To make your ring smaller, a jeweler will heat up and cut a small portion of the band and attach the pieces back together. Afterward, a jeweler will flawlessly polish and clean the band. Its important to note you may choose to keep the piece of metal if you need to size up your ring in the future. Finer Custom Jewelry

Sizing Beads aka BBs is also a method that can be used to make your ring smaller. The jeweler solders two small gold/platinum beads on the inside of the shank towards the bottom. This option is used for issues with the ring going over the knuckle. It is first enlarged via traditional sizing and the BBs are then added for security once it is in place. This method is also used for top heavy rings that may spin or rings that are the correct size, but may move side-to-side given the top weight. Michelle Shetler, Founder, Shetler Fine Jewelers

Similarly, Horseshoe or Stirrup resizing where the jeweler solders a solid gold/plat bar inside the base of the shank. This option is best for making rings with a continuous design, such as eternity bands, smaller in size as it does not impact the integrity of the ring design Michelle Shetler, Founder, Shetler Fine Jewelers

How To Know If You Should Resize Your Ring:

Both wedding rings and especially engagement rings usually need to be resized it is difficult to measure a persons finger without giving away why. There are two indications that a ring may need to be resized:

  • The Ring Wont Go On without a struggle. If a ring has a lot of trouble going over the knuckle, then it could be an indication that the ring may need to be adjusted to a slightly larger size.
  • The Ring Slides On And Off Loosely. If a ring seems to glide on and off the finger effortlessly, then this is an indication that the ring may need to be adjusted to a slightly smaller size.
  • A ring that fits properly is one that will slide on fairly easily yet, there will also be a moderate resistance to keep the ring in place or from sliding off. Fingers can vary in size due to weather, exercise, or recent salt intake. Throughout the year you will have days that your rings fit extra tight or a bit loose. This fluctuation in your fingers is completely normal.

How To Make A Ring Smaller

When a jeweler makes a ring size smaller, they will cut out a piece of the ring band and form it into a perfect circle. Then they will join the two pieces back together. Finally, the ring will be cleaned from any oxidation that occurred during the resizing process.

Resizing a ring to a smaller size is an intricate but relatively simple process. The metal will need to be heated to a perfect temperature that is not too hot or too cold. If the metal is too cold, it will be difficult to work with. If the metal is too hot, the heat can change the chemical components of the metal. The ring has to be heated to the perfect temperature when sizing to ensure the chemical properties of the ring stay the same while also being easy to work with.

This is why we recommend taking your ring back to the original jewelry store for resizing. The jeweler will have the experience necessary to heat the ring and shape the ring so that it doesnt lose any of its integrity.

Ring Sizing Alternative : Spring Insert

A spring insert is a particularly good alternative for people with large knuckles. A spring insert is a thin metal band that is attached on the inside of the ring, which flattens out when putting on the ring and springs back into place, past the knuckle, as it sits on your finger. This can be a more comfortable alternative than the sizing beads and is also easier to put in however, it is a more complicated procedure and would require an experienced jeweler. A spring insert can alter your ring size by up to one whole size, giving a bit more flexibility than sizing beads. Additionally, since it doesnt involve cutting the band of the ring at all, it maintains the integrity and strength of the metal, but still offers more comfort and a better fit than a ring without it.

Wedding rings and engagement rings are the most common types of rings that carry immense sentimental value for their owners. Sometimes one may want to give a ring as a surprise gift, for example in engagement rings, but fail to have the correct size for the intended recipient.

You dont have to worry if you missed the correct size of the ring for your partner, or fingers have grown bigger or smaller. If the ring doesnt fit, you can always resize the ring to fit.

    Resize Wedding Ring Smaller

Making your wedding ring smaller is much easier than making the ring bigger. The jeweler simply has to cut out a small portion of the band and join them back together. The jeweler will simply solder them back together.

Once the ring is soldered, the jeweler will clean and polish the ring to remove antioxidants that may result from soldering and to smooth its surface.

How Should An Engagement Ring Fit

An engagement ring should fit just like any other ring it should slide on fairly easily, but resist enough when sliding off that theres no risk of it falling off without your partner noticing.

A good way to check the fit of an engagement ring is to put it on, then try to take it off. If it slides onto the ring finger easily but needs one to three seconds of pressure to get over the knuckle on the way off, its probably a fairly good fit.

If it gets stuck behind your partners knuckle and needs to be pried off, its probably too tight and needs to be adjusted to a larger size.

If it slides off without any pressure , its probably too loose and needs to be adjusted to a smaller size.

Remember, your knuckle is the largest part of your finger. An engagement ring should feel light and comfortable when its on the finger, without any obvious squeezing or discomfort, but it also shouldnt be able to slide over your partners knuckle too easily.

Not sure if your engagement ring is a good fit or not? Ask your jeweler. Theyll be able to quickly let you know if your ring fits properly of it it needs to be resized by watching it slide onto and off of your partners finger.

How To Work Out How Much To Add Or Remove

How to Resize a Titanium Wedding Band

This can be determined by measuring the ring in its current size, and then working out the difference between that and the new size required. The difference in each UK ring size can be equated to approximately 1mm or 1/32 inch. For example, if the ring is currently UK size M and it needs to be a UK size O that would be a difference of two sizes or about 2mm. However, this is a rough amount so the size does need to be checked, but to be exact you can generally do this with binding wire using the below method.

Wrap a piece of binding wire around your ring gauge/stick at the current ring size, by twisting the ends together to make a tight fit. Remove and snip it open at the top of the loop, and flatten it out so you have a straight line to measure. This will give you the length of your ring. Next, repeat the process but using the new ring size required. Once you have the two pieces of wire side by side, measure the difference between them and this will give an accurate measurement as to how much metal to add or takeaway as required.

    Limitations Of Ring Resizing

If youve inherited a ring or received a ring as a gift, its important to ensure the ring is within 1-2 sizes of your ring size as rings can only be resized so much. This means that theres an actual limit to how much you can add or remove from a ring.

If a ring needs to be upsized or downsized greater than two sizes, resizing is simply not a good choice. Essentially, resizing a ring too far from your ring size can damage the ring. Additionally, the style of ring and ring metal will affect whether or not it can be resized.

What About Rings With Precious Stones

Rings set with jewels as engagement and wedding rings, for example, often are pose challenges for resizing too.

Rings with a number of stones set around the band can be tricky to work with. The jeweler may need to remove and reposition the stones so that they remain evenly spaced. Rings, where the jewels are set into channels in the band, are particularly challenging, and really arent suitable for resizing.

If youve got a ring with a tension set jewel, adjusting the size needs to be handled with great care. In tension settings, the jewel is held in place by the pressure of the band. Its a very distinctive look, with the stone appearing to float in the middle of the ring.

But if the band isnt resized precisely, you may end up with a stone thats off-center. And because the band is calibrated precisely to hold the stone, resizing can interfere with its delicate balance. The ring will become less durable, and you even risk losing the jewel altogether.

Theres also a relationship between the type of metal your ring is made of and the color of any stone. If your ring is made of platinum, it will need to be exposed to higher temperatures to be resized. And if it has a colored stone, the jeweler will need to take care that the heat doesnt damage the color.

That can be done by using a laser rather than a flame in the soldering process. Discuss your options with your jeweler and make sure theyll guarantee the safety of your stone before you proceed.

When And How To Make A Ring Smaller Without Sizing

A proper fit for a ring is essential. Too loose and you risk losing it. Too tight and it’s uncomfortable and hard to remove.

When your ring doesn’t fit properly, your first thought is to get it resized.

Often, this is the safest, most permanent option. However, it’s not always the best choice, and temporary solutions can be ideal under certain circumstances.

Ring Sizing Alternative : Sizing Beads

An effective and easy way to resize rings

Sizing beads are a great choice when you just need a slight size adjustment or if youre dealing with a spinning ring. Adding sizing beads to your ring is a very simple process: The jeweler simply solders two small metal beads on the inside of the band. This is a great way to keep your ring upright on your finger, and it can help get a smaller ring over your knuckles. This approach essentially fakes the smaller size ring, giving you the benefits of a better fit without the downsides of actually making it smaller. This is the most common and inexpensive solution people get, but sizing beads can only be used to make the ring up to half a size smaller. Additionally, some people dont love the feel of a ring with sizing beads, so its a good idea to ask your jeweler to try on some rings with this sizing option to get a feel for what its like.

    How Is A Ring Resized

To upsize a ring, the jeweler will cut the ring and spread the metal in order to fill the gap with additional materials. Afterward, the ring is soldered together and forms a larger size.

To downsize a ring, the jeweler cuts the ring and removes portions of the metal before soldering the ring back together.

Sizing Down Your Ring With Silicone

  • 1Clean the ring thoroughly. Soak the ring in a solution of hot water and dishwashing soap. Use a soft toothbrush to brush the metal and any stones set on the ring.
  • Dry the ring thoroughly before moving on.
  • Avoid using cleaners with bleach, acetone or chlorine, as these can damage a rings metal band.XResearch source
  • 2Use a coffee stir stick to apply silicone sealant inside the ring. Make sure to use clear silicone, like food grade or aquarium grade silicone. Youll want the bottom part of the ring to have the thickest application. Unless the ring is very loose on your finger, you should use a small amount of silicone.XResearch sourceAdvertisement
  • 3Smooth the silicone with the coffee stir stick. As the silicone will be directly against your skin, youll want to try to smooth it out as much as possible. Run the stick along the inside of the ring until the silicone smooths out.XResearch source
  • You can use a wet paper towel to clean any silicone that gets on the outside of the ring.
  • 4Let the silicone cure. Depending on the type of silicone you use, this can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours. Resist the temptation to wear your ring during this time, as it will take longer for the silicone to cure and might dislodge it entirely.XResearch source
  • If you need to remove the silicone, you simply need to scratch at it with your fingernail.
