Traditional Wedding Officiant Speech Sample

Officiating my first wedding in Brooklyn!

And many other speech styles have adopted parts of the template. Traditional speeches by officiant have depth and are particular about love, commitment, and faithfulness.

You And Your Friend Have Similar If Not The Exact Same Values

Ive been approached by couples who have had friends back out of their weddings because their friends decided last minute they didnt agree with the couples religious views or some other drama. You and your friend must have the same values because this is the person who will also be writing and speaking these values. You want them to deliver the message with the same passion, empathy, and excitement you would have if you were delivering your friends wedding ceremony.

Do Some Research On Potential Officiants

There are many ways to go about the process of how to find a wedding officiant. Unless you know your chosen officiant well, be sure to check out the credentials of those you may consider. Lehman suggests seeking out the references of other couples who’s this person officiated. And remember that unlike other wedding vendors, your officiant has a legal role to play on your big day. Make sure that they have the necessary licensing from their local community, and the state of residence, she adds. Too often, I hear stories about how an officiant performed a ceremony, and then the marriage license was not considered valid by the clerk’s office since the person was not legally registered in their state. Also, ask if the officiant has any advanced training or academic degrees in their field. The latter is not always necessary, but can be an asset. Be sure to use WeddingWires wedding officiant finder to read reviews of officiants in your area.

Discuss What You Should Wear

All eyes will be on the coupleand also on the officiant who will be standing with them. “Plan on discussing what youll wear so there are no surprises or complaints. Even if the couple says, ‘dress any way you want,’ you need to think about your attire in the context of the role you are playing as the wedding ceremony officiantnot just a wedding guest,” Anakotta says. While you don’t want to clash with the wedding party, you also don’t want to appear overdressed , compared to the rest of the people in the ceremony photos. For all these reasons, make sure to have a frank discussion with the couple about the dress code.

Do You Need A Wedding Officiant To Get Married

Our Wedding Officiant

If you live in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Wisconsin or the District of Columbia, couples can marry sans officiant in front of witnesses, if they turn in the necessary legal paperwork. However, all other states require an officiant for a legal and recognized marriage. An officiant only needs to meet your states legal qualifications for performing your marriage ceremony.

What Is A Wedding Officiant

On paper, a wedding officiant is someone who can legally officiate a marriage ceremony. This person will not only officiate your wedding ceremony, however, depending on your situation and/or religion, he or she will work with you in the months leading up to your wedding day to make sure you both are ready for this huge life change. Off paper, a wedding officiant is a storyteller who spreads love and joy and appreciation of the privilege to bear witness to the love between two people.

The term wedding officiant includes religious leaders as well. However, a wedding officiant typically refers to a non-religious official who marries couples. This is helpful for couples who come from different religious backgrounds and want to incorporate aspects of both into their ceremony.

Confirm That He Or She Is A Confident Speaker

A good officiant is a good orator, says Larissa Banting of Weddings Costa Rica in Santa Ana, Costa Rica. They have confidence, speak clearly and understand how to create dramatic tension when necessary as well as levity, taking everyone on a journey with their words and voice. While your marriage ceremony is, indeed, about you and your spouse-to-be, and the love you share between the two of you, your officiant will be the de facto host or emcee. You don’t want someone who is overly dramatic, as they can drag everything down into the realms of parody, she says. Try to see them in action either at a service or in a video from another wedding to gauge how strong their presentation skills are.

As soon as the date of the wedding is set, you’ll want to meet with the couple to discuss their ceremony expectations and review any registration requirements. “If you have to register with the local government before performing a marriage, youll need to make sure you have copies of your credentials and fill out any necessary applications to complete the registration process. Make Your Directions Open

As you begin working on the wedding ceremony, try to offer your expectations with room for the friend to interpret. It can be much harder to feel comfortable officiating a friends wedding if you feel like there are a lot of rigid rules for how it must happen. Give guidance and advice, but do so in such a way that your friend can interpret as they wish. If you fear that youll want some input , ask for the entire ceremony to be at least loosely scripted. That way, you dont have to restrict your friend in the creative process initially.

Getting Married During Coronavirus Restrictions

To have a legal marriage ceremony, you only need the following people:

  • the marriage officiant
  • the couple
  • 2 witnesses

This means that you can get married in-person and follow the order that limits the number of people attending gatherings for the purpose of a wedding. Rules on physical distancing and face coverings still apply.

ServiceOntario continues to register marriages and issue marriage certificates. However, there may be some delays as we strive to ensure the safety of our employees and physical distancing.

Find out information about physical distancing and check with your municipality to see if there are further bylaws in place for physical distancing.

Watch A Clip Of Your Wedding Officiant Speaking Before Committing

Consider it as an audition. This might not always be possible, but if it is, listen to it. This will help you decide if he or she will be able to deliver a speech in the way you want it.

Watching a clip will also allow you to determine if he or she will be confident enough while performing the ceremony.

Your Friend Has The Time And Is Willing To Do The Work

Theres a reason good wedding officiants arent cheap. I spend a minimum of 15-20 hours per wedding ceremony on the writing alone. That doesnt include the time it takes to get to know the couple, meetings, and preparation time at rehearsals. If you or your friend dont have this time, find a professional who does. You have enough tasks to worry about for your wedding!

How Should I Officiate My Friends Marriage Party

Dr. Anna

It’s not technically a wedding, right?

Q: My dearest friend from childhood recently got married to a wonderful man. They live across the country and had a small ceremony for local friends there last year, and this year, they are planning a Marriage Party in our home state. This will be attended by all of her family and friends who live in this part of the country, and it will be a relatively casual summer party with a vow renewal ceremony.

My friend has asked me to be an unofficial master of ceremonies for this vow renewal. My basic responsibility will be to stand up and speak for a bit before inviting the couple to renew their vows in front of the group. Then, I imagine, Ill say a few words to close the ceremony. I think I should keep it relatively short and sweet, but I also know that it is very important to my friend to share this celebration with her family and friends from home. I want to make sure I include some childhood memories of her, while also describing her relationship with her husband.

Im looking for any and all advice from folks who have had a similar celebration of marriage that is not technically a wedding. What did you do for a ceremony? What was your favorite part? What do you wish was included in the ceremony? Im hoping to be prepared and to help my friend enjoy every moment of this special day.
