How Much Of A Dress Can Be Customized

Cost of Bridal Alterations on Your Wedding Dress

Bridal seamstresses should be able to do quite a lot some examples are adding sleeves or straps, deepening a neckline, lowering the back, even making you an overskirt or lace topper for an alternative look, said Lara. Sometimes the amount of customization will depend on the way that the dress is constructed. It could compromise the structure or integrity of the dress to do certain customizations. Its a good idea to reach out to the seamstress before your first fitting and talk with them about what customizations youd like to do, just to make sure that its possible, and that they feel confident in doing that type of customization.

We also recommend asking the bridal shop before you buy if you have an idea of what customizations you may want to make just to be safe.

Month Before Your Wedding: Second Fitting

Traditionally, your second alterations fitting will take place about a month or two after the first appointment. If your dress didn’t need much altering in the first place, you might be able to get away with this being your final fitting. Otherwise, it’s a chance for you to see how the dress fits after the first round of alterations, and for the seamstress to make any additional adjustments.

When Should I Start My Alterations

Alteration timelines vary from bride to bride. If you are loosing weight or gaining muscle mass through wedding planning, you will start alterations closer to your wedding date than a bride who keeps a stable weight and body mass. Standard alterations start at about 8 weeks before your wedding however, seamstresses can work with less than 8 weeks. At The Bridal Finery we check in and remind our clients to book their alterations appointment. When it gets closer to the wedding, there is so much going on. Its best to book the first alterations appointment so you can block the time off of your schedule.

  • Read their reviews on Fash and Google.

Will Every Wedding Dress Need Alterations

The answer is yes! Every dress will need alterations. When I was ordering my wedding dress my hips were falling into a size 8 and my bust was falling into a size 4 in the size chart. I didnt want to squeeze my hips in to a size 4 and risk my dress not fitting or being uncomfortable to sit down. The safest option was ordering a size 8 and tailoring in the top. Plus, Im only 55 so a hem and a bustle were necessary.

How Many Wedding Dress Fittings Should You Schedule

Usually, tailors and wedding salons encourage you to schedule at least three fittings. This helps to ensure that your wedding dress alterations are as accurate as possible on your wedding day.

The first one should take place two to three months before the wedding, and it will usually last about an hour. The dressmaker will carefully measure you and begin making the major necessary adjustments and to begin wedding dress alterations alterations.

Its a good idea to schedule the second fitting for your wedding dress to occur about a month before your wedding day. The fittings will usually last no more than 30 minutes from now on.

At this point, your tailor will have made the most significant changes to your gown and will focus on any small remaining details and imperfections. Dont be afraid to speak up at this time, and make sure you address even the tiniest of concerns you may have.

The final fitting should happen roughly two weeks before the big day. Usually , you will find your dress fits like a glove at this point and looks flawless on you. Typically, this is when you can finally take it home with you. Yay!

Adding Or Removing Straps

Most bridesmaid dresses have longer straps, but you can have them easily altered or shortened to fit your body. You can even have them completely removed if youre going for a sexier look. However, removing straps can be difficult because it depends if the structure of the dress allows it or not. For example, if the dress is backless, the straps might be needed for the dress to stay up. You can also have straps added if you find the right fabric and size for you! Altering bridesmaid dress straps typically costs $15 to $80.

How Many Fittings Will I Need

How many fittings you’ll need may all depend on the number of alterations required and how much your body changes during that time. “The gown will start to take shape when the fitter starts pinning and tucking the fabric and sculpting it to the bride’s body,” says Nicole Sacco, former director of fittings and sales at Kleinfeld, in regard to the first fitting. “At the second fitting, the bride should have a better idea of how the gown will fit.”

Often the alteration process can be complete in just two fittings, but Zimmerman says she tells her brides to prepare for three. “Its important to remember that your wedding dress was ordered according to the largest measurement , therefore, it is likely it will not fit properly at your first fitting appointment.” Either way, schedule your final fitting to take place one to two weeks before the wedding since your body likely won’t change much in those final weeks.

If you got your dress in a specialty or bridal boutique, they might have a seamstress on-site who will take care of all the alterations. They also will give you a specific timeline of alterations, so you dont have to worry about that. However, if you bought your dress online, youre going to need to find a seamstress in your area. What Is A Wedding Dress Fitting

A wedding dress fitting is an appointment with a seamstress or fitter to have the dress altered to fit correctly and sculpt the gown to the body. Brides may need around three fittings before the dress is ready to be worn.

Every dress should be altered, even if it’s only a little, to ensure proper fit. “You can splurge on a pricey dress, but if it’s not altered properly it won’t look any better than a gown that’s a tenth of the cost,” says Terry Hall, former fashion director of New York City’s Kleinfeld Bridal Manhattan. Case in point: dress alterations are important, so make sure to leave room in your budget for them. Depending on what needs to be done, you may expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $1,000 on alterations.

The entire process may be done in two to three fittings, the first of which lasts up to an hour. Your bridal boutique will either have an in-house seamstress who regularly works with the shop’s gowns or they will be able to recommend a trusted tailor to do the job.

As you break out the measuring tape, here is everything to know when it comes to bridal alterations, according to three experts.

  • Terry Hall is the head of retail and business development at Amsale New York and former fashion director at Kleinfeld Bridal.

What Happens If I’ve Left My Alterations Until Last Minute

Whether alterations services can be done in a hurry varies completely from seamstress to seamstress. Anna tells us, “we do offer rush fittings for brides who ordered their dress a little later so we can turn around fittings in a couple of weeks, but we need the bride to be extremely flexible with availability for fittings.” Your wedding dress shouldn’t be a source of stress or worry in the run up to the wedding, so remember to allow plenty of time for your wedding dress alterations!
