Consult With The Couple

Before the wedding, you’ll need to meet with the couple to iron out the details of the ceremony. They may have special requests or certain aspects they’d like included/excluded. You can also tailor the ceremony to be in line with their specific religious preferences. If the wedding is being held at a special location, you should make a point to ask about travel arrangements.

Be advised, the couple may ask you to write a script for the wedding. This can be a difficult task, which is why we’ve created a simple tool to help our ministers: the Wedding Ceremony Script Generator.

In order to ensure the ceremony goes smoothly, it may also be a good idea to hold a rehearsal. This is often necessary for elaborate ceremonies that involve the participation of the guests. While rehearsal is not as important for smaller ceremonies, you should at least create a timeline and run through it with the couple beforehand. The excitement of a wedding makes it possible to overlook important details no matter how small the ceremony.

Apply To Not Pay The Application Fee

You may be allowed to not pay the application fee if:

  • you live in a remote or very remote area, and
  • there is not more than 1 marriage celebrant who has the same postcode as you.

You must pay a $30 fee to apply for this exemption. If we approve your application, you won’t need to pay the application fee or first year’s registration charge.

You can apply for an exemption via the application portal.

We should be able to reach you at all times while we review your application, in case we need more information. If we won’t be able to reach you for a long period of time, you should tell us in advance.

We will generally make a decision within 3 months of receiving your application. When we make a decision, we will tell you by email.

If your application is unsuccessful, we will tell you why. You can also ask for a review from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Officiant Registration In Louisiana

Before officiating weddings in Louisiana you will first need to get ordained online to become a minister. This process is as easy as finding a website that offers online ordinations.

There are plenty of websites where you can go to do this. Most of them are free though some charge exorbitant fees. We will be openly biased in recommending that you get ordained with American Marriage Ministries.

Why AMM? Their ordination is free. They are set up specifically to help people perform marriage. And they are the only IRS Certified 501c3 Charitable Organization that offers online ordinations.

No matter where you choose to get ordained, once you are a minister you will then need to register with the Parish Clerks office that issues the to the couple.

Ministry Credentials Required By The Parish Clerk

signing

In addition to the Marriage Officiant Registration Affidavit you will also need to submit your Credentials of Ministry. The exact documents required varies depending on the Parish.

These credentials will take the form of one or both of two documents. Your Ordination Certificate and your Letter of Good Standing. Most counties will ask for your Letter of Good Standing, as that is the document that bears a live signature from a Church Officer.

Your Ordination Certificate

Your Ordination Certificate is exactly as it sounds. The ordination certificate, sometimes referred to as Ministry Credentials or Credentials of Ministry is the document issued by the ordaining church that bears your name and date of ordination. It usually has a seal but does not have a live signature.

Your Letter of Good Standing

Your Letter of Good Standing is a more esoteric document. It is also known as a Letter of Consent and Letter of Recommendation, though Letter of Good Standing is the most commonly used term.

The Letter of Good Standing carries more authority than an Ordination Certificate because it is signed, dated, and notarized. As the name implies, it is a letter stating that the minister in question is still in Good Standing with the church and is dated and signed.

What Is A Wedding Officiant

A wedding officiant is the leader of the wedding ceremony. They work with the couple to prepare materials for the ceremony and perform the marriage on the day-of.

According to expert Natasha Anakotta, an officiant can expect to spend “anywhere from six months to a full year before the ceremony” preparing and officiating each wedding. “This allows enough time for ordering credentials and official documents, completing minister registration, working with the couple on the ceremony creation, practicing, and working out the logistics and details,” Anakotta says.

Minister Registration Office Parish Clerk

Marriage Elegant Bride Signing Register, Holding Pen And Official ...

There are 64 parishes in Louisiana. A Parish is Louisianas equivalent of a county. The reason Louisiana has parishes instead of counties is due to the States unique history.

Louisiana was once a combination of Spanish and French colonies, both of which were overseen by the Catholic Church. The Church divided the land within these colonies into Parishes. Each parish was run by a Catholic priest.

Louisiana was then bought by the US Government. When it came to dividing the territory into administrative districts it made more sense to use the boundaries carved by these parishes than to start from scratch. The nomenclature also stuck. That is why Louisiana has Parishes instead of Counties.

History lesson aside, we are not able to maintain up-to-date listings of all the Parishes contact info. Thankfully the Louisiana Clerks Association lists all 64 Parishes complete with their contact info.

Perform The Wedding Ceremony

Our ministers perform all different types of weddings from formal and traditional ceremonies to laid-back weddings with fun themes, we’ve seen it all. Here at the ULC we always encourage creativity, and applaud unique ceremony ideas. However, as minister, you should be familiar with the basic requirements that all ceremonies must meet.

In order for a marriage to be legally binding, the wedding ceremony itself must include two key elements. The first is the Declaration of Intent this is most commonly recognized as the “Do you take… I do” exchange. The second is the Pronouncement, where you will pronounce the couple officially married. While most weddings will involve additional elements, these segments constitute the bare minimum for a legal ceremony. Make sure you cover them!

Planning the wedding ceremony itself is generally left up to the couple, though you may be asked to provide input or advice. If you are officiating a wedding ceremony for close friends or family, your personal knowledge of the couple will likely mean more involvement in the planning stages. Either way, it is important to communicate with the couple to figure out what type of ceremony they want and which elements they’d like included.

Following the ceremony, youll need to oversee a few final steps to make the marriage official. During this time, many officiants choose to gift the newlyweds a custom marriage certificate to remember the special day. Though not required, its a nice touch that couples always appreciate.
