What To Bring To A Wedding Dress Fitting

Your Mom Or Maid Of Honor

What to expect at a wedding gown fitting

It never hurts to have a second opinion. Your mom or maid of honor can help assess how the dress looks from all angles, and during your final fitting, she can also learn how to bustle your gown following the ceremony. Just remember that no matter what anyone else might suggest, the final decisions about which changes to make are ultimately your own. You are the one getting married, after all!

Who Should I Bring To My Wedding Dress Fittings

It can be tempting to bring your whole bridal party along for a look at the dress but this isnt a good idea most boutiques will advise ideally only one guest, certainly no more than two.

There’s a good reason for this. A fittings appointment should involve plenty of communication with the seamstress without the distraction of well-meaning others.

If you’ll need help getting in and out of your dress, or you’re having a bustle, it’s worth bringing a trusted friend or family member who can learn how to assist you on the day.

For your final fitting, we suggest bringing along your accessories, to give you a sense of the overall look. We’ve seen advice that you should also get your makeup done for your fitting, for an extra confidence boost, but we’ve not so sure about this and would actually advise keeping products to a minimum a foundation streak or mascara splotches on your dress are not conducive to a stress-free fitting.

Versace Collection Wool Plaid Suit

The grey wool plaid suit from Versace Collection has notch collars, long sleeves, buttoned accent at wrists, besom chest patch, zipper with button fastening in pants, and two side pockets.

For a suit that will never go out of style, choose a color like grey, or navy, or a summer neutral like beige or stone for an ideal suit set that will never go out of style. Try a bolder color like cobalt or sage green for something that is just as easy to wear but carries a punch.

What If I Lose Or Gain Weight Before My Wedding

Even if you have your wedding dress a year before your wedding date, most seamstresses don’t recommend having it altered until about three months before the big day. At that point, youre not likely to experience drastic weight fluctuation that will affect the look of your dress. After your first fitting, you should plan for two or three additional appointments: one or two a month before your wedding, and the final fitting/dress pickup about two weeks before your wedding. This gives your seamstress plenty of opportunities to ensure that the dress fits like a glove, even if your weight has changed by a couple of pounds.

Give Yourself Enough Time

When you first step foot into our studio in Auckland, all your bridal anxietiesof appointments, planning and scheduleshas got to leave you at the door. If you come for your fitting thinking about whats on your plate next, youll make it that much harder for yourself to achieve the dress that you want. Shed yourself of negative energies and come to your appointment with a calm and open mind, so that you can be present and ready to consult with our team of professionals.

Your appointment shouldnt take longer than an hour, but sometimes it can even be helpful to clear your schedule for a large chunk of the afternoon. That way, youre not in any rush to take off to the next thing and your headspace can be solely focused on getting your dress exactly how you want it.

In terms of an overall timeline, we advise you to give yourself five or six months between your first appointment and your wedding day. This is the same with most bridal stores as its enough time for them to have fabrics shipped, jobs outsourced, and to add it to the queue of all the hundreds of other dresses theyve got to make.

With Kenny and Harlow, however, our talented team make all our gowns at our Auckland studio. We understand that things happen so if you have less time than you expected, you should still never feel like you have to settle for less! Let us know about your timelines and you may be surprised at what we can achieve for you.

Do: Consider Wearing Shaping Briefs

Wedding dresses fit and flare

Want some of shapewears sculpting power but dont feel like wearing the full bodysuit? A high-waisted shaping brief is a good choice. Its less restrictive and its relatively easy to manage on your own.

Bring this piece along to your appointment, so that you can wear it under any form-fitting or clinging dresses. Satin and silk will fall smoothly over it, giving you that bridal look. You can also remove it, if you decide to try a gown with an open back.

What Should I Expect From A Fitting

The first wedding dress fitting usually lasts about an hour, and this is the time for you to tell your salon or tailor all the fixes and adjustments youd like to have done to your gown. You should make sure that your gown is the one you wanted the correct size, the correct color, the correct style and the correct design. This is also your chance to meet the seamstress that will be working with you for every fitting until the big day, so you want to be sure that she knows what shes doing! Your seamstress will start pinning the gown and tucking the fabric to mold the shape to your body, and take note of areas where fabric should be taken in or let out. As your seamstress is working, you should be able to see how your dress looks and feels in different areas. If anything is unsatisfactory, ask your seamstress to alter it for you. After this initial fitting, every fitting thereafter should be simpler. During each additional fitting, double check to see if all the requests from the previous fitting have been fulfilled. The absolute most crucial thing to take care of during these fittings is your comfort level. If you arent able to move around in your dress comfortably, then it needs to be altered so that you can.

Any Little Details Youll Wear On The Big Day

It is helpful when going on a wedding dress shopping trip to have anything you know you might wear on the big day. If there are any special little details or accessories you plan to wear, be sure to bring them. For instance, if youre planning to wear a tiara or veil that belonged to your mother or grandmother, youll probably want to bring it to try on with various dresses to make sure they coordinate. However, if you dont have any special accessories in mind, just come with an open mind and consider trying on the options available at the bridal salon. Often times the associates will suggest accessories to complement the gowns you try on! Alternatively, feel free to bring some of your own options to try when you are thinking you have found the one.

Speak Up If Your Dress Still Doesnt Feel Right At The Second Fitting

Your seamstress will do everything in her power to make sure your dress fits, but you’re the one wearing it, so speak up if something doesnt feel right. Whether it’s a zipper poking you, a strap falling down, or not enough support in the bust, being vocal will help you avoid having to book more fittings, which will ultimately allow you to stick to your dress timeline.

What If You Want To Shop For Your Wedding Dress Alone

Wedding Dress Fittings 101: What Brides Should Know about Their Alterations

Some brides dont want input from others on their wedding gowns, or they dont have people to bring with them on this adventure. Instead of asking people to shop for a wedding dress with them, these brides choose to go at it alone. Are you considering shopping for a wedding dress by yourself? If so, here are a few tips for you:

  • Plan Ahead: Start looking at inspiration before you go shopping and determine an appropriate budget before stepping foot in a bridal salon. Have a few different ideas for dresses that you would like to try on to give your consultant a starting point for your wedding dress style. However, be sure that you are willing to look at recommendations from your bridal stylist, as she will know what types of dresses will look good on you based on your body type and skin tone.
  • Keep an Open Mind: Staying openminded is going to be critical should you decide to go shopping alone. Since you arent going to have a sounding board as you would with a group, you will want to try on a few different styles of gowns before you narrow it down. We recommend seeing numerous styles and fabrics before you tell your consultant that you only want to look at lace ballgowns or tulle fit and flare gowns.
