What to Wear to a Wedding

Getting dressed up for a wedding is super fun if youre confident in what you want to wear and how you look. This wedding guest dress code guide for women should give you some instant ideas on how to prepare for the big day and be as stylish as ever.

White Tie Dress Code for Women

While not common for modern wedding celebrations, these wedding dress codes are typically royal events with ceremonial displays of grandeur and elegance.

White tie is the most formal of all wedding dress codes. Everyone at this wedding should expect to be seen in a formal gown. Long formal dresses with heels and chic jewelry work best for these ultra-sophisticated weddings.

Black Tie Dress Code for Women

While almost as fancy as a white tie dress code, black tie weddings typically mean sophisticated evening wear. Women may wear a long gown or even a stylish, chic cocktail dress. Sleek heels and accessories work perfectly for these events.

Black Tie Optional Dress Code for Women

Also known as formal, black tie optional attire mean that formal gowns, cocktail dresses, and even a dressed-up pantsuit can work for these occasions. Chic cocktail dresses are most commonly worn to black tie optional weddings, but dressy separates and fun footwear also make an appearance at these slightly less formal events.

Nautical Wedding Attire For Men

There are a few guidelines here, including a strict policy against using phrases like Land, ho! and Ahoy, matey! and Shiver me timbersokay, so maybe thats more pirate than nautical, but we understand each other. Instead, let your clothes do the talking. Work some stripes into your outfit, and make sure to build your look from the colors navy, blue, and white. But if you were thinking about wearing boat shoes with a suit? Well, youd be better off tossing those in the stokehold .

What to Wear:

The Necktie Or Bow Tie

  • A wedding is not the time for novelty prints or loud patterns and colours. A black necktie along with a black suit, is always, always a winner. No one can mess that up.
  • Another safe option is a grey or silver-coloured necktie.
  • At casual weddings, you can get away with a wool necktie, but other than that, the safe bet is on silk, polyester or microfibre.
  • Want to add colour? Check the invitation or ask the groom what the wedding colours are. Some weddings have a selected colour palette and matching it will make the bride and the photographer very happy.
  • Remember that neckties wrinkle easily. Be careful and hang or roll it before the wedding and if travelling for the ceremony.
  • The more casual a wedding is, the more creative your bow tie is allowed to be.
  • The edges of the bow tie should match up between the edge of your eyes and the edge of your face.
  • If you choose a self-tying bow tie, practice before the day! The same goes for a necktie knot that youre unfamiliar with.
  • Bow ties have been used for more than 430 years. Theres a free conversation starter.

Colors You Can’t Wear To A Wedding

Can You Wear Black to a Wedding, Wedding Guests Wearing Black. Wedding ...

Brides often state they want their guests to be comfortable. However, the rule is that you’re allowed comfort as long as it doesn’t make others uncomfortable. Knowing what colors not to wear to a wedding is just as important as knowing what is appropriate to wear to a wedding. Clothing in sheer fabrics and lighter colors can often create a fashion faux pas at a wedding. Err on the side of formality and subtlety when in doubt.

  • White
  • Overly sparkly or heavily metallic
  • Bridesmaid dress color
  • Mother of the bride or groom dress color

Avoid colors that resemble or coordinate with the wedding colors unless you are told otherwise. Also, remember to avoid white unless you are specifically asked to don that color by the bride and groom. More traditional couples may also have an aversion to black, so check with someone close to the couple before choosing an all-black ensemble for an afternoon wedding.

What Not To Wear To A Wedding

Though some weddings have a specific dress code, many don’t, and there are outfits that you should not wear. As you ponder on what to wear, always remember that the impression you make is important. Below are some outfits that you should not wear to a wedding.

  • Top with an extra-low neckline, especially if you have no bra. This may be particularly improper if it shows too much of your bust.
  • A white dress that can be confused with the brides gown.
  • Micro-mini skirt.
  • Transparent dresses or skirts, especially if it shows your underwear.
  • Office or business wear, although an elegant pantsuit with heels works if you don’t like dresses.
  • T-shirts.
  • Jeans.
  • Backless dresses that show your bra band. If you want to wear a backless dress, make sure it has a built-in bra.
  • A dress or skirt that shows your bike shorts underneath.
  • Flip-flops, unless its a casual, flip-flop wedding.
  • Plastic footwear.
  • Sportswear like a jogging suit.
  • Sneakers or tennis shoes.

If you avoid these types of clothing, you will have a clearer picture of what you can wear to the occasion. Avoid clothing that screams, Look at me! This can be seen as desperate and disrespectful to the bride.

Whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident will be perfect.

How To Choose The Right Winter Wedding Outfit For Cold Weather

The biggest challenge when deciding what to wear to a winter wedding as a guest is the weather. Thankfully, we’ve got some tips on picking out an outfit that’s appropriate for chilly temperatures. “Guests of winter weddings should consider fabric types, outerwear, and footwear carefully to protect from the elements,” says Sullivan. She recommends choosing an outfit with thicker fabric made from natural fibers, such as wool. Consider avoiding outfit ideas that have short sleeves or are sleeveless, like a slip dress, unless youre planning to layer a jacket or sweater on top.

Whether you’re searching for a formal tuxedo or semi-formal suit for your winter wedding attire, Sudhakar also suggests turning to wool. “Heavier textiles such as wool flannel in a solid color are just as elegant as basic wool, but with that added texture and warmth for the colder months,” she adds. Wondering what to wear to a casual winter wedding? For casual or daytime winter wedding guest attire, a nice suit is still a must. That said, feel free to play around with accessories depending on the dress code, such as adding a fun holiday-themed tie or pocket square.

What to Wear to a Wedding As A Guest – DO’s & DON’Ts for Proper Attire + Outfit Suggestions For Men

Stylistically, weddings arent the straightforward, traditionally formal affairs they once were when everyone wore their Sunday best, got a bit boozy and that was that. These days nuptials can be casual, overtly formal or even themed ranging from the unusual: dress Hawaii, to the ultra-specific: wear pink stripes.

Arguably even more confusing is figuring out what to wear to a wedding reception. If youre only attending half the day, can you make half the effort? Of course not.

The only saving grace here is that because youre avoiding all the pomp and ceremony, you can afford to have fun with your attire, as befits an upbeat, positive occasion. But, unless youre also the entertainment, fun is not wacky. There needs a degree of sobriety in your outfit, even if its lacking from your behaviour by the end of the evening.

Black Tie/formal Dress Code

Black tie dress code is the biggie that most people struggle with. If your gorgeous bride and groom have gone to the trouble to create an amazing formal affair, then do your bit and dress the part.Girls in the strictest sense, this means LONG evening dresses. This is where most people go wrong. If the bride is wearing an amazing, ornate dress, and her maids are decked out in floor-length gowns, your pretty sun dress isnt going to cut it for black tie. A shorter, more glamorous dress is also fine as we are usually a little more relaxed here in New Zealand. That doesnt mean you have to spend a heap of cash on a fancy dress, just find something simple, timeless and elegant that you can wear again for the next black tie wedding.Guys Technically, a black tie dress code means just that Black suit, white dress shirt and a BLACK bow tie, but I think most bridal couples would be happy with a normal tie. Just make sure you shoes are shined, and your shirt is ironed and youll look sharp. If youre still stuck at the end of it all, take your cues from the bridal party. Ask the bride what they have put the bridal party in and try and stick as closely to that as you can.

What Shoes To Wear To A Winter Wedding

Shoes are an important part of your winter wedding guest style. And believe it or not, there are some special considerations to take into account for the winter season. “Winter weddings are a great excuse to break out your favorite classic footwearclosed-toe, rounded, and pointed pumps are very popular given their elegance and warmth,” says Sullivan. “Alternatively, in warmer seasons, we tend to see more strappy open-toe looks to keep cool.”

Similarly, there are some seasonal differences in menswear when it comes to choosing the right shoes. “It’s true that lighter tan or light brown shoes in leather or suede tend to lend themselves more toward summer weddings,” says Sudhakar. “Fall and winter, however, call for boots, and while a classic black or dark brown cap-toe shoe is a safe bet, don’t be afraid to rock a dress boot with your suit,” she continues. Your boots should also be polished, clean, and free of embellishments so that they won’t draw away from the rest of what you’re wearing, Sullivan says.

If dress boots aren’t your thing, Sudhakar suggests wearing “a simple plain toe, a clean dress Venetian, or a stylish monk strap.” Or, if you’re wondering what shoes to wear to a black tie winter wedding, Sudhakar recommends a pair of classic black patent or evening shoes.

Ignoring The Invitation Dress Code

A common wedding dress guest mistake is failing to check the invitation dress code to see which style of outfit is appropriate. For black-tie dress code, an evening gown or cocktail dress is expected, for a white tie dress code nothing but a ball gown will suffice, and for a lounge suit dress code a daytime summer dress, a skirt and top or a light suit is required. If there is no dress code on the invitation, a colorful summer dress is usually a safe bet. Dress codes should be paid attention to. Believe me, you dont want to feel out of place. Nothing could feel more awkward. A wedding is a classy occasion. Dont cheapen it by wearing what you wore to the bachelorette party or the club the night before. Even though the reception will likely feature dancing and single cuties, its not the time or the place for tiny clothes that hug every curve. Skimpy clothes fall into the bachelorette party dress code. Believe me, no one needs to see your upper thigh or your cleavage hanging out. Seriously, guys. Its just not a good look.

So there you have it! My top 5 wedding No-Nos when it comes to wedding attire for guests! I know there are a few exceptions to this rule. For instance, different cultures have different traditions when it comes to white and red.
