Can I Print My Own Wedding Invitations

Pros And Cons Of Diy Wedding Invitations

Print your own Wedding invitations for under $50

DIY weddings have become increasingly popular over the years, especially in the wake of 2020, when many couples were forced to rethink the size, location, and even date of their weddings. Backyard bashes are all the rage, and with that informality comes a willingness to forego formal floral arrangements and glitzy centerpieces in favor of homemade bouquets and candleholders designed by the bride and groom themselves. But even the most ambitiously crafty couples have to draw the line somewhere.

You may feel comfortable hiring your Aunt May to make your cake, but how do DIY invitations compare to top-of-the-line customs?

Best Paper Weight For Wedding Invitations

You might not think that cardstock weight for wedding invitations matters all that much, but it has a surprising impact on the perception of your invitation. Its also an important consideration for DIY invitations, as this will change whether you can print your invitation at home or whether you need a printer.

When we talk about wedding invitation weight, were actually talking about wedding invitation thickness, i.e. the thickness of the paper.

The most important weight consideration for DIY invitations is the paper weight capabilities of your home printer. Most people use lightweight printer paper at home and so dont know the maximum weight capacity of their printer.

Most at-home consumer printers can handle a paper weight up to 80 lbs, or possibly 100 lbs, but not all can, so its important to double-check your printer. If the paper is too thick, your printer wont be able to run the paper .

As to which paper is heavier, that depends on the scale used to determine weight and density. The simplest approach is to use the European Metric Scale of GSM to determine weightthe higher the number, the thicker the paper . Learn more about which cardstock weight is best for you here.

Head To The Post Office

Once you have an invitation completely put together , stick it in an envelope, and go to the post office to have your postmaster weigh it. Remember that the shape of the envelope will also impact the cost. Hoping for hand canceling to avoid any potential ripping or damage? Mention that to your postal worker while youre calculating postage in case there are extra accommodations that need to be made .

To make the cutting templates, I just created a box the size of the layer I needed cut. So for instance, the backing layer was 5×7. I created a new file and placed as many 5×7 boxes that could fit on a standard sheet of paper. That number ended up being two for the 5×7 size. For the smaller pieces like the RSVP, I was able to fit up to four per page.

    Picking Your Printer and Ink

The very first question you need to ask yourself is what kind of printer do you have, and what type of ink does it use? Most inkjet printers use dye-based ink made up of small, colorant particles dissolved in liquid, , which is absorbed into the paper. Dye-based ink is well known for its wide color gamut, deep blacks, and brilliant saturation. These inks will produce vivid images when printed on semi-gloss or gloss-coated paper. The only downside? Dye-based ink doesnt have the longevity of other options, such as pigment-based ink.

Pigment-based ink contains very fine colorant powder suspended in a solution rather than dissolved, so the color is left on the papers surface instead of being absorbed. The visual difference can be subtle, but the results are great: prints that last much longer . A downside to using pigment-based ink is that its more expensive, as there are printers that typically come with several color pots to accurately re-create a range of colors.

Everything You Need to Know About Paper

Rethink Templates With Designs That Go To The Edge Of The Page To Save Time

If youve ever tried to print out a photo on your home printer, then you know that no home office printer is going to accommodate full bleed designs, also known as designs that go to the edge of the page. In order to achieve the look of these types of invitations, youll need to do quite a bit of trimming and cutting to get the designs to look right. If youre a skilled crafter, then this wont be a problem of skill, but it might be an issue of time. The only way to ensure that the invitations are cut consistently and cleanly is to cut each one individually, and that can take a whole lot of your precious time.

While full bleed design templates like the one below are absolutely lovely, its important to consider the extra effort they involve.

Is It Cheaper To Print At Home Or At The Store

Even accounting for the cost of paper, which may add an extra cent to the cost of each page, and for replacement cartridges, the at- home cost generally is less than half that of in- store printing. This conclusion also holds for extra-large print jobs, when the cost at office supply shops drops to 6 to 7 cents per page.

Double Check The Font Fine Print

How I made my wedding invitations | Farmhouse Invitation DIY

Fonts can be tricky beasts. If you buy a template that is a Microsoft Word Document, but you dont have the necessary fonts downloaded on your computer, chances are you are going to end up with a template that looks different than what was advertised. Most vendors will detail directions around fonts in the description, so make sure you have a good understanding of the necessary fonts before you buy. Sometimes vendors will state that the fonts are freely available, so be sure to clarify whether that means youll be receiving the fonts as part of the purchase, or if you have to find the fonts, download them, and install them yourself.

This is often the advantage of buying a template that is in PDF format and can be edited with Adobe Acrobat. While many people arent as familiar with Adobe Acrobat and its editing capabilities, or you might not even have it on your computer, it does allow fonts to be embedded in the document. This usually means that you can edit without having to worry about whether or not you have the right fonts installed. Always be sure to double check with the Etsy retailer.
