Dont: Choose A Bodysuit Before Youve Chosen Your Dress Style
A bodysuit provides full body shaping and sculpting. Whatever your dress-size, a bodysuit gives you a sleeker silhouette and a little extra security. It also can provide some extra support in the bust, eliminating the need for a special bra.
Although this is a staple undergarment, it isnt one to wear to your bridal appointment. These shaping garments come in a variety of styles and can be worn under gowns with plunging backs or deep sweetheart necklines. Choose one only after you know your gown style.
Have Fun At Your Wedding Dress Appointment
Wedding dress shopping should be fun! Enjoy the experience of finding your dream dress, and dont make it a long, arduous process. Cherish the memories you make during this time. Once you find your dream dress, its only going to continue to get better once it is the proper size, color, and altered to fit your perfectly.
What To Expect From Your First Wedding Dress Appointment
Youve got that ring on your finger and a date in mind, so now comes the fun part of shopping for your wedding dress. Its a super exciting time and the temptation is to go to every single bridal shop and try on every wedding dress every made. Before you get booking your consultations, take a look at what to expect from your first wedding dress appointment.
1. Do your research
Take to the internet to work out what style of dresses you like and whether there are any designers you are particularly fond of. This will give you a good feel for the boutiques you may want to visit. Draw up your short list and make your appointment. Saturdays draw the crowds so booking in advance is always advisable.
2. Get visiting
Initial appointments tend to be about an hour long, during which you can expect to try on a selection of different gowns. Keep an open mind and try different styles, even if you think you might not like them youll be surprised at what suits you and what doesnt. Boutique stylists will listen to your desires but are also well versed in finding dresses that compliment your body shape, wedding theme and, most importantly, your personality.
3. Sample sizesThe wedding dresses in bridal boutiques are all sample sizes, because we cant carry every dress in every size . This means that the dress you try on might not fit you perfectly, but dont worry, well do our best to show you how the same dress would look in your size.

How Long Is A Wedding Dress Appointment
Finding yourself wondering, how long are wedding dress appointments? Much like appointment fees, the length of time of an appointment also depends on which bridal shop you are visiting. At KAREN WILLIS HOLMES boutiques our appointments last for an hour and a half and the standard across all boutiques seems to average out between an hour to ninety minutes.
This might seem like a long time but, trust us, the time goes quickly especially when you think about the time it will take to get acclimated and pick out the gowns youre going to try onwhether youre browsing racks yourself or even telling you stylist your vision and having them pick them out for you. Once youve got your first few picks ready to put on you also have to think about how long it takes to try on wedding dresses.
Many gowns have buttons or corsets in addition to zippers and your stylist will want to pin or clamp your gown to your body to ensure youre getting a true vision of how your gown will fit once its properly in your size. That can take a few minutes for each dress. Of course, once youre out in front of that big mirror, with your guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing at what youre wearing, youll want to discuss how you feel in each gown. Youll want to think about if it feels good on your body/skin, if you feel like the silhouette is flattering on you, if it feels like your style and if you can truly visualize yourself in that particular gown on your wedding day.

Do: Have Your Bra Measurements Taken
Yes, we know that having someone loop you with a measuring tape in a tiny changing stall isnt everyones favorite experience. However, avoiding it for years means that a lot of us are wearing the wrong bra sizes. Have your measurements taken again before your bridal appointment, especially if youve been losing weight ahead of the wedding.
Your dress cant lay properly unless your undergarments fit like a glove. When your bra is too big or too small, the bust of a gown may fit quite differently than it ought, affecting your perception of the dress. The right bra will help you find the right gown.

Can You Alter A Dress That Is Too Small
While its easier to take in wedding dresses that are too big, a professional seamstress should also be able to alter your dress if its too small and needs to be let out. In general, most wedding dresses have seams that can be let out by an inch or two, which is ideal if you only need your gown to be slightly bigger. To go up several dress sizes, your seamstress can add a lace-up corset back or gussets .
Dont Trust Cell Phone Pictures
After you say yes to you dress, it can be tempting to go overboard taking pictures of yourself in the sample gown for you to look back on later. A professional wedding photographer and camera will be able to capture the details of your gown in a way that a cell phone wont be able to. Bad lighting, weird angles, and red clips will not do your wedding dress any justice. Dont second guess your dress due to an unflattering cell phone picture.

Are Alterations Included In The Cost Of My Garment
Wedding Dress Shopping Tips #7. Christines Bridal & Prom does not include the cost of alterations in any of their formal wear. This is the fairest way to our customers, as shops that offer a one price for alterations services are generally working on averages. In many instances, you will end up paying far more for a flat alteration fee, than if you were to pay only for the alterations you needed. We are happy to refer you to qualified independent seamstresses that are eager to work with you, should you need those services. Any questions pertaining to alterations should be directed to the person you choose to work with. Christines Bridal & Prom does not employ seamstresses on staff, and provides names of seamstresses as a courtesy only to our customers.
The Proper Under Attire
Your bridal dress consultant will be the one in there helping you into the dresses since they can be quick complex with all the layers and fastening features. They are strangers, right? So just prepare your undergarments. Nude boy shorts and a strapless nude bra is the best option. Leggings or tights can also be worn if you are a little on the shy side, though, most often you will want to try the dress on without a bra since most gowns will have built in support.

Expert Wedding Dress Shopping Tips
1. Limit Your Entourage
Lets be honest, weve all watched an episode of Say Yes to the Dress where weve rolled our eyes because of someone that was being overly opinionated. You dont want that! Your experience can quickly turn negative with too many opinions being thrown at you.
It may sound like so much fun to take all five bridesmaids, your mom, your mother-in-law, your grandmothers, your father and the dog, too but the truth is you dont have to! Bring the people whose opinions you value the most & the people who will truly have your best interest in mind when wedding dress shopping!
2. Ask Questions, A lot of Them!
You should not only ask questions to the bridal shop owner and stuff but ask yourself some key questions, too!
- Do I feel beautiful, confident and comfortable?
- Can I dance in it?
- Can I sit down?
- Will I feel comfortable being in it?
Although a gown may be gorgeous, if you cant move in it all night and feel trapped, mummy-style, its not the right one for you.
As you are shopping, if you absolutely love a dress, but you dont like one teeny tiny part of it, ask if it can be changed before dismissing it. Most designers or seamstresses can remove beading, flowers, trains and more. They can also add sleeves, illusion necklines, belts, cups to the bust, lower backs and more to make it custom for you!
3. DO NOT Freak Out Over Sizing
4. Schedule Alterations Early
How To Know What Size To Try On
Sample sizes will vary from store to store but typically bridal wear comes up a lot smaller than high street clothing so be prepared to go up one if not two sizes. Itâs really difficult for stores to have every style in every size so all sales assistant will always do their best to make the dress look and feel like itâs fitting you. Some may be too small and some may be too big.
Don’t worry what size it says on the label. As long as you feel amazing that’s all that matters.

Those People Who You Cant Say Yes Without Should Be There To Provide Support Clarity + Excitement
However, we know sometimes its just not possible for some family members to make it in to the shop , which is why we are so grateful to have access to technology that allows those far-away friends and family members to be a part of this experience. FaceTime is your friend. Something else that we love to do when a certain important family member cant make it in that day but can come another time, is to set up a private try on for you + that family member where we get you back in the dress you bought so they can see it, help pick out accessories + still be a part of the experience. This way brides dont have to miss out on sales or first appointment discounts if theyre available but can still make sure their family member feels loved + part of the process.
