small, dont worry! Wedding dresses can be let out too!
Trying On Dresses You Cant Afford
You see a stunning gown a mannequin thats way out of your price range, but you want to try it on just for fun. Whats the harm? It can lead to heartbreak and disappointment, said Lash. You need to be able to afford anything you try on.
Make sure you are completely clear on your budget before you hit the salonand make sure that the salon you choose respects your budget. One of the top complaints Lash hears from her brides is that other salons showed them dresses that were out of their respective budgets. We have a strict policy in place to keep the customer within budget, which makes her happier with the entire process, said Lash. Happy bride equals happy life for bridal shop employees!

Do Wedding Dress Sizes Run Small
One thing that throws many brides for a loop is that many wedding dresses run a bit small. This means that if youre technically a 10, you may end up in a 12 or 14 bridal gown.
This is not something to worry or feel insecure about its pretty standard that most dress sizes will be different than what you expect.
This is part of why most wedding dresses have no standard sizes, because they tend to run small, and have different measurements based on the design and designer.
It is important to keep in mind that your dress will likely have a bigger number on it than you expected.

It can be super frustrating to walk into a shop and have to wade through dress after dress to determine your size! Don’t worry, because although dress sizes are different at most stores, as long as you know your measurements, you shouldn’t have a problem figuring out which sizes work best for you.
Figure Out Your Budget
Yes, it’s uncomfortable to talk numbers, but it will save you from heartache later on. Before your first appointment, figure out who is paying for the gown .
If someone else is paying, get the hard numbers on your limit, so you can stay within that budget or pay the difference yourself to get the dress you want.

Say you plan to cap your fashion spending at $2,000you actually shouldn’t buy a $2,000 gown. That’s because you need to factor in tailoring, accessories , and cleaning and preserving the gown after the wedding if you want it as a keepsake.
