To start, make sure you have Inkscape downloaded on your computer. Its my favorite, free vector design program that is both powerful and easy to pick up even with little design experience! If youre a pro at powerpoint or other Office products, your learning curve will be pretty low.

Step One: Open Google Maps in a browser and zoom in or out so all of your points of interest are on the screen. Start with your basics where your ceremony is, the reception venue, the hotel and then if it makes sense, add some fun, personal things like the best place to grab a drink in between your ceremony and reception or where your first date was or arrows to where your honeymoon is. Dont go overboard and keep in mind this has to be printed on a small area so use digression, but a few personal adds are fun.

How To Design A Custom Illustrated Map
Hire a good designer whos familiar with maps! Okay, we may be a little biased, but mapping out a bunch of locations can take a good deal of time and expertise, as well as an understanding of how paper ratios and sizing works. Theres a balance to getting everything on the map in the right place thats both aesthetically pleasing and as functional as possible.
If you want to do it yourself, or just are trying to help out your designer, heres how we like to do it:
Pick out your places and map them all on Google Maps on the same screen. You can type in your first two locations and then use the + key to add another location until youve got them all on the same screen.
Pick your map limits the farthest locations from each other will be the map limits, and this determines scale as well. If you have 7 locations within a 1-mile radius and then one thats 24 miles away, itll be hard to draw this to scale. You may want to consider dropping the outlier location or illustrating it at a less accurate scale so that the other 7 locations dont have to be too itty bitty.
Print out that screen, and trace over the major roads. Put a dot/star/etc. on each location that will be illustrated. This is your framework.
Use a different piece of paper to paint in your backgrounds . We like to keep backgrounds light, but its up to you and the vision you have for your wedding map.

A map is a great piece of extra info to include in your wedding invites for any friends and family coming in from out of town. If youre already planning on DIYing your invites, youll be happy to know it doesnt take an expert map maker to DIY a map insert as well! While this map wouldnt be impressive to a pro with professional grade software, I think it looks pretty good and will be useful to your guests.
You dont need a very sophisticated program for this either! My Photoshop skills are limited to none, so I used Microsoft PowerPoint instead. While it is time consuming, the steps are rather easy. It took about three hours to perfect this project, but if you arent as picky as I am, it shouldnt take that long.
