This Is How Much You Should Actually Be Spending On Wedding Gifts

Big weddings are back on and that means fancy dinners, dancing the night away, and celebrating with your loved ones.

It also means youll probably be spending quite a bit.

We know that planning a wedding is expensive, but even being a guest can be extremely costly.

In fact, the average cost of being a wedding guest is an eye-watering £541.90 which includes a new outfit, somewhere to stay, drinks and, of course, a gift.

But how much should you be spending on your wedding gift? Does it depend on how well you know the couple? Will you be judged if you dont spend enough?

The experts at Ocean Finance have thankfully run the numbers to help wedding guests decide how much is appropriate to spend on the all-important present. And it does seem to depend on where you sit in the wedding party.

While people might worry about how much to spend on a gift, many couples are just happy youre able to celebrate the day with them and they realise youve probably already spent money doing just that, says Sarah Neate, editor in chief at Ocean Finance.

But we found that people tend to spend more if theyre closer to the couple with over double the spend for a family member or close friend, compared to acquaintances, such as a colleague.

However, you dont need to spend a fortune to show how much you care, and opting for a personalised or handmade gift can be a thoughtful and affordable way of celebrating the newlyweds.

As the resource for all things Wedding Registry, we get a lot of questions here at Zola from guests looking to pick out the perfect wedding present. Some of you may even be wondering if you need to purchase a wedding gift at all. Read on for our complete guide on wedding gift etiquette.

As anyone whos attended a wedding can attest, there are quite a few expenses that come along with celebrating your loved ones wedding. Between attending the bridal shower, travelling to the bachelorette party, and adhering to the dress code, your budget might even be tapped before you even receive the formal invitation if youre in the wedding party.

Although, contrary to what you might think, an invitation to a wedding isnt a request for a gift, says Lauren Kay, the executive editor of The Knot, one of our go-to sites to find wedding inspiration, planning resources, and more. As a guest, you have no obligation to get the couple something, but chances are youre excited about the duo and want to show them some love, she adds.

Do You Need To Buy Something On The Registry

“If you know the couple well enough to find something that’s fabulous off the registry, go for it,” Easton says. “For instance, if they love Portofino and you get them a gorgeous painting, that’s amazing. But don’t do any guesswork. If you are stressed about thinking of what to get, registries are gift-giving made easy.” The couple registered only for things they loved, wanted, or neededit’s best to stick to their wish list.

If you shop the registry too late and find that little you’d gift remains, there are a few ways to approach it. You’ll frequently find that single pieces of a couple’s desired china pattern, glassware set, cookware packages, and objet remain on the registrymeaning that the couple is an item short of some of their favorite things. “I actually think it’s fun to give a hodgepodge,” Blum says. But there’s only one chic way to do that: Pick up all the scraps until they amount to a substantial amount spent, perhaps around $300+, then send a cheeky yet thoughtful note along with the more random assortment.

“If the registry has nothing left on it, gift them a dinner at a fine dining property they love or use the venue as a way to dictate a creative gift off-registry,” Hamilton advises.

Blum takes a more practical approach: a beautifully made wooden salad bowl and servingware. “Couples get more decanters than they know what to do with,” she explains. “This is something they’ll always need, but definitely isn’t anyone’s first choice to gift or register for.”
