We talked with Lois Fritz, owner and operator of The Wedding Shoppe, one of the largest wedding retailers in the Midwest for over 40 years. Fritz shed some light on the European size tradition: Most leaders in the wedding industry have always been, or at least have started off, in Europe, and their wedding dress size charts run smaller than American ones. Even with the companies that are based in America, many of the designers are European, so thats the bridal sizing they still use. So, theyre not just trying to make you feel larger than you are!

Sample sales are popular among brides, but you must keep in mind that you are typically truly purchasing just that a sample: The dress has been tried on by hundreds of brides and could have been torn, stained, or otherwise damaged during the process. My mom made sure it had every crystal, and it did not need to be cleaned or even hemmed, said Sanicki.

There are two reasons why wedding dress sizes are never the same as your regular size. There are two different sizing standards that you should familiarize yourself with ready-wear and wedding-wear. Ready-wear sizing are the clothing sizes that you are familiar with from clothing stores. These are the sizes you would wear every day and are standard across almost all clothing stores. Wedding-wear sizing are the clothing sizes for brides and bridesmaid dresses made by most European-based or European immigrant designers. These sizes are usually small and are equivilent to nearly two sizes up from what were used to.
