How much did you spend: $9,000

How did you set your budget for your wedding dress? I had no idea where to start. So, I went to try on dresses to get a feel prior to setting a budget. I casually looked online to see the designer dresses I loved were around $6,000 to $12,000. Before getting engaged, I had no clue.

What was most important in choosing your wedding dress? The dress I chose was the second dress I tried on. It was not the style I thought I would go for, but it just felt right. I tried several other dresses but none that came close to this one. I love it and am so happy with my decision.

How did you stick to your budget? In the age of COVID, I did not set one. For me, I was mostly concerned with finding a dress that I loved that worked for my timeline.

Tips For Your Custom Wedding Dress Journey

Getting to call the shots in every step of the design process sounds like a dream come true, but if you’re on a budget, you might think a custom gown just isn’t an optionand that’s where you’d be surprised.

Ergen-Jennings estimates that depending on style details, fabrication and the designer, a typical custom-made wedding dress can sometimes run between $1,500 and $4,000 . But if you’re thinking of a very simple silhouette, Ergen-Jennings says she’s helped brides achieve a custom look for just $700 to $100.

Accessories With Muslim Wedding Dresses

  • The Holy Quran specifies the wedding dress for a Muslim bride. Putting it broadly, a Muslim bride needs to wear a dress that exposes only her face and hands.
  • Traditionally, the salwar kameez is the top choice among Muslim brides. The dupatta is used to cover the head of the bride. In many cultures, the traditional attire for the Muslim bride is a saree. She uses the pallu to cover her head or a separate scarf. In other cultures, the Muslim wedding dress comprises of a kameez paired with a sharara bottom and a matching dupatta.
  • As per traditions, green is the most auspicious color for the Muslim bride which makes bridal outfits in this color extremely popular.
  • Apart from traditional necklaces, bangles and rings, Muslim brides wear a nose ring on the right side of her face. This is an important part of the Muslim wedding dress. After she is married, she needs to replace this ring with a pin. The nose pin is a must for Muslim married women.
  • Another compulsory accessory in the Muslim wedding attire is a jhoomar. Also known as pasa, this is a fan-shaped piece of jewellery that is attached to the hair of the bride. It hangs from one side of her face on the forehead. Usually she wears it on the left side of her face.

The Embellishments For Subsequent Retelling

Another factor that will impact the wedding dress cost is the amount of embellishments on the gown. Corset fits, beading, and lace are just a few of the many different details that can lead to a more expensive custom gown.

One clever way you can get your dream dress at a lower price is to buy a simple gown then ask a trusted local seamstress to add any embellishments you want. Their costs are guaranteed to be a lot cheaper than the designers.

The Most Stunning Wedding Dresses Brides Wore In 2021

  • Jenna Kaufman and Jesse Silverman had a “minimony” in July 2021.

  • Kaufman wore a Galia Lahav gown with a see-through, corset bodice and a full skirt.

  • She had a custom thigh-high slit added to the wedding dress to make it one of a kind.

Silverman popped the question in May of 2020.

The couple planned for a July 31, 2021, wedding. They hoped to get married at a vineyard near Niagara Falls with 120 of their loved ones around them.

But as their wedding date got closer, the couple realized Canada’s COVID-19 restrictions would prevent them from having the big wedding they had been planning.

With the help of Kaufman’s mother, they decided to postpone their large celebration to 2022 and have a smaller wedding with just 50 of their closest friends and family members on their original wedding date.

“At the end of the day for us, it was less about the party and more about us getting married, celebrating our love together and everything that we’ve been through and everything that we hope to have,” Kaufman told Insider.

Kaufman decided to buy a different wedding dress for the minimony.

For her 2022 wedding, Kaufman bought a fitted Galia Lahav dress that she loved.

But she didn’t feel like it was right for her minimony, as it was picked specifically with a vineyard location in mind. Her mom helped her find a second gown.

She ran into the same issue with this gown.

Why Do I Need Alterations On My Wedding Dress

Lets preface by reminding you that most mainstream wedding dress designers produce their wedding dresses based on a size chart. This size chart is set to a series of measurements that allow the wedding dresses to be mass-produced. As a result, most bridal stores sell brands of dresses that are mass produced in a factory. Each designer or brand operates using their own size chart. For most, it consists of the following measurements: bust, waist, and hips. Please see below actual size charts from two famous bridal designers.

Back to the bride.

The ordering process generally goes a little like this:

  • You say Yes to the Dress
  • Your sales associate takes your measurements
  • Together, you review the size chart to see where each of one of your measurements match up
  • If you are lucky, your three measurements will match up perfectly to one size
  • You will proceed to order your dress in that size.

BUT- truth is, for around 90% us, this simply wont be true. Most brides will have one or more of their measurements falling into one size, while another measurement falls into a completely different size. For example, your bust measurement may put you into a bridal size 10, and your waist measurement may better fit a size 6, while your hips match a size 12, like our founder Dafra.

Bring Up Budget Early And Often

From the very beginning, you and your designer need to be on the same page about price. He or she will be honest about what is and isn’t possible, and can discuss ways to save money with your dream design.

“Many designers are willing to work within a budget if the bride is open to modifications,” Ergen-Jennings says. “Simplifying the silhouette, removing intricate details or inner construction, and using different fabrications will all help to reduce the cost of a gown.”

Splurging On A Me Dress

Elaina Demerau is a 23-year-old brand developer in Richmond, Virginia. She got married on her family ranch on October 10, 2020.

How much did you spend: $2,000

How did you set your budget for your wedding dress? I watched a lot of “Say Yes to the Dress” growing up, and I’ve always saved dresses I liked into scrapbooks and screenshots. I looked at the brands I loved like Justin Alexander, Maggie Sottero, Stella York, and used their average price ranges as a basis for my own wedding budget. My fiancé and I built a wedding budget using CostofWedding.com and then presented it to our parents to ask how much they would like to contribute to our day. My dad purchased my dress, and it was so special to have a first look with him on the wedding day!

What factors went into your budget? I was one of those brides who had been planning their wedding since I was little, so I knew my dress was going to be a splurge item. When we first got engaged, we sat down and compared three of our splurge items, and my dress was my number one for me. I knew I wanted something classic and guessed that I’d want a ballgown, too.
