What Should You Wear To A Wedding

How To Wear A Skirt To A Wedding

What to Wear to a Wedding As A Guest – DO’s & DON’Ts for Proper Attire Outfit Suggestions For Men

Wearing a skirt to a wedding is appropriate as long as it isn’t too casual. A skirt can be a good option for semi-formal weddings. If you want to wear a skirt, choose one that is an appropriate length and go for something that is stylish and graceful. As a rule of thumb, if you can’t wear it for an evening event, you should not wear it to a wedding. Try avoiding skirts that are:

  • Too revealing
  • Too business-like

Follow The Wedding Dress Code

A wedding is not the occasion to showcase your inner rebel the day is about the couple, not the beating of your maverick heart. If there’s a dress code, follow it – you can always include a subtle, personalised twist. These are the classic wedding dress codes:

You may also see couples putting a 2021 update on wedding dress codes – ‘red carpet Beyoncé’, for example, or ‘Roaring 20s’. If in doubt, ask the couple what they mean.

Feminine Daytime Wedding Attire

For the daytime wedding, think dressy or semi-formal attire. This is the time to wear a nice colorful dress or suit. Wear pumps or dressy flats. If this is for a summer or late spring wedding, you may wear nice sandals but never flip flops, unless it’s an ultra-casual beach wedding. If the wedding is outdoors, don’t forget to bring a shawl, sweater, jacket, or wrap to keep your shoulders warm.

White or black is more acceptable these days but if doing so, then introduce a splash of colour. Never wear these two as block colours. Sometimes the wedding invite will follow an overall theme and if this is a colour then best avoid it, as it could match that worn by the wedding party. says Lucy.

Be Careful Not To Over Accessorize

While it’s nice to find a few pieces of jewelry or other accessories that go with your dress, the best rule of thumb is to keep it simple. Schweitzer suggests avoiding “jewelry that symbolizes your own faith when attending a wedding of another faith or religion.” She went on to add, “Accessories should be a subtle embellishment. Overly large, bright, or colorful accessories can be a distraction from the ceremony.”

Dont Dress As A Bridesmaid

One of our top pieces of advice is to ask the couple what colour their bridesmaids will be wearing ahead of the big day. Sometimes the wedding invite will follow an overall theme and if this is a colour then best to avoid it, as it could match the clothing worn by the wedding party, explains Lucy.

Brands such as Ghost, Whistles and Monsoon all have dedicated bridesmaid ranges, which, while could be worn by a guest, are better to bypass for risk of ending up matching. For the same reason, choose midi dresses over floor-lengths, as most couples favour a full length style for their bridesmaids. If youve fallen in love with a dress thats long, no problem. Enlist the help of a seamstress or dry cleaner to adjust the hemline for you.

Use The Venue As A Guide

7 Things You Should Never Wear to a Wedding

The location of the wedding can also offer some clues as to what you should wear to a wedding. For instance, your outfit for an outdoor wedding at a farm will be different from what you wear to an evening celebration at an upscale ballroom. It’s also important to plan your look around any religious ceremonies included in the wedding. “Be mindful if you’re attending a wedding in a religious facility,” Durham warns. “Be sure that your shoulders are covered and remove any hats.”

The venue can also indicate what kind of shoes you should wear too. “If you’re outside, opt for a chunky heel for walking purposes and a strappy top if it’ll be hot,” Durham adds. “If you wear a kitten heel or a stiletto, you might risk sinking into the ground. If indoors, you can never go wrong with a pump heel.”

Do some research into the venue before the wedding date so you know what to expect. Looking for photos on the location’s website or social media pages will help you understand what clothes are appropriate to wear to a wedding on their property.

What Is A Wedding

A wedding is a ceremony for two people who vow to join their lives in marriage. Its also a celebration of a couples commitment to one another, their love, and partnership.

There are usually a number of rituals and steps to take before, during, and after the ceremony. Each wedding is tailored to the couple, which makes each ceremony very personal and intimate.

While some parts of a wedding seem very traditional and similar to all weddings, every couple has their own take on what the wedding should be like.

The theme and dress code often go hand-in-hand. Some weddings are very formal, while others simply want guests to feel comfortable. It comes down to the type of wedding.

Consider Classic Indian Garb

For the traditional ceremony, one option for what to wear to an Indian wedding as a guest in traditional Indian clothes. For women, thats usually a colourful saree, which is an elaborately tied drape of fabric that normally covers from the shoulders to the ankles. Extra fabric is normally left free and can be used to cover your head during the religious ceremony. Mens wedding attire is normally a long-sleeved tunic and pants. Both men and womens clothes come in dazzling, highly saturated colours with lots of patterns and prints. If you live in an area with a large Indian-American population, try a local Indian bazaar or market, which will likely also sell clothing. Whatever you do, dont nag the bride or the groom about attire! Trust us, and theyre swamped with other questions, so try to navigate this part on your own.

I Am Getting Married And My Friends Are Pressuring Me To Get A Tan Not Necessary Right

Nonononono, what insanity is this?!

So, back when I was getting married, I remember getting a lot of comments from people saying what a shame it was that I wouldnt be able to wear a traditional white wedding dress, on account of my being so pale. You dont need me to tell you this is absolute nonsense, do you?

Now, as it happens, white, ivory and cream are actually some of my favourite colours to wear. I think they can be really striking with pale skin, and I find that while dark colours can easily drain me, and make me look ill, lighter ones will almost light up my skin and give me a bit of a glow. In the end, I wore an ivory dress to my own wedding and, no, I didnt get a tan, fake or otherwise.

Obviously its a case of each to their own with this I used fake tan on holiday this year, so Im by no means saying you shouldnt do that if you want to. The key words here are if YOU want to, though. If you feel better with a tan, go for it, but if its simply a case of adhering to societys artificial beauty standards then I hope youll feel really comfortable about sticking two fingers up at that and being your pale, beautiful self instead.

Fall Wedding Guest Attire: Shoes

What You Should Wear to a Winter Wedding

Stuck on what shoes to wear to a fall wedding? We get itmaking the right shoe choice can be confusing, regardless of the dress code or time of year. “Metallic-colored, nude, or black heels are a safe bet for any wedding occasion year-round,” says Walsh. She adds that heels, a dress shoe, or flats are expected depending on the formality of the wedding. When it comes to menswear, the guidelines are a little more straightforward. “Unless otherwise specified, freshly polished dress shoes are a must at any wedding,” says Handspiker.

If you plan on wearing heels, think about the wedding venue first. Stilettos won’t be practical for most outdoor locations, especially farm and mountain venues. “Instead, opt for a classic block heel style,” advises Lee. That way, you’ll avoid sinking in the grass. You can also wear boots or open-toe heeled shoes to a fall wedding if that’s more your style. But again, Lee urges to “think about where you’ll be walking.”

“Open versus closed-toe heels are simply a style choice and matter of personal preference,” says Walsh, but they’re generally better suited to indoor events. Boots, on the other hand, “can look incredibly chic with a midi dress whether you choose a pointy-toe or a killer knee-high,” says Lee. But they should be reserved for informal dress codes. If you’re attending a black-tie or semi-formal wedding, “try and stick to a dress heel or flat if possible,” says Walsh.

You Should Defer To The Engaged Couple If You Are Invited To A Themed Wedding

If you are invited to a themed wedding, Sabatino recommends turning to the engaged couple for advice on what to wear.

“If you are going to do that as the host, you need to be specific in what you’re expecting people to wear,” she said.

But as a general rule, Brown recommends against attending in full costume. “You never want to show up to a wedding, even if it’s a theme wedding, feeling like you’re in a costume,” Brown said.

She suggests embracing the theme through accessories rather than a full ensemble.

“I had a bride who wanted to do a country Western rehearsal dinner because she and her fiance had met in Santa Fe,” Brown said. “So we accessorized a very cute dress with white boots, a cowboy hat, and turquoise jewelry.”

Where To Buy Your Wedding Suit

As mentioned above, there isnt a single solution and the best approach depends on both your budget and wedding scenario.

If youre planning ahead, a made-to-measure tailor can be particularly advantageous. Firstly, everyone will wear a suit that fits them perfectly in a style that the groom can choose. Furthermore, although it sounds expensive, there are plenty of made-to-measure retailers that offer excellent value for money.

However, made-to-measure garments require forethought and planning ahead. As a single suit can take about four weeks to produce, you may need to place your order several months in advance given that it may be for a group.

Although it sounds expensive, Indochino offers made-to-measure suits from around $350. You can also get a 10% discount when you spend over $399 by using the code BESPOKEUNIT. Otherwise, Black Lapel has a dedicated wedding service and youll benefit from $50 off your order with FTOBESPOKEUNIT.

Alternatively, you can also consider more affordable ready-to-wear suit outlets instead. Both Hawes & Curtisand Charles Tyrwhitt are Jermyn Street brands yet provide competitive pricing for their suits, shirts, and ties.

Quick Guidelines For Wedding Dress Codes

If the dress code is specified, but youre not sure what that means, weve got a quick guide on the most popular dress codes and some other guidelines to decode what wedding couples are expecting you to wear.

White Tie Dress Code

A white-tie wedding is a very formal event. The couple is expecting you to dress in tuxedos and floor-length gowns. Tuxedos with tails are typical for these extremely upscale weddings with a formal white shirt, white vest, and bow tie. White gloves, formal footwear, and respectful color choices are also expected.

What to wear to a Black Tie Wedding?

While less formal than the white tie, black-tie events also require a floor-length gown for female guests and tuxedos for male guests. Men are expected to have a black bow tie, black vest, or cummerbund, as well as dressy oxford shoes to go with their tuxedo. In some cases, a very formal or sophisticated cocktail dress may work for women at a black-tie event.

Black Tie Optional or Formal Dress Code

The couple wants to let you know that they expect formal wear, but its not as formal as a black tie or white tie. Its more acceptable to wear a formal cocktail dress or stylish suit to these weddings. Even a dressy pantsuit may be appropriate for female guests. Men should expect to wear a formal dark suit, conservative tie, or a tuxedo.
