Wedding Dress Code: Evening Formal Or Black Tie

AKA, YOUR TRUST FUND BABY BESTIES 300-PERSON WEDDING AT THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

To me , there are few things more attractive than a man done up in full black tie regalia.

That perfectly draped shawl collar, that single-button defining your silhouette, a daring tuxedo stripe that draws the eye down to a perfect break above your dressiest shoes. Oh, and that gorgeous midnight blue hue that brings out your eyes. Sorry, let me just wipe the drool off my chin What were we talking about? Oh right, wedding guest dress codes!

Obviously, if the invite indicates black tie optional, you dont have to wear a tuxedo. But if you have one , why not take advantage of this rare opportunity to get really, really dressed up?

If it wasnt clear above, I stan hard for midnight blue tuxedos as opposed to classic black. Theyre just a bit more modern plus, they photograph really well.

For summer weddings, a velvet slipper makes for a dapper alternative to classic black lace-up dress shoes. Those Del Toros are top-of-the-line, but if you shop around, you can definitely find more affordable options out there.

As far as finishing touches, a bow tie is required with a tuxedoso pick one thats formal without being too stuffylike a nice swiss dot print!

Oh, and do we need to mention that you should learn to tie a bow tie? If you havent already? Because you should, and a black tie wedding is a great excuse

White Tie Wedding Attire

White tie weddings are rare these days. On a wedding invitation, you might see it referred to as a dress suit, tails, or full evening dress. While this used to be a popular dress code for high society events, its now reserved for only the most formal occasions.

When you think white tie, think British royal wedding. To have this dress code, the wedding is very important, and its attendees are typically rich or famous. Dont be intimidated! This is a rare event so you should enjoy getting all dressed up.

As the name suggests, wedding guests should wear a white bow tie. Men must also wear a white waistcoat and evening tailcoat. Nowadays, it is more acceptable to wear a regular tuxedo jacket instead of tails, but do so at your own discretion.

Wear a crisp white collared shirt with your best cufflinks. Black patent leather shoes and black socks are a must. Consider classic white tie accessories like top hats, gloves and canes to be optional.

Jeans, Hats, Non-Collared Shirts

The standard rules of being well-dressed for a wedding still apply, so just like a restaurant or private club, the warning of ripped jeans, baseball hats, and non-collared shirts aren’t appropriate –unless it’s at the request of the couple that you dress down.

White or Off-White

Please don’t wear white or off-white dresses or anything that could perhaps photograph as white. Head- to-toe white suits or jumpsuits are also off-limits, too. Pale pastels like the palest blues, greens, yellows, grays, nudes and blushes all have a tendency to look lighter than they are in photos. A white wrap or sweater to throw on if you get chilly is generally fine, especially if it’s after the ceremony. Prints with some white elements are ok but just be sure the colors are much more predominant than any white background. We wrote a whole post about wearing white to a wedding, but we’re sure you get it — please, just don’t!

Anything Too Revealing or Too Short

And of course, don’t wear anything too short or revealing, and don’t look unkempt or wrinkled. If you have to fight with your outfit to keep parts of your body you’d rather not show, it might not be the right choice.

What To Wear To An Indoor Winter Wedding

Take the above advice, but flip it to the cold-weather months. For an indoor winter wedding, anything that could be interpreted as business casual will serve you well. Essentially any wool suit could work here, and you likely already have one in your closet. You could even pair khaki slacks with a tailored blazer, since, lets be honest, youre probably going to throw off that jacket before you hit the dance floor.

Perhaps most important is having a crisp, collared button-down shirt ready to go, ideally something white or a muted blue depending on the color of your suit. A tie is nice to have, but totally optional. And if wearing a pink polka dot sock will make you giddy, you have our blessing.

Follow The Dress Code

The dress code is the most important factor to take into consideration when choosing what to wear to a wedding. The majority of couples will set a wedding dress code depending on the style of the event, as well as the time of year it’s taking place. What you wear to a black-tie wedding in the winter, for example, will be vastly different than what you wear to a casual wedding in the middle of summer.

“If the dress code is black-tie, then there is only one correct outfit: a black tuxedo,” explains Brian Sacawa, style expert and author of The Groom Guide. “Guests should also have the appropriate tuxedo shirt, a stud set and cufflinks in a matching metal, either a cummerbund or vest waist covering, black bow tie, white pocket square, and black patent leather shoes.” Similarly, women are encouraged to dress up in a floor-length evening gown or an elegant dress.

Fashion rules for a casual daytime wedding, on the other hand, are much different. “You can never go wrong with a navy blazer, a blue button-down shirt or khaki pants for a casual wedding,” says Virginia-based wedding style expert Monte Durham. “And, for ladies, you can always opt for a dress with a nice neckline and simple accessories.”

Casual Attire For A Wedding

How A Man Should Dress For A Summer Wedding

Dressing casual for a wedding is really just a nice way for the bride and groom to give permission to wear your suit or blazer without needing to buy anything new or something you dont already own like a tux with tails. It typically calls for a suit and dress shirt, but you can get by with a blazer or sports coat.

You probably wont feel like youre climbing Everestunless youre actually climbing Everest but its going to be colder in high altitudes than it is at the base of the mountain. Even if the dress code isnt tux-level formal, youll want to stick to dark colors, and a 3-piece suit isnt a bad move for some extra warmth. And add a tie with an appropriately rugged texture to your look.

Cruise Ship Wedding Attire For Men

Depending on the formality of the wedding, a cruise ship wedding is the perfect opportunity to bust out a white dinner jacket. The ivory jacket was actually invented for use in tropical climates, where, weve heard, cruise ships tend to sail. But even if youre on one of those Alaskan cruises, a white dinner jacket will stand out at a black tie optional cruise ship wedding. If the dress code is more relaxed, watch the weather and dress accordingly: Lighter suit colors for warm weather, darker suit colors for cool weather.

What Should You Not Wear To A Wedding

We have talked about what to wear to a summer wedding, but what should men not wear? Unless specified or virtually permitted, stay away from athleisure pieces. While a sweatsuit is technically a suit, its not the right one for a wedding. Denim is also typically a no-no for summer wedding attire. Stay clear of jackets, jeans or anything denim related for your summer wedding looks.

While we are a fan of bold head-to-toe print, your job as a guest is to support the union and not be the focal point. The same is said for white or cream. These designated colors are for the people at the altar and not the people in the crowd. A white or cream dress shirt? Yes. A full white or cream ensemble, unless requested of the guests in the invite, no. Subtle patterns and lighter colors like pastels are a great focus for your summer wedding looks.

History Of Preppy Style

Preppy fashion emerged in the 1900s as a popular style amongst Ivy League Students at esteemed institutions such as Harvard, Yale & Princeton. Labels such as Brooks Brothers and J. Press contributed significantly to the rise of this, especially as they had often had stores present on these campuses.

The term prep was derived from private preparatory schools that students hailing from wealthy families often attended. These were highly regarded, and those who attended one often went onto further their education at one of the fabled Ivy-Leagues. In a contemporary sense, however, preppy dress-sense can lend itself to anyone irrespective of their background, with emphasis being placed on the actual style of dress that is emblematic of its name specifically the quality, cut & style of clothing.

So how does this translate into a look within the formal wear sphere? In a nutshell , this often includes:

Button down oxford / seersucker shirts, a blazer, chinos, a splash of pastel colors thrown in and accessories that can elevate your look. Bolder looks can encompass the notoriously famed go to hell pants, with peacocks, frogs and the like on full display, more colorful accessories and all out disdain for stylistic norms. Hows that for some change?

What About Seasonal Or Day/night Weddings

Eric: The next question I have, weddings are all different times of the year, all different places. Walk me through for seasonal, maybe a spring/summer wedding versus a fall/winter and then you also have indoor versus outdoor. You also have day versus night weddings.

Chris: Yes.

Eric: There’s a lot to consider there, but answer it all.

Chris: Yeah. There’s a lot wrapped up in that question but that’s all right. There’s a pretty simple way to think about this stuff. Two things you need to remember. Think about the colors that you’re wearing and think about the fabric that you’re wearing. Colors first, spring, summer, and daytime all have a similar theme and that’s lighter colors. Depending on your color palette and you can go to Cladwell and we’ll tell you what colors are best for you. Generally, tans, light grays, pastel, or bright colors even, greens, blues, reds, all that stuff is great for spring, summer, daytime. Fall, winter, and nighttime are similar too, so I think dark colors, more heavily saturated, there’s navy, black, dark gray, that sort of thing.

Eric: Yes.

Chris: Those are all great. Secondly, fabrics. If it’s hot out, spring, summer, or winter if you’re in Miami, look for cotton/linen blend blazers.

Eric: Lifesaver.

Chris: Yeah. It really is a lifesaver. We’ve all been there. Don’t ditch the blazer. Wear the blazer, you just got to find the right fabric.

Chris: Exactly.

Eric: Match the fabric to the temperature.

Chris: Yep.

Chris: Yeah.

Chris: Yeah, exactly.

Men’s Wedding Outfits For The Beach

While sand, sea and sunshine might provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic ceremony, it can also make finding the perfect outfit for a beach wedding rather tricky. In countries with hot climates, you’ll need to wear something that will look sharp while also keeping you cool, and if the wedding is being held on a sandy or pebbled beach, you’ll need to choose appropriate footwear, too.

Men’s wedding outfits for the beach should be cool and comfortable, so if youre lucky enough to be jetting off to a reception in a tropical locale, then light summery fabrics are a must. A linen suit will look smart and celebratory, but the breathable fabric will help you to stay cool opt for a light neutral shade, like beige or khaki, as this will suit the summery vibe.

If the invitation specifies a casual dress code, then you can forego the suit and just wear a shirt and trousers, instead. Pick a casual shirt in a linen or cotton material: ideally, you want to be able to roll up the sleeves for a completely relaxed beachy look.

Some beach weddings allow guests to go barefoot or wear flips flops during the ceremony, but if youre not sure then it’s best to bring a pair of suitable shoes with you. Sandals or will look perfectly stylish when paired with a linen suit, while also being practical enough to wear on a sandy beach.
