What Should We Put On Your Wedding Registry

Real Bride Wedding Registry Experience

WHAT TO PUT ON YOUR WEDDING REGISTRY!

How Did You Organize Your Registry Process?

The first thing I did was create a list of items we really wanted to round out our kitchen, dining, and living areas and then I followed it up with items such as a honeymoon fund, experiences, and a cash fund. I was very careful to have enough items on the registry but I also did not want to overload it with hundreds of items so I tried to make sure I had at least 10 items in each category for our guests to select from.

How Did You Decide With Your Partner What Should Include the registry list?

My partner and I did sit down together and go through several retail online shops to figure out what items and styles we both wanted to have in our new house together but after a while my partner let me take the lead.

Do you think its appropriate to ask for non-traditional gifts?

I do think guests are looking to give something non-traditional and one that could be meaningful to the couple. Non-traditional gifts are becoming more the norm than not so I feel most wedding guests are getting more comfortable giving them.

Wedding registries are filled with goodies to help you set up your new home and life together as a married couple and to celebrate your wedding. Many couples find the process of setting up their registry to be a fun one so it is no surprise that there is an abundance of online wedding registry companies you can work with now.

What Not To Put On Your Wedding Registry

Your wedding registry should be a shared list for you and your partner, so its probably not the best place for gifts that are super specific to just one of you. Instead, opt for things you can share with your significant other as you begin your new life together.

We also recommend avoiding too many expensive items for your registry. Be mindful of your guests and instead include a range of price points for them to choose from.

Lastly, dont put things on your wedding registry just for the sake of it. Select items that you will truly get good use out of and wont just stuff in a closet or drawer somewhere. Your guests want to get you something youll actually love, so make your selections intentional.

Check out our top 10 dos and donts of creating your wedding registry. Now that you know whats best to leave out, here are some great options to include on your list.

How Many Gifts To Register For

Finding the magic number comes down to a simple math equation: Multiply your guest list by two, and then add a few extras. Guests prefer to have plenty of options when it comes to shopping your registry. Having at least two gifts per guest will give them the ability to find a product they feel great about purchasing. When creating your wedding registry, it’s best to include gifts that range in prices from $50 to $200 or more. Doing so will allow your loved ones to find a present that fits within their budget or they can gather together for a group gifting option. It’s also recommended to continually add gifts to your registry leading up to your big day. Since products of all price ranges will be purchased before your wedding, keeping your wish list updated will help your loved ones find gifts that fit their budget and are still in stock.

If that number feels high, don’t stress. In 2020, the average value of a wedding registry was $4,134. While this number varies based on the size of your wedding, it serves as a general guideline to keep your registry choices on the right track. For reference, the average guest spend on a wedding gift is $120. Again, this number is a median, meaning it’s important to register for gifts at a variety of price points. In fact, our study indicates that the average value of a registry is down $1,000 since 2013. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, though the most likely is the rise in cash gifts.

Where To Create A Wedding Registry In Canada

Its fast and convenient to register and to shop online, so the retailer you choose should definitely have that option. But if your wish list includes merchandise, ideally there should be actual brick-and-mortar locations where you can see the products youre putting on your list. When you visit, you might discover additional items you hadnt thought of and youll be able to tap into the expertise of a wedding registry consultant. Besides, some guests might prefer to shop in person.

If your guest list includes people in cities across the country , a reputable national chain with multiple locations, such as Hudsons Bay Wedding Registry, Bed Bath & Beyond or Linen Chest, is a great choice. There might be a local retailer where you live thats renowned for its wedding gift registry .

Its OK and maybe even preferable to register at up to three different places, especially if you want to include specialty items such as camping gear, gardening tools, gift cards or a honeymoon fund. Just make sure you dont register for the same item in more than one place that just defeats one of the purposes of registering, which is to avoid duplicate gifts.

Things You Plan On Returning

Sometimes, couples really just want cash. But they know you cant ask for money without it being a major etiquette faux-pas unless you do this .

So they think, okay, lets register for a ton of stuff well never use, and we can return it all!

It becomes blatantly obvious to guests.

Dont do it.

Its no big deal if theres an item here or there that you realize later you may not need or want, so youd like to return it to use the gift card amount on something you will use.

But when couples register for tons of obvious items theyll never use, return, and then use the cash on something else entirely, it sort of defeats the purpose of a registry.

Save people the trouble and do this instead if you really plan on never using any of the items.

How Much Should Someone Spend On A Wedding Registry Item

30 Things I Put on My Wedding Registry

Now there isnt really a clear answer with this one as it depends on the relationship that the guest in question has with the soon-to-be-weds. As you can probably imagine, the closer you are to the couple, the more youd probably be willing to spend. However, distant friends and family may choose to buy a less expensive gift on the list. According to wedding website Zola, there are a few price points that wedding guests can follow if theyre not sure how much to spend on your registry gifts, and they are as follows:

  • Close Family and Friends: £100 £150+
  • Family and Friends: £75 £100
  • Co-workers, Acquaintances and Distant Relatives: Under £50 £75

As weve already mentioned, the answer to this question completely depends on the couple in question and their registry, so dont panic if these gift prices arent within your budget. At the end of the day, money isnt everything, its the thought that counts, and theres a wide variety of the best wedding registry gifts available out there for you if you are shopping on a budget!

How Many Registries Should You Have

Most couples have between one and three wedding registries. A versatile supersite like Zola allows couples to register for material goods and cash all in one place and is always a good place to start. From there, a couple might also register at a department store , a big box store , or other national chains .

A couple might also have more niche goals for their early married lifehome renovations, art purchases, major honeymoon adventuresor could be interested in supporting a charitable cause in lieu of gifts. Registry sites exist for all of these options, and couples often find that using a combination of a few is the best way to cover everything.

Let People Know About The Wedding Registry

Let family and close friends know where youve registered, so they can answer people when they ask. Add it to your wedding website, if you have one. Etiquette experts recommend not having a link to your registry and not the store names on the homepage of your website. Most people today will do a Google search of your name to find your wedding registry.

The Same Item On Different Registries

There are few things more frustrating than seeing two of the same items from two different stores. Lets say, for instance, you want this amazing set of cookware. So, you add it to one list and then think, hmm, lets add it to another, too. While the idea may be to ensure you are giving guests the convenience of shopping from either place they prefer, it actually makes things confusing. One guest may really love to give you the cookware as a gift, but theyll worry that someone else will double-buy the same gift from another retailer. It just makes things confusing.

Instead, only add one of each item to ALL registries. It keeps things much easier.

Another tip is to use one universal registry, like this. It will keep everything organized and you can register for anything, from anywhere.

Things You Should Never Include On Your Wedding Registry

Once youre ready to set up your gift registry, here are 7 things you should NOT include on your wish list and other proper wedding registry etiquette suggestions for the following topics:
