Listen To Your Bridal Stylist
Its true, your bride tribe knows you best. But no one knows the gowns at the shop like your bridal stylist. The person pulling gowns and jumping into the dressing room is paid to make this experience perfect for you. Theyve taken into account everything you love, and quite frankly is likely a more objective opinion than your family or friends. They are thinking of what you like, not what they like.
But ultimately, block out all the noise and listen to your gut. If you know deep down you dont love something, its not your gown, no matter how pretty your bride tribe says you look. And if you, in your heart, know you prefer something different, listen! Youre the one whos going to be wearing the gown, you make the ultimate choice.
Feel Free To Experiment With Styles That Aren’t You
Even if you have your heart set on a sexy mermaid-style gown, or think you can’t wear anything “bohemian,” try on a variety. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and you may surprise yourself by choosing something totally different than the pins on your inspiration board. And try the dress that your mother keeps saying is “the one”she’s been looking forward to this day too. She’ll either see that you were right about the skirt swallowing you whole, or you may shock yourself by actually liking the dress.
Look at choices for length, sleeve style, necklines, waistlines, trains, etc. There are a ton of options out there! Do a little research on what’s possible for specific fabrics and silhouettes, but don’t rule out gowns of a particular type because they don’t have all the little details you prefer. If you see what looks like the dress of your dreams, but it has sleeves, and you wanted a sleeveless, or if your dream gown ends up having a huge train and you wanted a shorter one, you can ask a seamstress to alter these things.
Who To Take Wedding Dress Shopping
Once your appointment is booked, youll need to tell your bride tribe where to be and when. That is if you plan on taking anyone! So, who should you take wedding dress shopping? Well, there are a few things to think about when youre making this decision that you should answer personally:
Do you want anyone to see your gown before your wedding day, or, do you want it to be a complete surprise for everyone?
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed in a large crowd? Picture yourself in a gown that you love in one of your boutiques who do you think would be honest with you but also know when something is truly your style?
You want to pick people that have helpful advice and who will be truthful with you, but also people that know you best and understand that they are helping you choose a dress, not that they are picking something for themselves or their taste. Its completely fine to bring people that have different styles to you but you just want to be sure they can put their own vision of what a bride should be aside and understand your personal vision. The most important thing is that you love the gown youre in, that you can truly see yourself on your wedding day in it, and that you feel indescribably beautiful.
Take your most trusted and those who you think will make your bridal experience relaxed, stress-free and utterly unforgettable. After allthis is probably one of the happiest moments where your vision of your wedding truly comes together.
To 8 Weeks Before The Wedding
First-fitting time. Make minor tweaks , and consider bringing a bridesmaid or two along to demonstrate how to bustle the gown. Hold off on buying your bridal undergarments until after this point to gauge the best foundation for your specific situation. Also, keep your weight stable from here on out, but don’t panic if yours fluctuates. You still have 1-2 more fittings to either take in or let out the gown for the perfect fit.
Trying On Too Many Dresses
If youre a fan of Say Yes to the Dress, youve undoubtedly seen a bride whos tried on 100+ dresses without finding the right one. Most brides try on between four and seven gowns, said DeMarco, and shouldnt try on more than 10, because it can lead to confusion.
Often, a bride is trying on dress after dress because shes just not ready to end the shopping experience and make a real commitment. The most common mistake that a bride makes is not purchasing her gown when she finds it, said Lash. The danger that befalls her is she becomes overwhelmed and forgets what she originally set out to find. She begins to doubt herself and starts to lose faith in the experience.
Not every bride has that moment when the tears start rolling and you know youve absolutely found The One. Real bride blogger Crista kept searching until the tears started rolling. While trying on a Priscilla of Boston gown , Crista noted, “As I gazed upon my reflection, I noticed my family standing around me, teary-eyed. Although I was touched by their reaction, I wondered, Why arent I crying? said Crista. I decided not to purchase that dress and left the salon contemplating my shopping experience.

Things No One Tells You About Gown Shopping
I finally found Her: The perfect dress for my wedding on September 1! I’d like to give a special shout-out to my consultant Andrea from Bridal Reflections in Carle Place, Long Island, for her unwavering patience, arms of steel, and contagious smile. 25+ dresses later, here’s what I learned.
1. Undergarments can drastically change the look of a dress. You already know that wearing a strapless bra or a regular one with clear straps is non-negotiable. Even so, Id recommend getting your measurements taken before you start this process, especially if you’ve lost weight recently, like I did. When I tried on the winning dress for the very first time, my bust looked…off. The culprit: Undergarments one cup size too small and three inches too big around the waist. Armed with my correct size, I slipped on the dress againit’s amazing what a difference a few inches can make.
2. Wear just enough makeup to feel prettydon’t go overboard.Being surrounded by a billowing sea of white fabric makes you hyper-aware of your appearance. Under-eye circles that were barely noticeable before look stark. Pale pink lipstick is drowned out by fluorescent lighting. You don’t have to get dolled up for your consultant apply just enough so that you feel presentable. But whatever you do, DON’T apply self-tanner in the days leading up to your appointment, in order to avoid damaging any of the dresses. Also wear your hair the way you’ve planned it for the wedding.

Don’t Do It If Surprise Is Important To You
“I strongly advise against doing this, as this may ruin the element of surprise,” says wedding expert Kaeleigh Testwuide, owner of The Diamond Reserve. Even if he doesn’t know exactly which wedding dress you’ve selected, he’ll have a good idea about the styles you gravitate towards. Simply put, if he wants to be https://www.marthastewart.com/7931482/wedding-reception-surprise-ideas, then it’s best he doesn’t join you for any shopping trips.
Be Honest About Your Budget
Discuss your wedding dress budget at the start of your appointment and stick to itdont try on dresses that are out of your price range. You dont want to fall in love with a dress you cant afford, and your stylist doesnt want that to happen either. A great stylist will be able to pull dresses that make you feel fabulous without breaking the bank. If you do find a wedding dress thats over your budget, ask the salon if theyre having any upcoming sales or trunk shows that could lower the price.

Do Account For Extra Cost
This is something I think most brides dont consider before they plan a budget. When youre buying a dress the cost of the dress is just one aspect of your total looks price tag. Most dresses will at least need some type of alterations, even just having the hem let out cost money. A bride also has to consider accessories for her dress, such as undergarments, the veil, shoes, and jewelry. Those little items can add up.
What To Bring To A Wedding Dress Appointment
The day has arrived! When preparing for wedding dress shopping on the day youre going bridal shopping you might be thinking about what to take to a wedding dress appointment. Your bridal shop definitely will have tissues so dont worry. Want to make it feel like a true celebration? The boutique probably already will have champagne or drinks for you and your guests.
What will be a good idea will be some water bottles if you plan on walking long distances from shop to shop, and the right gearloose clothes in summer, an umbrella, snow boots in winterfor those walks as well. Dont worry too much about bringing things to prepare for when youre in the boutiques, chances are the salon has already thought of everything and has your back! It’s also time to find your veil so you can get an idea of your entire look, from head to toe, when you have your gown fitting. For a casual dress, go with a complementary short blusher or cage veil. If you’re wearing a ball gown, you might want to choose something more dramatic and grand, like a chapel- or cathedral-length veil.
Have A List Of Questions Ready For Your Stylist
Bring along a list of questions only your bridal stylist can answer, including how long it takes to make the gown you love, whether or not they alter dresses in-house or suggest expert tailors, whether they ship the gown to you or if you pick up in shop, the best way to travel with your gown and if steaming the dress day-of is the best strategy.

The Curvy Girls Guide To Wedding Dress Shopping
You know what you want in a wedding dress but will you be able to find it in your size? This is a challenge faced by many a bride if you arent sample size and you have curves. Also ICYDK, bridal gown sizing is a very special thing in that its smaller than your average clothing size . With this in mind, gown shopping is not easy, especially if you are a specialty size.
Wedding dress shopping can pose quite the challenge for plus-size brides, says Diana Di Poce, founder & editor-in-chief of DARE Magazine. Over the years, I have spoken with many curvy brides who have had unfortunate experiences while shopping for their gowns. Many bridal boutiques do not cater to women over a size 12, or do not have plus size samples available to try on. These brides-to-be are often let down with a lack of options, and leave boutiques feeling traumatized, when they expected a fairytale experience.

Sawyer says she was lucky to find a bridal boutique stocking size 26 samples which she easily fit into and could be clamped and fitted into styles to see how they would actually fit her. I felt like a model! she says. Based on her own experience, Sawyer recommends finding out what your dress size is before starting to shop and scoping out brands that are available. She also found it helpful to call ahead and ask if they have plus size samples in the styles she liked before making the appointment.
