1 Corinthians 13 Wedding Reading

Wedding Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 48a

How to read 1 Corinthians 13 like a pro

So far, for this Ceremony series, weve focused on non-traditional readings for a change heres a classic, biblical reading one which I used in my wedding as well. Marriage is not easy, especially when youre a very strong-willed person, so I often have to go back to this verse in my head. I think its such a great idea to have readings which you can use long after the wedding!

1 Corinthians 13:48a

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

And Though I Have All Faith So That I Could Remove Mountains And Have Not Charity I Am Nothing

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. If i have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if i have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, i am nothing. 1 though i speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, i am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Wedding Bible Readings: Why 1 Corinthians 13 May Not Be The Best Choice And What You Could Have Instead

Criticising someone’s choice of Bible reading at a wedding is like criticising the bride’s dress or the groom’s haircut. Whatever your private opinion, the rule is: it’s all lovely.

So having 1 Corinthians 13 at a wedding is lovely. Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, etc. Beautiful words for a beautiful day â what could be nicer?

Well, the problem is â and I write this in the same fear and trembling as the chap who had to put his hand into the Wood Beast’s lair in Flash Gordon â the Bible doesn’t really do “nice”. And I worry that Paul’s sublime, God-breathed words in 1 Corinthians have been co-opted and corrupted by a wedding industry that celebrates romantic love, which is all about hormones, at the expense of Christian love, which is all about commitment.

Paul’s “Love is…” list isn’t a statement of the dewy-eyed emotional state in which couples stand in front of the altar. It’s a commitment to a rigorous practice of spiritual discipline in relation to other people in general â and not just to the object of amorous desire.

Yes, it’s lovely. But I’m not sure that attaching it to the wedding service does it justice. So here are some alternatives.

These verses speak of help, companionship and mutual support. A strong marriage armours people against life’s slings and arrows.

The widowed Ruth is talking to her mother-in-law Naomi, but these are wonderful wedding words. In Christian marriage a couple shares everything.

Corinthians Wedding Verse : Love Keeps No Records Of Wrongs

Love Is And Is Not – 1 Corinthians 13 – ALIGNED – Pastor Jason Fritz

Your wedding day is the first day of the rest of your lives together. In that regard, its a clean slate. Use that fact along with 1 Corinthians 13 to remind yourself that keeping score in a marriage is a big no-no. Primarily, doing so negates any efforts toward forgiveness or personal growth. A person cannot make progress if they are constantly reminded of their past regressions.

Love allows every day to be a new one. When the sun sets and clears away the events of the day, so too should love allow for a clean slate upon sunrise.

Corinthians Wedding Verse : Love Protects Trusts Hopes And Perseveres

Even when the aforementioned steps arent easily falling into place or its clear theres work to do to re-instill love in its truest form, there is one bit of Corinthians wedding advice to employ even when you dont like each other, respect the relationship as a separate entity. In other words, even when acts of love are lacking and patience is running thin with your spouse, express love toward the marriage itself.

The latter is an act of protecting the relationship something love also does. Additionally, it is the relationship equivalent of boarding up the windows in preparation for a storm. So, in that way, its perseverance in its purest form. This helps keep hope alive for a brighter day and employs the trust youll need in one another to do the work needed to carry that hope into fruition.

If nothing else, when it comes to your marriage and the Biblical reminders of the importance of love and its true definition, remember that love simply is. As such, let it be.

What The Lector Should Know About The Reading From Saint Paul’s First Letter To The Corinthians Chapter 13

Corinthians 13 wedding reading love poem love quote wall

At a funeral, you’ll have to page through the lectionary to the section titled “Conferralof the Sacrament of Marriage” and find it under those index numbers.

Who wrote this and to whom? Saul, a.k.a. Saint Paul, was the man who persecuted the early Christians until the day God knocked him off his horse. Paul accepted Jesus with all his heart and soul, and became a vigorous missionary .

The Corinthians were Greeks, and their city, Corinth, was a seaport. As Greeks, they were used to vigorous discussions about philosophies and religions. The Greeks gave us Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, and the beginnings of Western democracy. They were not in the habit of taking things for granted. They liked to challenge authority.

Since Corinth was a seaport, there were always a lot a sailors around, and people willing to entertain sailors, for a price. People were boisterous, and manners were a bit crude. They didn’t have the sense of decorum we have about our weddings, funerals, or weekly worship gatherings.

So love is patient and kind, especially when compared to boastful, self-aggrandizing behavior. Love doesn’t make you seek your own advantage, although having the power to heal the sick might tempt you to do so. You might be the kind of speaker that others want to hear, but if you don’t live and speak with the love described here, you’re just a tinny tambourine. That’s what this passage is getting at.
