If you want a personalized ceremony, it’s important to spend time getting to know your officiant. Most pros will ask you to fill out a questionnaire so they have a general idea about your relationship. However, if you want to go the extra mile, schedule a meeting or two so your officiant can fully understand the bond you two share.

How To Get A California Marriage License

Licenses are issued by the County Clerk’s office, and will be picked up by the couple. As a minister, you should be aware of the rules regarding marriage licenses in California and its individual counties. For example, if the couple plans to get an Sacramento County marriage license, you should double-check if there are any rules specific to Sacramento County. In the state of California, the license is valid for 90 days.   • a licensed or ordained Christian minister or priest
  • a Jewish rabbi
  • an officer of a religious organization authorized to conduct marriage ceremonies
  • justices/judges/magistrates/associate judges of:
  • federal courts located in Texas
  • the Texas Supreme Court, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, Texas Courts of Appeals
  • Texas district, county, probate, and justice of the peace courts
  • Texas municipal courts

As per the Department of State Health Services’ guide linked above, there is no official registration for persons authorized to conduct a marriage ceremony. If they review the law, and believe they can perform the marriage ceremony, then they can perform the ceremony.

There are a few large organizations that will ordain online. Some of the most common online ministries are American Fellowship Church, Universal Life Church, Universal Ministries and Rose Ministries. Once you find one that suits you, check with your Secretary of State’s office for legitimacy. The American Fellowship Church, for example, is legally registered with the California Secretary of State’s office as a nonprofit religious organization in good standing.

Before the ceremony rehearsal arrives, take time to practice reading through your script. Make notes about where to pause for effect and practice saying words that might get stuck on your tongue.
