What Wedding Invitation Pieces You Really Needputting Your Suite Together
Overwhelmed with the steps of creating your wedding stationery? You’re not alone. A wedding invitation is likely the most complex set of stationery you will ever need. It announces a large event that has multiple parts, which possibly includes several venues or even multiple days. So how do you organize all this information on a few pieces of paper? How do they even fit together?
If the little nuances are driving you crazy, then grab a cup of tea and your wedding binder. This blog talks about the job of the main invitation and explains how each insert card works to layout your wedding details. So let’s dive in!
The main invitation is the largest and most obvious piece of your stationery ensemble. It has four important jobs.
a. Identify the hosts of the wedding. This may be you, one set of parents, both sets of parents, or all of the above.
b. List your names and announce the upcoming wedding. Formal invitations include the couples middle names.
c. Provide the date and time. The numbers are spelled out for formal ceremonies.
d. Give the ceremony venue and address. If your reception will be held at a different location, dont mention the second venue here. Simply add a short phrase like Reception immediately following at the bottom of the invitation.
The main invitation is the only must-have. However, most couples need at least one additional insert card, even for simpler weddings.

What To Include In A Wedding Invitation
Written by Shutterfly Community Last Updated: Mar 11, 2020
The time since your engagement has flown by. Youve figured out how to pick the perfect wedding venue and chose the best date for your big day. Plenty of plans have been made and the upcoming nuptials are starting to feel real. Now its time to send out your wedding invitations and invite your loved ones to the wedding. But whats the right amount of information to include in the envelopes?
Choosing Your Wedding Invitation Size & Shape
There are a couple of key factors to think through when determining what size and shape you want for your wedding invitations:
1. Do you want to include details other than the hosts and attendee information? If youre excited to share out some of your engagement photos and other details about you and your partner, you may want to opt for a four-panel or minibook invitation, which allows you to add supplementary info in addition to the traditional invitation requirements. We have a great article that reviews all the invitation etiquette questions you may have about details to include, the order to include them, and so much more.
2. Who do you want to feature in the host line? As you may know, Minted features designs for many different combinations of hosts and greetings on its wedding invitations , but the more names you want to feature on an invite, the smaller the font will need to be. While not a hard and fast rule, this is something to keep in mind if youre thinking about a petite, square, or all-in-one invitation that has more limited real estate
If you want to include any of these inserts, an all-in-one invitation is not going to suit your needs . Likewise, while we offer these accessories with petite and square cards, they are not sized down, so the impact of unveiling the invitation may be a little less grand, but still beautiful! That being said, these formats are great for a more modern and laid-back feel and will help set the tone for your guests right away.
Wedding Rsvp Deadline Etiquette
Set your RSVP due date for 3-4 weeks prior to the wedding day. This has a few key benefits:
- Setting your RSVP deadline 3-4 weeks from the big day gives you the chance to follow up with anyone who hasnt responded in time.
- You are able to finalize your seating chart when you set the RSVP deadline a few weeks before the wedding day, rather than waiting until the last minute.
- Securing all RSVPs at the deadline allows you to share that information with your caterers, so they can begin to prep for the wedding day.
You want to set your RSVP deadline to be at least a couple weeks in advance of when you actually need that information from your guests. There will inevitably be wedding guests who do not send their RSVPs back in time, and this gives you the time you need to follow up with them after sending the wedding invitations.
Green Wedding Shoes Pro Tip: Make it easy for your guests to complete and send back your RSVP card before the deadline dont forget a stamp and a response envelope when you send your wedding invitations!
Whats Included In A Wedding Invitation Suite
Its important to note that every couples invitation suite may look a little different. Not only does personal style have an effect on the invitation suite, but the events related to your actual wedding will determine whats included, too.
That being said, there are a few key elements that most people traditionally include in their wedding invitation suite. Lets take a look at the basic enclosure cards you can choose from .

Save The Dates Do You Send Or Not
Announcements to save your wedding date are another very important part of your wedding invitation suite. Although not sent together, the save the date will ensure that your guests place your big day on their calendars, so they dont double book. We highly recommend mailing your save the dates out about 9-12 months before the actual wedding date.
Remain cohesive and consistent and match your save the dates to your invitations.
Optional: Schedule Of Events
If you’re planning a weekend of eventsincluding a rehearsal dinner, welcome party, and post-wedding brunchyou’ll want to include a schedule that guests can reference. With that being said, this enclosure should only be included in your invitation suite if all guests will be invited to each event if not, list only what everyone is welcome to attend. A schedule complete with a list of dates, venues, and timing, as well as information on how to RSVP to each event, will help keep everyone organized.

When To Send Destination Wedding Invitations
As we hinted at earlier, the wedding invitation timeline varies a tad for non-local weddings. So when do you send destination wedding invitations?
The general rule of thumb is to give an extra month for destination wedding invites to be sent out. Why? It gives you guests ample time to sort out their travel plans. And if you have guests coming in from an international destination, we recommend adding on some additional time to account for lengthier mailing times.
How long will it take for your wedding invites to travel to your international guests homes? Double that time to account for mailing back an RSVP, and add that time to your wedding invitation timeline.

Additional Cards In A Wedding Invitation Suite
If you have to include a lot of information in your suit, relying on a single card is tough. You can add additional cards in a wedding invitation suite, to include other crucial information about your wedding ceremony. Say, if there are some per-wedding ceremonies, you can assign a separate invitation card for each ceremony to make them noticeable to your guests.
Often there are some ceremonies which the couple wish to confine to their closed ones. Arranging a separate card for each ceremony gives you control over whom you want to invite and whom you are opting to avoid.
