Can You Make Payments On Wedding Dresses

Can I Use My Own Seamstress

Online Wedding Dress Review | 5 jjshouse wedding dresses under $300

Yes, of course you can, but be careful with that option. Not only will the wedding dress boutiques own seamstresses have a better idea of how to work with their own designs, should anything go wrong with the gown once it has left the shop, the lines between who has the responsibility of fixing any problems that may arise and who does not can become very blurred.

Oh, and the boutiques own seamstresses will have experience with their style and shaping of gowns, as well as the fabrics and embellishments.

How Far In Advance Should I Purchase All Of The Items For My Wedding

For a stress-free timeline, plan on ordering your dress 9 to 12 months prior to your wedding date. Dresses are made to order, and can take up to 5 to 7 months to produce, plus 2 to 3 months for tailoring.

There are rush options for weddings under 6 months, but rush fees do apply and vary based on designer and timeline. Your personal stylist can better guide you through pricing per designer during your appointment.

Here is our recommended timeline:

  • Bridal Gown 9-12 months in advance of your wedding
  • Bridesmaids 5 months in advance of the wedding
  • Accessories 2-3 months in advance of you wedding
  • Veil 2-3 months in advance of the wedding

Better yet, purchase them all the day of your bridal appointment so you can see the completed look all together.

Selling A Wedding Dress Locally

Selling your wedding dress to a bride near you seems like a good idea. Namely, because you dont have to deal with shipping. Unfortunately, there are other challenges involved in selling a wedding dress locally.

If you dont want to take the online route to sell your wedding dress, consider a local resale store. You might think it would be easier to just drop your gown at a consignment shop and collect payment. Unfortunately, thats not how it works. It could take much longer to sell your wedding dress than youd like. Most importantly, youll probably get less money for a used wedding dress when selling locally. Due to lower competition in a local market, there wont be any urgency for a bride to spend more.

The unfortunate reality is that you probably wont find stores that will buy your dress for cash to resell it. Its uncommon to find shops that will buy wedding dresses upfront at all. Its more common for shops to hold gowns in their stores and take a commission on the sale price. The other possible option would be that a shop would give you the small commission on the wedding dress resale, keeping the lions share of the purchase price for themselves.

Use The Fabric To Make Anything

As I mentioned above, I used my wedding dress fabric to make a baptism outfit for Simon and James. However, baptism outfits arent the only thing you can make with wedding dress fabric.

Consider anything and everything from pillows, hankies, and garters to photo album covers, Christmas ornaments, baby quilts, doll clothes, stuffed animals, Christmas tree skirts, or decorative pillows in your own home.

Seriously, just search Pinterest for ways to repurpose a wedding dress and you will be amazed at how creative some people are!

Think Outside The Bridal Shop

Self-described micro dresses aren’t the only option, either. While visiting a traditional bridal salon to try on dresses is a rite of passage for many brides, online sources for wedding gowns abound. The range is considerable, from Anthropologie’s BHLDN to bridal boutique Azazie, and even sites like ModCloth, Etsy or Amazon.

How Much Of A Dress Can Be Customized

Bridal seamstresses should be able to do quite a lot some examples are adding sleeves or straps, deepening a neckline, lowering the back, even making you an overskirt or lace topper for an alternative look, said Lara. Sometimes the amount of customization will depend on the way that the dress is constructed. It could compromise the structure or integrity of the dress to do certain customizations. Its a good idea to reach out to the seamstress before your first fitting and talk with them about what customizations youd like to do, just to make sure that its possible, and that they feel confident in doing that type of customization.

We also recommend asking the bridal shop before you buy if you have an idea of what customizations you may want to make just to be safe.

Wear A Family Heirloom

Wearing a dress that belonged to your mom or grandmother carries true sentimental value. It will also save you on the cost of a gown. But choosing to wear a vintage dress isn’t necessarily free. Depending on the age and condition of the dress, restoring and altering it can cost a few hundred dollars or more. If you’re interested in this option, look for a wedding dress restoration specialist who can help you evaluate the dress’s condition and what might be needed to wear it safely on your special day.

A Little More About My Dress:

SIMPLE WEDDING DRESSES FOR ELEGANT BRIDES

My dress was very plain it didnt have any lace, beads, or other decorative trim, so it was very easy to cut up and get long panels of silky fabric.

Even still, some of you might be wondering why I would cut up such a precious keepsake .

Yes, I understand my decision might sound hasty or ridiculous but keep in mind, I am NOT a sentimental person especially when it comes to stuff. I dont like extra stuff sitting around my house, so there was no way I would ever want to store my dress for the next 50 years. It was either donate it, or cut it up and repurpose it into something useful I chose the second option.

Also, my dress was $90 from the clearance rack

As I mentioned above, I am very happy with my decision to cut up the fabric from my dress however, since I know many of you would not be willing to do this, I thought Id share a few more ideas of ways to repurpose or reuse your wedding dress .

Final Payments Are Probably Due Early

“Most, if not all, of your wedding vendors are likely to require payment in full ahead of the wedding,” says Lehman. But even if they aren’t, she suggests getting it all done ahead of time anyway. “No one wants to be fumbling with a check book on a wedding day when they could be sipping Champagne and celebrating love!”

Adding Sleeves Or Doing Other Special Alteration

Sometimes we just cant find the perfect wedding dress of the rack. That is when bigger alterations come to question and it is possible to do a lot for a dress. We recommend buying a dress that is as close to your dream as possible and then consult a seamstress for bigger alteration. One of the most common big alteration is adding sleeves but you can also ask for fuller hem, added lace or a big train. You dont have to compromise your style even if you arent getting a made to measure gown.

Here you can see one of the bigger wedding dress alteration we have done. The first picture is the dress we worked with and the second is the altered wedding dress. We added beautiful lace to the bodice part and some extra tulle to the hem. You can read more about this wedding dress alterion from the blog post here Wedding Dress Lace Overlay Before And After.

Negotiating The Perfect Price

Lisa Guy is a 27-year-old sexologist and psychologist in training. Her wedding is on February 5, 2022, overlooking the ocean in Tutukaka, New Zealand.

How much did you spend: $1,559.40

How did you set your budget for your wedding dress? We set a wedding budget and decided on our top wedding priorities. My dress went into this category along with having a restorative yoga class the morning of the wedding and having an amazing wedding celebrant. Our parents contributed money, but we have had full say over how we wanted to allocate the money.

What was most important in choosing your wedding dress? I wanted a high-quality fabric so I was mindful of the feel of the silk and lace. You can tell so much about the quality of the dress by the feel of the fabric. My wedding dress has beautiful lace, comes in at the waist, and flows at the bottom. It’s stunning and suits my hourglass figure and our picnic-style wedding.

How did you stick to your budget? I browsed shops before booking an appointment. I had a shop in mind. I selected bridal shop as everything in the store was within my price range, so I could try on any dress without worrying about the price tag.

I also tried to be thrifty. For example, I purchased the veil second hand at a closing down sale and negotiated the price from $100 to $50.

Use This Simple Math Equation

If you have a big budget goal that seems daunting, divide it into smaller chunks that are easier to digest. The simple math trick that makes it all work? Take the sum of your desired budget and divide it by the number of months you have to save up. Getting married in a year with a budget of $20,000? Divide $20,000 by 12 . If that amount seems like too much per month, add more time or try cutting back on a few of your big-ticket monthly expenses to help you save. “That’s literally how simple planning for a wedding can be,” says David Bach, founder and chairman of FinishRich Media and author of Smart Couples Finish Rich, about this relatively simple math.

What Style Of Dress Should I Go For

A reputable boutique will be able to take one look at you and advise you on the dress shapes that will suit your body. Think about your figure, height and complexion, as well as the theme of your day and your venue. Also think about which bits of your body youd like to show off, and those that youd rather cover up or disguise. The more information you give the assistant, the better chance you have of finding the one.
