Whether you’re a wedding professional, real estate investor, or simply an entrepreneur interested in the wedding industry, starting a wedding venue can be a big business opportunity. But it’s also a big commitment. Learning how to start a wedding venue means you’ll have to be undeterred by the idea of navigating zoning committees, renovation costs, and financing.
Because, even as changing trends sweep through the industry , in reality, a great wedding venue doesnt need a ton of bells and whistles to host fantastic weddings. So, if you’re a fearless entrepreneur, starting a wedding venue just might be the perfect opportunity to open your first business, or expand an existing one.
These six steps should help you get on your way to starting the wedding venue of your dreams.
Couples Want To Stay Within Budget
Color schemes and dress choices may not be set in stone at this point, but the budget is often non-negotiable. Be up-front about budgeting, disclose added costs, and let the couple know what they get with a contract. Surprises are great for proposals, but unwelcome when it comes to venue cost.
The ease and potential savings of an all-inclusive venue may win over the budget-conscious couples. DIYers may opt for an à la carte venue that allows them to amp up the personal touches. There are others who fall somewhere in between. Be open to adjusting packages to suit couples: Personalized touches and custom-crafted contracts can win over couples who are looking for something outside of common venue agreements.
Deal-seekers and couples with smaller budgets may be willing to go for an off-season booking, a weekday evening, or Sunday wedding rather than a Saturday. Accommodating these bookings can fill your venue during slow seasons, and give their budget a break.
Wedding Venue Checklist Part : When And How To Schedule A Tour
Another great tip for your wedding venue checklist is to visit your prospective venues around the same season and time that youd like to host your wedding. Dreaming of a fresh spring wedding with a morning ceremony? Schedule your site visit on an early spring morning to get an accurate look at the place. Venues take on new character depending on the time of year, and even the time of day, that youre getting married.
To schedule the site visit tour, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the venue website. The process will vary location to location, but for the most part their page should list the best way to contact them and what materials theyll ask you to bring. Some experts even recommend booking the tour visit before you officially decide on a wedding date. That way your options will still be open and you can pick the wedding venue that you love, then schedule the rest of your plans around it.

Once youve come up with an airtight business plan and a good location, its time to start building up your portfolio of wedding vendors. Creating a strong network of professionals in the wedding industry before your venue is open will help it flourish. trial and error, said Hansen. If a vendor did a good job, I recommended them. If they didnt do a good job, Id try not to have them back. We have an open vendor policy but I do have a preferred vendors list.

Do Wedding Venues Provide The Dj
Usually, the bride and groom hire their own DJ for their big day. Remember to chat to your chosen venue about lighting requirements, and whether they provide a wedding DJ sound system long before the event.
Alternatively, ask your DJ to get in touch with the venue to confirm the details.
Private DJ services prices vary from $470 to $600 or more depending on how experienced the DJ is, travel costs, and how long you want to hire them.
Do You Need Cake At A Wedding
Everyone wins!! Are you still concerned about the cake cutting at e cake cutting is still an important part of a wedding? There will be some controversy surrounding this, but it will not be a riot. In this way, you can still use them as a design feature and serve your guests, but not in the traditional way where you cater to everyone.

And If You Dont Like Any Of The Above Try These Options
Cab CompaniesIf you are against offering transportation, then provide the telephone numbers of several cab vendors in the area so guests can make their own arrangements to get to the wedding. Towards the end of the wedding, remind folks to start calling cab companies or arrange to get a ride back to the hotel. The disadvantage is that some areas have inexplicably poor cab service late at night.
Friend Or Family MemberGet a friend or a family member to do the rides. Try to rent a van for them to use so they dont end up using their own transportation. Just make sure to thank them with a special gift at the end. It does not have to be expensive but a little something will go a long way towards showing your appreciation.
Use this option only if you have very few people that need shuttle service. You dont want to abuse your relationships by having this person drive for 3 hours before the wedding and than 3 hours after.
As we have learned, providing transportation for out of town wedding guests is not a necessity and isnt expected of you. However, it does add a nice touch as long as you can afford the cost.
Important Questions To Ask Your Wedding Venue Before Your Tour
First things first, you have to set up the actual tour. Before setting foot on the premises, consider confirming these three major details. After all, you don’t want to fall in love with a venue that’s outside of your budget or isn’t available on your selected date. Call or email your favorite potential venues to set up an official site visitâthen ask them about these three points.

Wedding Planner Vs Wedding Designer
Chances are once you got engaged you quickly realized that there is an entire vocabulary or language of wedding-speak. I often hear couples confuse and interchange the terms wedding designer, planner, and coordinator understandably so. A planner is almost always a coordinator, but a coordinator is not always a planner. A planner can be a designer as well, but a designer is not always a planner or a coordinator. And some are all three. Have I thoroughly confused you?
Although most wedding professionals are a combination of the three, each have specific duties when it comes to what wedding services they provide. Here are the differences between the them:
A wedding designer is responsible for the overall visual aesthetic of the wedding. Designers think in terms of the big picture. They generate the wedding design and decor concept and how that concept will be threaded through each visual element. Often they will work in conjunction with florists, lighting technicians, and photographers to create the look and feel of the event.

Choose A Location To Build A Wedding Venue
If youre taking over an existing space, your location is already picked out for you. But if youre building your own wedding venue on a plot of land, theres a lot to consider when it comes to the location. Do you envision endless rolling hills in the countryside as the backdrop for wedding ceremonies or do you picture your clients saying I do in the hustle and bustle of a big city? I stumbled upon this historic, 120-year-old mansion one day on the way to go grocery shopping, said Hansen. I thought it would be a great place for weddings, and somehow I got approved for the mortgage. The mansion that Hansen bought had always been a private residence, so there were a lot of renovations to be done to turn it into an event space. Her biggest challenge? Navigating local zoning laws and building regulations.

I Know I Live In Dallas But I Really Had My Heart Set On A Beach Wedding
Before, I started looking for venues, I had perused enough wedding blogs to know exactly what type of wedding I wanted. I wanted it to be held in a private estate or a vineyard with rolling green hills and impeccable landscaping. You know, like those beautiful California weddings you see ALL over the blogs. When I started looking for actual venues in my hometown of Houston, I quickly realized I didn’t live in California. There were no vineyards with rolling green hills and an outdoor wedding was pretty much a no-go with my budget. What I should have done was examine the types of venues available to me and built a dream wedding with them in mind. Instead, I spent months looking for a venue that didn’t exist based on my imaginary dream wedding.
