How Much Can Dresses Sell For
Whether youre buying or selling a preowned gown, you need to be realistic about the cost. While 10% of designer dresses resale for above $2,500, 70% of used dresses are priced at $1,000 or below, which is something to consider when pricing your gown, says Richardson. Do research to see what other similar used dresses are going for and consider factors like age, wear, and designer.
If youre hesitant about purchasing a pre-owned dress, know that used dresses dont necessarily mean old. Of all dresses sold across A07 Online Medias marketplaces, 25% are from the past year or two, and 37% of all the dresses sold are new. Purchasing from a bride who changed her mind or a boutique with a canceled order could save you hundreds.
Where To Donate An Old Wedding Dress
If you got married recently or a few years ago, there is a high chance that you are left with one token. You do not need to hold on to your wedding dress. Usually, brides spend a large amount of the wedding budget on their attire.
Most brides will only wear this dress once, hoping there will be another chance, which is not the case. If you are looking for ideas for where to donate an old wedding dress, we have got some options for you.
Think how amazing it would be if a bride that is underprivileged gets to enjoy your expensive bridal gown too. If you donate the dress, it can help a family or bride in need and make you feel better. Another cherry on the cake is donations are tax-deductible.
Many non-profit organizations collect wedding dress donations and distribute them to brides in need. They also sell them at lower prices. Not just a bridal dress, bridesmaid dresses, and flower girl dresses can also be donated. You can even donate bridal accessories.
Before deciding where to donate an old wedding dress, make sure you have your receipts and other purchasing documentation related to the wedding accessories so that you can determine the fair market value. Some charitable organizations recycle wedding dresses as well. Many charity institutions act as a middleman, so you do not have to think about where to donate old wedding dress.

How To Prepare Your Wedding Dress For Donation
While most charities and shops offer to clean your donation items, some have a few guidelines about donations. Others may also charge an extra fee for cleaning. Here is a checklist to follow in making sure your donations are in the best conditions.
1. Contact the Organizations in advance. Ask what they need specifically, as well as for their donation schedule and protocols. Most charities and thrift shops that accept wedding dresses require them to be less than five years old.
2. Inspect the gown for wear and tear. When left in storage for too long, some items and certain types of fabric may develop mold. If your wedding dress looks to be in bad condition, the charity will most likely have to throw it out.
3. Wash or dry clean in advance. This step is graciously helpful for the volunteers, especially if youre donating your wedding dress or other items during the pandemic. According to the CDC, the COVID-19 virus can remain on surfaces and certain fabrics for a couple of days. You can also use a disinfectant spray on non-washable items.
4. Double-check items before packing. Ensure you havent accidentally packed items you planned to keep. Always check the pockets for small personal items, such as wallets and money.
Make Sure To Include Photos
The most important thing you can do to market your dress is to include quality photos, advises Richardson. Include photos from your wedding so brides can see how it photographs and envision how it might look on their own big day. Plus, most gowns look better on a body than they do on a hanger. If you dont feel comfortable showcasing your wedding photos, make sure to include some shots of the dress on your body so other brides can get an idea of how the fabric lays.

Other Ways To Declutter Your Bridal Gown
If you choose not to donate the dress, here are other ways you can declutter your wedding gown and get it out of your home.
Repurpose The Dress Fabric Into A Different Keepsake
You could repurpose the dress fabric to make it something else. Some great ideas for this include:
- Christening or baptism gown
- Pillow, such as a ring bearer’s pillow that a child can walk down the aisle at another wedding
- Bag or clutch, used for another wedding or formal occasion
- Christmas tree skirt
Sell Your Wedding Gown
You can also sell your wedding dress at a discounted rate to someone looking for a lower cost gown.
This works best when the gown is in good condition, clean, and relatively new so it’s still in style.
There are tons of great places to sell your wedding dress and make a few dollars while giving someone else a great deal on a beautiful gown. You can easily post it on Craigslist, eBay, local swap shop or classified pages and even in your local newspaper or consignment shop.
You can get even more ideas for places to donate items when decluttering your home, plus do’s and don’ts for what to donate to charities, in my donate clutter section of the site.
The Angel Gown Program
NICU Helping Hands Angel Gown® Program began in 2013 because we recognized there was an overwhelming need for better support for families who lost a baby. Our Angel Gown® Program provides comfort for bereaved families through the gift of a beautiful custom made gown for final photos and for burial services. We provide support resources and mentoring programs for bereaved families as well. There is no greater gift that can be given to a grieving family than affirming the importance of the life of their child by offering the simple gift of our Angel Gown® Garments and supporting them emotionally and educationally afterwards.
Our program is made possible because of wonderful donors and volunteers who have often experienced the loss of their own children or of another loved one. Brides from around the world donate their precious wedding gowns to NICU Helping Hands. The wedding gowns are then distributed to our team of over 180 seamstresses throughout the United States to convert into perfectly made garments that a family will use to wrap their precious baby in for their final journey. Our garments are a gift of love from both a bride and a seamstress to honor not only a precious baby but their family as well.
It is a privilege for us to provide gowns free of charge to any hospital or family requesting our Angel Gown® Program garments. Please note: Our Angel Gown® Program is a nationally registered and trademarked program and is available across the United States.

There Is No One Right Decision About Whether To Keep Or Get Rid Of Your Wedding Gown
Before we get into the heart of the article though, I do want to acknowledge that even discussing whether to declutter your wedding dress can be a touchy subject for some people.
There’s a lot of emotion caught up in wedding gowns. For some that emotion is positive, and for others it is negative.
These emotions are often less about the dress itself than about the marriage and the memories that the gown represents.
There is nothing wrong with choosing to keep your wedding dress and storing it. There is equally nothing wrong with donating or using it for a keepsake item. The choice is yours, and yours alone. Do what feels right to you.
If you decide to keep the dress make sure you’re storing it properly. You can check out my general tips for clothes storage here for ideas of where and how to store this keepsake and sentimental item.
