In total I spent $167.85 for all the papers, but if we want to break it down to cost-per-invite, heres the tally:

I got 2 pieces of SeaGlass backing out of each sheet so that is .54/2= .27 per piece

I got 2 pieces of Opal middle layer out of each sheet which is.22/2= .11 per piece

I got 3 pieces of IceBlue top layer out of each sheet which is.54/3= .18 per piece

For the reply cards I got 5 pieces per IceBlue sheet which is.54/5=.11 per piece

.27 + .11 + .18 + .11 + .19= .86 PER INVITE for the paper.

How To Print Your Wedding Invitation Envelopes At Home

Weddings are already expensive. Why not save some money by printing your wedding invitation envelopes by yourself at home? Keep reading to see how I did it, and for a free template!

First, let me show off our gorgeous Rimike invitation by Bibi Invitations! With a black die cut enclosure that fits perfectly into our black, white, and gold color scheme, this was the very first invitation that caught my eye, so I was super excited that Jonathan liked it as well! We decided to add gold border paper and an ivory ribbon to brighten up the invitation suite, and encase it in a gold envelope because white envelopes are basic and this is NOT a basic wedding, ok! I actually was worried about the bow but our invitations came pre-tied which was a HUGE time and stress saver.

Where Do I Print The Invitations

Once you have a design , you have to decide where to print your invitation.

Some things to think about are cost, paper type, and location.

  • Printing at Home: I personally suggest not printing at home unless you have a small amount of invitations to print. Invitations printed at home can drain your ink supply in a home printer, and it can become very costly.
  • Printing at Print Shops: If you want a cardstock feel for your invitations, most of my customers prefer KINKOS or Staples or an online printer like VistaPrint. If this is the case, you want to make sure that your digital file is of the correct dimensions in regards to ink bleed and proportions. You will get a professional look, though not without the price, and the locations may not be very convenient. So, choose your time management well when you use these printers.
  • Printing at Walmart and Other Stores: Finally, you can print at places like CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart. I generally send my customers to Walmart. I know their printing personally. This is where I do my printing. I like the matte feel of the prints, the cost is fairly cheap, and it’s convenient and easy to use.

Many couples include RSVP cards in their invitations, but this is an added cost because of the cards and envelopes, especially if you pre-stamp the envelopes. One alternative is setting up a free wedding website where guests can RSVP online. Just say RSVP at www.weddingwebsite.com on your reception card. Alternately, give an RSVP phone number or email address.

Did Your Printer Enable You To Print Right To The Edge Of Your Top Layer

Thankfully, I was able to print to the edge of the pieces on the top layer of the invite. However, printing on a custom-sized paper was a challenge. It took a long time and lots of scrap paper to figure out the perfect printer settings. It was more of a headache than it was worth. I recommend printing your designs on standard letter size, and then getting them cut to size.

Cotton paper, Eggshell invitations, Deckled edges, Duplexed invites, what the what? Wedding invitation papers are confusing. Turns out, a seemingly-simple paper wedding invitation is not actually all that simple. And definitely no two are the same!

Where To Buy Paper For Wedding Invitations

There are a lot of different places to buy quality cardstock, but my favorite is a shop called Paper and More, and its the only place I buy cardstock from.

I am in no way sponsored by them and they arent paying me to write this article. I just love them so much I want to shout it from the rooftops.

That being said, I am enrolled in their affiliate program and if you buy their cardstock using my links I will receive a small kick back. This doesnt cost you anything, its a just a way of keeping this blog running and the DIYs flowing, so thank you!

One of the things I love most about Paper and More is that they stock almost every type of cardstock you can imagine in a ton of different colors and they let you sample the paper without having to buy it in bulk. Not to mention, they have amazingly fast shipping and great customer service to boot.

    Wedding Invitation Paper Thickness

The biggest difference between a cheap wedding invitation feel and a luxury wedding invitation feel is the paper thickness. The thicker the bettergenerally.

Not every home printer can handle over 100# thick paper, so if youre planning to DIY your invitations, then you may have trouble printing. You should still always try to get 100# paper or heavier for your invitations, or use layering to make them feel thicker.

Double-thick papers run around 200-240# and are extra luxurious! This is especially important for letterpress printing or gold foil stamping as the imprint into the paper will be much more obvious on a thicker paper.

With budget in mind, I like to do a main invitation card on double-thick paper, and then the rest of the pieces on single-thick paper. It helps the invitation stand out, and keep costs down.

If youre not in the United States, you may use GSM instead of Pounds to measure your paper weight. So a 100# paper is generally at least 250gsm or heavier. For your wedding invitations, youll want 250gsm or heavier paper thickness.

No matter what, for invitations, you want to use Cover Stock not text weight paper. Cover stock basically means its made to be the cover of something a text weight piece is like normal printer paper that you might think of. And its NOT going to stand on its own as a wedding invitation card!

First things first: how will you be printing your invites?

The type of printer has a lot to do with the final print quality.

A lot of brides I work with just use their home printers. And because its quick, easy and super affordable, I think home printing is often the best option. But I also recommend talking to a local printer if you want to outsource the printing or step up the quality.

Once you have your paper selected, its time to choose the weight, or thickness.

In the U.S., cardstock is measured in pounds , whereas in Europe cardstock is measured in grams per square metre . While the American system is less unified and uses a different weight for different categories of paper , since were based in the U.S. were going to be talking in terms of American pounds.

Just note that when it comes to paper weights, a sheet of 80# text weight paper is totally different than 80# cardstock paper. This can get confusing when purchasing paper from places like Amazon, so always make sure youre buying cover weight or cardstock paper.

Cardstock weight ranges from 45# to 300# or higher. While it comes in varying weights, the feel of cardstock most closely resembles that of a postcard or business card. Its sturdy and doesnt bend easily, which makes it perfect for wedding stationery.

A good rule of thumb is the higher the weight in pounds, the thicker the cardstock. The thicker the cardstock, the better your invitations will look and feel, especially if youre printing them yourself.

Cardstock weight is a personal choice that depends on budget, preference, and the overall tone you want to set for your wedding. Heres how the different weights stack up.

    A Note About Cutting:

PRO TIP: Be sure to print your designs on your paper BEFORE trimming/cutting. I didnt do this, and feeding the pre-cut papers through my printer was an absolute NIGHTMARE. Take it from me you dont want to do that. I highly suggest printing the designs first and then having them cut or cutting them yourself. Save yourself the agony. Trust me.

I assembled the invitations with a tape runner I purchased at Walmart. You can see the assembly process below. I just centered the layers using my best judgment and attached them with the tape runner.
