How To Fill Out An Georgia Marriage License
It is your responsibility as the wedding officiant to sign the marriage license on the wedding day. We have broken this duty down into four simple steps:
STEP 1 ASK THE COUPLE TO PRESENT THEIR MARRIAGE LICENSE
At some point on the wedding day, you need to ask the couple to present their marriage license. Generally this happens immediately following the ceremony while everyone heads out to the reception. Though this doesnt have to be the case, as the marriage license can be completed at any time on the wedding day before or after the ceremony.
STEP 2 CONFIRM THAT THE MARRIAGE LICENSE IS VALID
Before you start filling out the marriage license you need to confirm that it is currently valid. A marriage licenses validity is determined by three laws that specify the marriage license waiting period, expiration, and return. If you need further clarification on what these terms mean, there is a good explanation here. The information below outlines the waiting period, expiration, and return for Georgia marriage licenses:
- REQUIRED WITNESSES: None
- EXPIRATION: No Expiration
- RETURN: Within 30 Days after the Wedding
In practice, verifying the validity of the marriage license is usually a formality. Most couples file for their marriage license a week or two before the ceremony date, in which case the marriage license, according to state law, is valid.
STEP 3 COMPLETE AND SIGN THE MARRIAGE LICENSE
Who Should You Ask To Officiate
Your officiant should be someone you care about , and whom you trust to make your ceremony special. This person should be reliable and organized. They’ll need to go through the ordination process and be prepared on your wedding day. You’ll also want to ask someone who feels comfortable speaking in front of crowds, since, along with you and your future spouse, they will be the center of attention during your ceremony.

Advice For Performing A Georgia Wedding
Are you performing a wedding in Georgia? These are some things that you will want to consider when making your plans. First of all Georgia is a humid subtropical locale with long, hot summers and mild winters. This means if your couple is holding a summer wedding, you may want to opt for a breezy or flowing garment to officiate in so you stay comfortable. If the wedding is taking place in one of the many barn wedding venues in Georgia, or other outdoor wedding hotspots in the state, you will want to make sure your attire matches the formality of the wedding. The barn setting may be much less formal than an upscale former plantation house, for example. Fees that officiants in Georgia charge are dependent on a number of factors. How much professional experience the person has, whether theyâll be required to travel to the ceremony destination, and how much pre-wedding preparation is involved will all help determine a fair price.

Meet Reverend Kees Devente:
Over the past fifteen years in which I have served as a wedding minister, I have performed hundreds of wedding ceremonies in many different scenic mountain settings ranging from wedding venues to state parks, private resorts or homes. The ceremonies have ranged from the traditional Christian to the more secular depending on the wishes of the couples. I have been an ordained Presbyterian minister since 2002. For 10 years I served as Spiritual Coordinator/Chaplain for a boarding school in Dahlonega, Georgia.
Rev. Kees DeVente
Currently, I am a full-time high school educator, teaching and mentoring in Gilmer County. I have also served for many years as an Adjunct Professor at Reinhardt University in the Religion Department.
I am married and my wife and I have a eight-year old son. We live in Ellijay, GA. I really enjoy living among the friendly people and in the beautiful scenery of the North Georgia Mountains.
I am committed to making sure that your wedding script is to your liking, and that it suits the joy and the dignity of the occasion, whether there are just a few or many guests in attendance. I truly appreciate each and every couple that chooses to call on me to be their wedding minister.
