Can Wedding Stress Affect Your Period

Don’t freak out! This is surprisingly normal.

As if your surmounting wedding-day to-do list isn’t enough to keep you occupiednot to mention overwhelmed and at least a little stressed outnow you’re noticing some odd changes with the one thing you’re hoping to see arrive every month on time: your period. If you’ve started to notice that Aunt Flo is coming or going sooner or later than normal, or perhaps not coming at all, it’s understandable that you’d be concerned. First and foremost: Don’t freak out. Any type of stress can affect your periodand wedding stress is no exception. “Even small, daily stressors can increase the amount of adrenaline and cortisol in your body,” explains Rebecca Levy-Gantt, M.D., OB/GYN at Premier ObGyn Napa Inc. “When these hormones are produced in higher-than-normal amounts, they can disrupt the hormones that create the regular menstrual cycle, causing prolonged bleeding, skipping of periods, or unusually heavy or irregular bleeding around these stressful times.”

The most common way wedding stress can affect your period is by skipping periods. “If your brain isn’t releasing the hormones necessary to regulate your cycle, then your ovaries won’t get the message either!” says Briana Livingston, M.D., OB/GYN at MemorialCare Medical Group in Long Beach, California. Naturally, this can create even more stress that worsen the problem. “When you skip your period for multiple months this is called amenorrhea,” she explains.

What Should A Bride Or Groom Do If They Are Dealing With Anxiety On The Day Of The Wedding

There is no one size fits all answer, but there are a few best practices that can be a good starting point, says Dr. Michaelis. Before your wedding day arrives, take some time to think about your needs and identify coping strategies that work for you. That could be taking 10 minutes to yourself in a quiet space, arranging for a calming cup of tea, or cranking the music for a stress-relieving dance party. One thing he recommends for everyone, whether you have an anxiety diagnosis or not, is cardiovascular exercise: It could be running, cycling, swimming…anything that gets your heart rate going. This will have a hugely positive impact on your outlook.

Worried about your timeline? Mindfully engage with what you have scheduled, and take a cue from social psychology. Acknowledge when you will have to be on during the day, and when you can be off, says Dr. Michaelis. Ask yourself if you can handle being on for three hours, or if youll need a break after two. Schedule in times when you can regroup and rest.

His most important tip? Dont forget to eat! Anxiety and stressful situations are so much worse when youre hungry,” he says. “Make sure to fuel your body with foods that are both comforting and nourishing, that will give you strength and energy for the day.

Is It Safe To Try And Stop Your Period

Whether its for a week, a month or even long-term, its possible to stop your period.

Some people want to stop or delay their period because of special events like a wedding or honeymoon. For others, the desire to stop their period stems from a medical reason like:

While its safe to stop your period, remember that your body is normally on a cycle, which ranges from 21 to 35 days. And it all has to do with hormones.

Estrogen is the hormone that makes tissue build up in your uterus, which provides a nice cushiony lining for a pregnancy to implant, says Dr. Jhaveri. If you dont get pregnant, that tissue needs to shed, and thats your period. After you ovulate, another hormone, progesterone, is released and helps to keep you pregnant. But if you dont get pregnant that cycle, the progesterone goes away and thats when the period comes.

That decrease in progesterone causes your uterus sheds its lining, which results in a period.

If you can prolong the progesterone, thats the most effective way to stop your period, says Dr. Jhaveri. Youre faking your body into thinking youre pregnant.
