How Much Should A Bridesmaid Spend On A Wedding Gift

Understanding The Cost Of A Bridesmaid

How Much Should You Spend on a Wedding Gift 2020?

If you ever have the chance to be a bridesmaid then you will understand the meaning when people say that bridesmaids make a financial investment towards a wedding. In case you have never been a bridesmaid or dont have any idea about how much a bridesmaid spent on an average for a wedding then the average cost of between $1200 and $1500 may come as a surprise to you. There are many bridesmaids who had to spend only $100-$500 but there are also examples that show bridesmaids spend $3000. So if you are wondering what makes up these costs then take a look at these areas that your bridesmaid is probably spending money:

Should I Give A Wedding Gift That Matches The Price Per Head

“The formality of the wedding impacts a number of elements, including time of day and dress, but there is no tie into the cost of the gift. What you gift the couple should be exclusively dependent on your relationship to the happy couple, as well as your own means. No guest should feel as though they need to overextend themselves with the gift because they are expected to wear black tie,” says Carlson.

Similarly, just because your BFF had a 10-person wedding in their backyard doesnt mean you should give them an inexpensive gift. Also, if you happen to be attending multiple events for the couple, consider this as well: you can use the 60-20-20 rule, which means spending 20 percent of your total budget on an engagement party gift, 20 percent on a gift for the bridal shower, and 60 percent for the actual wedding gift.

When To Give The Bridesmaids Gifts

Finally, the time comes when the bride gives away the bridesmaids gift. Generally, the bride gives the gifts at the rehearsal dinner party. The bride will give a toast to their bridesmaids and present them their gift one by one. If you are looking for something different and want to spend some alone time with your girls then you can schedule a bridal luncheon. There you can give away the bridesmaids gifts.

What Are Good Bridesmaid Gift Ideas

A general rule of thumb for bridesmaid gift shopping is to make each present as personal as possibleand we’re not just talking about adding monograms. The best bridesmaid gifts are tailored to the recipient, meaning you don’t necessarily need to buy the same thing for everyone. Take the time to pick out something that shows just how well you know your crew. A good example would be a personalized thermos for someone who loves the outdoors or a luxe skincare set for your beauty-guru bestie. If you’re putting together gift baskets, feel free to include a few items that are the same for everyone. Mini bottles of bubbly, cute hair ties, and personalized dress hangers are all great gift ideas that’ll help fill out bags or boxes.

It’s also totally acceptable to buy all of your ‘maids a gift from the same category , but you should still choose something slightly different for each person. A necklace or bracelet featuring their birth flower or stone is going to feel personal no matter what. One last note: Avoid handing over bridesmaid robes or PJs as your main present. While they’ll definitely look cute in getting-ready photos, they’re not necessarily the most thoughtful gift idea. Instead, think of them as fun extras for your crew.

What Are The Expectations In Other Cultures

Expectations of how much money to give vary vastly between different cultures and you’re best to ask someone in the know, e.g. a friend in the wedding party or a relative of the engaged couple.

For example, at Japanese weddings, money is a very common gift. A friend of the couple may give £200 in Yen, while relatives may give three times this amount. The money is put in an envelope called Goshugi-bukuro and your name and the amount is written on the front.

In China, money is almost always given to the couple in red envelopes as a gift. Typically guests work out the amount to give based on how much the wedding meal would have cost, so the fancier the meal and venue, the more money is given.

At Nigerian weddings, it’s tradition for there to be a ‘money dance’ where the couple are sprayed with money as they boogie on down. In addition, guests will fill envelopes with money or a cheque and give it to the couple. The amount you are expected to give really depends on your relationship to the couple, so we’d advise you to ask ahead of time and prepare your gift plus money to spray.

Indian weddings will typically have no wedding registry and a ‘no boxed gifts’ rule – cash or a cheque in an envelope is given instead. In Indian culture, they avoid gift amounts ending in 0 and typically would give £51, for example, as it starts the couple off on accumulating their next £50.

Gift Of Money If You’re A Bridesmaid

Don’t be mean, just asking .. I’m in a couple weddings this year and also have my own in October. I was talking to my friend today telling her all the money I have to spend this year for the weddings I’m in. Shower, Bach party, getting nails, hair, and makeup done and card + money for the actual wedding. My friend said she feels that it’s not expected from the bridal party to give money since they already dished out a ton of money to be a part of their day?? Just wanted to hear thoughts!

What You Should Give Them

Now that you have a general idea of what to spend on your bridesmaids, you can start planning what type of gift to give them. This will definitely require some thought on your end because you want to make sure you give them something thoughtful and special.

The following are great recommendations for gifts all of your bridesmaids will absolutely love.

  • Personalizedjewelry – Nothing will make your girls feel special than getting them engraved jewelry that will make them feel just as special on your wedding day. One great option for personalized jewelry includes engraving their initials on either a necklace, ring, or bracelet. You can also choose to get them necklaces or bracelets with their individual birth flower or even a friendship pendant on it. Whichever engraving you decide to choose, know that giving them a piece of personalized jewelry that is uniquely for them will definitely be cherished.
  • Monogrammeditemsasgifts – Want something to give to your bridesmaids that is literally for them? Try getting them useful or even whimsical items that have their names monogrammed on it. This can include anything from monogrammed luxury throw blankets, cell phone cases, hair ties, you name it! Most things can be monogrammed you just have to find what you think your bridesmaids will like best.

Keep in mind that you will want to give your bridesmaids something that they can use past the day of your nuptials. You want to focus on getting them something they can use for themselves.

What If Its A Destination Wedding

This is the exception to the rule. Single guests might not want to travel alone, and they might be wary of attending an entire extended event if theyre not close with any of the other guests. The polite thing to do is to keep the guest list small enough that you can provide all guests with the option to bring a plus-one. Not everyone will opt to do so, but the choice should be theirs.

Do The Bridesmaids Get The Bride A Gift

It has become a tradition for the bridesmaids to get the bride a gift. It can be a present during her bridal shower or a wedding gift.

You can give bridesmaid gifts on these two separate occasions, but its also acceptable that if the bridesmaid already bought the bride a gift for her shower, she can skip giving a wedding gift. The maid of honor might also talk to the bridesmaids and plan contributions for the bridal shower.

The gift can be the bridal shower itself tailored to the brides likes. And if you are limited on budget, consider asking and collaborating with another bridesmaid to get the bride a gift.

Think About How Close You Are To The Couple

Gifting items that arent included on the registry isnt a violation of wedding gift etiquette. If, however, you choose an off-registry item, make sure its something you know the couple will absolutely love. “A couple has taken the time to select items that they need, so it makes perfect sense the majority of the time to simply fall in line with their wishes. With that being said, if you are close to the couple and are 100 percent sure that your off-registry item fits the bill, then by all means, do it,” says Carlson.
