How Much Do You Pay A Minister Rabbi Or Other Religious Officiant To Marry You

Many religious officiants who are affiliated with a house of worship dont have a set fee, so it can be a bit confusing to figure out how much to pay them. If you are getting married in a house of worship, the cost of a wedding officiant may be included in the venue fee. If thats not the case, you will likely be expected to give a donation, anywhere from $100 to $300 or more . If youre unsure, dont be afraid to ask the house of worship with which your officiant is affiliated if they have a suggested amount.

Officiate a wedding

It’s difficult to nail down an exact number, as wedding officiant rates differ so much. The cost of a wedding officiant will vary based on the location, the length of the ceremony and the level of personalization. A good starting point is to allot two percent of your overall wedding budget for your wedding officiant. Plan on using more if you’d like a personalized ceremony or if you have any special requests.

The Officiant Enters As Part Of The Processional

This is the old-school, traditional, high-church way to start a wedding ceremony . The officiant marches in at the head of the retinue and the ceremony is pretty much underway when he/she gets to the front. To be honest, I dont know much about this one.

In all my years of officiating, Ive never kicked one off this way. So I dont usually present it to the couple as an option. If youre a high church clergyperson, this is what you likely do. But youre probably not reading this.

Thats why Im numbering this one as Option 0. Its ground zero, and was historically the option for how the officiant takes the front, and it dates back to a time when giving the couple options wasnt an option.

So here are the 4 actual options for the 21st century. These are the choices I give my couples in our wedding planning session.

The Officiant Enters Alone

So as the wedding officiant Ive made my last checks, its start time, and all the guests are in their seats. The prelude music thats been in the background for the last half-hour-or-so is lightly playing.

I take a deep breath, and walk down the centre aisle or come in from the side alone. I get to the front, turn, and start the wedding ceremony with a welcome and a few opening remarks before the processional starts with my cue, With that, lets begin.

Remember , when we officiants are doing our ceremony opening remarks, we technically havent started yet. Its the processional music that does that the first note of the song is like hitting the ignition on a car, and thats when one of both members of the wedding couple come in. Theyre not both in the room just yet. All this front-end stuff is before we begin, as I tell everyone off the top.

The officiant entering alone is a great option when these two conditions are in play:

First , sometimes Partner 1 will want to seat one or both parents on his/her way to the front.

This is called honourary seating: accompanying a very important family member to his/her reserved seat as a way of honouring him/her.

Heres what this option can look like.

Second , sometimes Partner 1 will opt to be a part of the processional along with Partner 1s wedding party.

If either of those arent happening, we move on to presenting our couple with the next 3 options.

How to Become a Wedding Officiant

Undoubtably, what matters most during this process is fulfilling the happy couple’s vision and dream for their wedding day. The best way to ensure you are creating a ceremony that will make those dreams come true is to get inside their heads.

  • Homework. Have each of them fill out acouples questionnaire before you meet with them. Ask them to be sure to do the questionnaires individually and not to share them with each other. These responses give you amazing insight into their story and wishes for the future that you can use to guide your ceremony script.

  • Vibe. When you meet with them ask questions that uncover the experience and feel of their ceremony. Things for discovery

  • Formality. Would they like to be referenced by their full names, ie Mike vs. Michael. Do they have a preference on your clothing choice on the wedding day?

  • Family Dynamics. Is there anything you should know about the expectations of their parents, grandparents, ie family traditions, religious preferences?

  • Wedding Party. How many people will there be in their wedding party. Will they include their dog, flower girls etc. Wedding party make-up can create more complications that you should be aware of or it can simply things.

  • Rehearsal. Do they want you to run the wedding rehearsal?

How Much Does It Cost To Officiate A Wedding

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.
