Where To Sell Unworn/unaltered Wedding Dress
Posted in Wedding Attire0
I bought a wedding dress but am needing to sell it. It is a beautiful dress but the cost I was quoted to alter it to my size was more expensive than the dress itself and we have since changed plans and are privately marrying so I no longer need this dress. I am struggling selling it! The shop I bought it from will not give me a refund. Ive posted it on Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, and a few local wedding Facebook groups. There are some wedding websites that I would have to pay to post it for sale, which Im not interested in doing because I dont want to lose any additional money. Any suggestions?

Have A Fair Returns Policy
Be considerate of the fact that wedding dresses are a large purchase, and think about the returns policy youd be drawn to if you were buying a second-hand dress.
Youd probably want to be able to try the dress on at home, then send it back if it wasnt quite right, so mention that youre happy for other brides to do the same in the listing. Its likely to mean your dress will attract more attention, even if it does take a little longer to properly sell.
Facebook Buy And Sell Groups
Another local option to sell your wedding dress is on Facebook Buy and Sell groups or through the Facebook Marketplace.
These groups will sell almost anything, so you wont be marketing to brides only. The upside is that the buyers are local, so you dont have to worry about shipping your dress.
Include lots of photos, a good description, and a competitive price when listing your dress. You may have to negotiate on the final price, so leave some bargaining room.
Itll probably take you longer to sell your dress via Facebook, but there are no fees to create a listing.

Tips For Selling Your Used Wedding Dress Online
When looking to sell your wedding dress, there are a few factors to consider. First of all, make sure your dress is in good condition without any tears, stains, or other damage. Since youve likely only worn the dress once, its probably still in good condition.
Also, keep in mind that photos sell. The more photos you can include from all different angles, the better.
You can include both photos of you in the dress and the dress on a hanger, but make sure to show any important details such as beadwork or a special lace design up close.
Provide all relevant information such as size, exact color , petticoats, and so on. If the dress was altered in any way, try to describe the alterations with as much detail as possible.

Cut down on travel, avoid problems with postage and find a local seller using our search tools to see dresses for sale near your town, city or country and within a few miles radius of your home.
How Long Will It Take To Sell My Wedding Dress
The time it will take to sell your wedding dress depends on various factors including the brand, style, size, and condition. Also, keep in mind that the popularity of the marketplace or store you select to use for your listing will play a role in how much traffic your dress gets and how quickly it sells.
On average, expect your dress to sell within 60 to 90 days of listing provided its a popular brand and style, in excellent condition, and no more than a couple of years old. Dresses that are an older style, not in good condition, or are a lower-demand size may take longer to sell.

Turn Dresses Into Cash
If youre starting to get tired of eyeballing the bridesmaid dresses hanging in the back of your closet, perhaps its time to get a new game plan and figure out what to do with them. Sure, you can strategize on how to wear them again at a future event or even virtual wedding, but what if you could turn those old dresses into cash? If youve ever wondered how to sell your old bridesmaid dresses and turn the layers of chiffon and polyester into money, here are seven ways to help make that happen.
How To Price & Care For Your Dress
If your gown is new you can sell it for about 50% of the original price tag. This is because newer gowns are being searched by brides looking for these hot styles. If your gown comes with a designer name, or even a popular indie tag then you could even price it a little higher.
Second-hand wedding dresses can range from designer labels to highly sought-after indie designs that have been discontinued. Do some quick research on the web and see what other similar gowns are selling for. Depending on the platform you choose, they will help you pick a good selling price as well.
Consider getting your gown professionally cleaned. It will cost you a few hundred dollars but will ensure that your gown is in its best condition and is much more desirable for the bride making the purchase. And since some retail sites offer return periods, it will ensure that theres less of a chance that someone will want to make a return.

Be Honest About The Condition
Take clear pictures of your dress so buyers know exactly what it looks like. You need to be completely upfront about any damage, including tears or stains. Pictures sell products, so be sure to include different angles, close-ups of unique design patterns, and even pictures of you in the gown. Good lighting is critical to getting good photos, so try to find a place with great natural light when taking photos of the dress.
How Much Can I Sell My Used Wedding Dress For
How much you can sell your used wedding dress for depends on a number of factors.
As a general rule of thumb, a used wedding dress in great condition and under two years old can usually sell for 50% of the retail price. If your dress is a designer brand such as Vera Wang, you can get closer to 60% of the retail value.
There are calculators that can estimate how much you can get for your wedding dress. Enter some general information such as your dresss brand, condition, size, etc. and you can get an estimate for the value of your gown.

Get Selling As Soon As The Big Day Is Over
If your dress is part of a designer collection, the sooner you sell your dress, the higher the chance of selling it. If you sell your dress within three years of buying it, you’ll catch the brides who are hunting for that specific design, either because it’s no longer available or they can’t afford it at full retail price. Vintage dresses won’t date as quickly, but it may be worth noting which eras are popular and planning accordingly – for example, ’70s dresses are selling well right now, but there are a few years to go before ’80s styles make a comeback.

Selling A Wedding Dress Locally
Selling your wedding dress to a bride near you seems like a good idea. Namely, because you dont have to deal with shipping. Unfortunately, there are other challenges involved in selling a wedding dress locally.
If you dont want to take the online route to sell your wedding dress, consider a local resale store. You might think it would be easier to just drop your gown at a consignment shop and collect payment. Unfortunately, thats not how it works. It could take much longer to sell your wedding dress than youd like. Most importantly, youll probably get less money for a used wedding dress when selling locally. Due to lower competition in a local market, there wont be any urgency for a bride to spend more.

The unfortunate reality is that you probably wont find stores that will buy your dress for cash to resell it. Its uncommon to find shops that will buy wedding dresses upfront at all. Its more common for shops to hold gowns in their stores and take a commission on the sale price. The other possible option would be that a shop would give you the small commission on the wedding dress resale, keeping the lions share of the purchase price for themselves.
Things To Consider Before Selling Your Wedding Dress
Often when brides ask us about selling a wedding dress, its because theyve found a dress they love thats outside of their budget, and theyre considering spending a little extra in the hope of making some of the money back after the wedding. Its a good plan, in theory, but there are a few factors to bear in mind before you hand over that credit card.
- The kind of wedding dress youve got in mind is it a popular style and size?
- The style of wedding youre having is the dress likely to be in good condition after the wedding? This is particularly important if youre having your ceremony in a forest, taking your portraits on a beach etc.
- Your plans for immediately after the wedding is there time to get the dress dry cleaned and put it up for sale? Manys the bride who tossed her dress in a bag as she headed off on honeymoon, only to forget all about it upon return!
- How motivated you are to sell your wedding dress are you an organisational marvel? Or the kind of person who tends to shove problems in the cupboard and hope theyll go away
Before you buy an over-budget dress with the idea of selling it after the wedding, ask yourself if you afford to buy the dress if you dont sell it afterwards? Things happen, red wine spills, dresses tear, dry cleaners mess up, dresses fail to sell. If, for whatever reason, you cant sell your dress, can you take the hit for the full cost?
