When it comes to travel, sometimes the only thing worse than a delayed plane is a delayed period that you were expecting. On a recent work trip, my periodwhich is typically on a pretty regular scheduledidnt arrive when it should have, leaving me in the lurch. Would it appear in the middle of a long car ride? During sunrise yoga? On the 11-hour flight home? Waitwas I pregnant?
In the end, my period showed up four days after its anticipated arrival. I started to wonder if my traveling was behind its belated appearance. As it turns out, there is something to this theory. Before you spend time on your next trip trying to find a pregnancy test in a foreign pharmacy, heres what you should know about how travel can affect menstruation.
Circadian rhythms are one main reason travel seems to affect periods, Carla Bossano, M.D., assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, tells SELF.
In the simplest terms, your circadian rhythms are the ways your body changes in response to intervals of light and dark. Among many other processes, your circadian rhythms help to regulate your bodys hormonal fluctuations, according to the National institute of General Medical Sciences. As you probably know, your hormones dictate a lot about menstruation.

Combined Birth Control Pill
Taking two packs of a combined birth control pill could delay the period. For how many days you need to take the pill? And when you need to start taking the pill? will depend on the type of pill. For monophasic or daily pills, take the 21-day course and instead of taking the dummy pills for the subsequent seven days, start a new pack of active pills to delay the period.

I cant lie: I have a personal reason for wanting to investigate a pressing new coronavirus/period question, specifically if stress from the coronavirus crisis can affect periods. But What About If Youre Taking Birth Control
Lets start with combined hormonal birth control , which contain both estrogen and progestin. The estrogen in these contraceptives suppresses or prevents ovulation. overrides the whole system, Dr. Minkin says. Because youre not ovulating as regularly or at all, your body doesnt get the message to build up your uterine lining in preparation for pregnancy, so theres nothing to regularly shed. The monthly bleeding you can experience during the placebo week in a pill pack is actually caused by a hormonal withdrawal, not a real period.
Can stress throw your cycle out of whack even on combined hormonal birth control? Its theoretically possible, but way less likely, Dr. Minkin says. The main exception would be if your stress around the pandemic is making you less diligent about how you take your birth control, like forgetting a bunch of pills in a row, which could then lead to period issues like breakthrough bleeding. Its a less direct way for stress to affect your period than by directly acting on your hormones, but it still counts.
Finally, if youve stopped using birth control during the pandemic, you can deal with period changes, especially a heavier or more painful period if thats what you had pre-birth control and your contraception was helping to manage it.

- everyday pills, such as Microgynon ED and Lorynon ED you take a combined pill every day. The first 21 pills are active pills and the next 7 pills are inactive or dummy pills, when you have your period. To delay your period, miss out and throw away the dummy pills, and start the active pills in a new packet straight away.
- phasic 21-day pills, such as Binovium, Qlaira and Logynon the mix of hormones in each pill is different, depending on which phase you’re in. You need to take these pills in the correct order to have effective contraception. Ask your pharmacist, community contraception clinic or GP for more information.
Taking your contraceptive pills in the ways described above will not affect how they work as contraceptives.

Where Can I Get The Period Delay Pill
Chemist Boots have offered a period delay service for several years and Superdrug have now launched their own which cuts out the need to go to the GP.
The service is available at Boots for women aged 16-54 who are not using any other kind of contraceptive pill or hormonal contraceptive, but you must be over the age of 18 to use Superdrugs service.
The process of getting the pill is slightly different between the two:
- Boots require you to fill in a simple, 5 minute online clinic form to assess suitability. Once your application has been approved by the clinicians in their pharmacies , you can then collect the medication for free from one of their 2,300 stores, or pay for delivery, including next day. Boots offer a 20-day delay service.
- Superdrug offers the pills through their Online Doctor service, on a walk-in basis or by making an appointment with its health clinic. If you go in person, youll have a consultation with one of their pharmacy team, fill in a questionnaire about your suitability and can then buy the pill on the spot. Superdrug offer 10, 20, and 30-day length packets of medication.
If you take the combined contraceptive pill, then you dont need to worry about delaying your period with a new pill. Take two packets back-to-back and skip the one-week break in between and youre period will be delayed until you next take your pill break.

How Else Can You Delay Your Period
Although norethisterone is safe and can work well for many women who want to occasionally postpone their period, it can come with side effects – so it’s worth trying it out before your holiday to see how it will affect you. Before you delay your period, you should speak with your GP who can advise the best option for you.
There’s no guaranteed way to postpone your period, but it might be possible if you take the combined contraceptive pill back-to-back. In fact, the FRSH has recently changed its guidance on taking the pill. They point out that there’s no harm from missing ‘periods’ on the pill, because they’re not actually periods at all – they’re withdrawal bleeds when the daily dose of hormone is withdrawn for a week.
They suggest doctors should offer all women the choice of taking the pill for three weeks with a four-day, rather than a seven-day, break taking the pill without any break taking a break after every third pack rather than after every pack or taking the pill continuously until you have a breakthrough bleed.
If you are on the progestogen-only pill – also known as the mini pill – then this is taken every day of the month without a break. It is not possible to delay your period with this pill.
Some other forms of contraception, such as the injection or the Mirena coil, may make periods lighter or stop them altogether, but this is not the case for all women.
