Fall Wedding Guest Attire: Shoes

WHAT TO WEAR: To a Fall Wedding HOW DO YOU WEAR THAT ...

Stuck on what shoes to wear to a fall wedding? We get itmaking the right shoe choice can be confusing, regardless of the dress code or time of year. “Metallic-colored, nude, or black heels are a safe bet for any wedding occasion year-round,” says Walsh. She adds that heels, a dress shoe, or flats are expected depending on the formality of the wedding. When it comes to menswear, the guidelines are a little more straightforward. “Unless otherwise specified, freshly polished dress shoes are a must at any wedding,” says Handspiker.

If you plan on wearing heels, think about the wedding venue first. Stilettos won’t be practical for most outdoor locations, especially farm and mountain venues. “Instead, opt for a classic block heel style,” advises Lee. That way, you’ll avoid sinking in the grass. You can also wear boots or open-toe heeled shoes to a fall wedding if that’s more your style. But again, Lee urges to “think about where you’ll be walking.”

“Open versus closed-toe heels are simply a style choice and matter of personal preference,” says Walsh, but they’re generally better suited to indoor events. Boots, on the other hand, “can look incredibly chic with a midi dress whether you choose a pointy-toe or a killer knee-high,” says Lee. But they should be reserved for informal dress codes. If you’re attending a black-tie or semi-formal wedding, “try and stick to a dress heel or flat if possible,” says Walsh.

Formal Daytime Fall Wedding: Morning Dress

Any formal event during the day, regardless of the season, requires morning dress. Dont let the name confuse you, morning dress isnt just for mornings. Its for any daytime formal event that occurs before 6 pm or sunset. Morning dress includes:

  • Morning coat in black or grey
  • Striped black or solid grey trousers
  • White, ecru, or light blue French cuff shirt
  • Waistcoat in buff, dove grey, of Robins egg blue
  • Silk necktie or Ascot tie
  • Well-polished black shoes

We admit that morning dress is rare in the United States. Indeed, its much more common to wear a tuxedo to a formal wedding, regardless of its timing. This is part of a larger trend in the U.S. that has blurred the lines between day and night in terms of formality.

Meanwhile, morning dress is more properly adhered to in Britain and the Commonwealth.

If you wear a tuxedo during the day, you are technically dressed formally but also inappropriately if you are somebody who values dress codes. Of course, not everybody shares the same values and its fine if you prefer the ease of a tuxedo over morning dress.

We discuss our opinion of rented clothes on our wedding homepage and we discourage it for a wedding. However, we make a concession for morning dress. Given its rarity, if you decide youd like to wear a morning coat, its unlikely that youll wear one ever again so go ahead and rent one.

What to Wear to a Wedding as a Guest – Men’s Style Tips

Formal dress codes often have rules, which would traditionally limit the use of accessories. However, if youre the bride or groom, remember that its your party and you should do as you please!

A classic accessory is a boutonnière, a floral bouquet thats worn on the lapel. Its typically worn by the groom and a close circle of people including the best man, groomsmen, and fathers of the bride and groom.

Indeed, its both a great way to add a pop of color while also identifying key people at the event. Meanwhile, you can easily pick up an assortment of cheaper synthetic lapel flowers for the same effect or to distribute more freely to guests.

If youre a guest, feel free to throw on a synthetic lapel flower to add a dash of color to your outfit. However, we suggest that you refrain from bringing a boutonnière unless you have been given one or instructed to do so. These may be reserved for the groom and his groomsmen.

Otherwise, cufflinks and pocket squares are all fair game. You can also consider wearing an Albert chain and pocket watch if youre wearing a waistcoat.

Whats A Great Dress For A Casual Fall Wedding

What do you wear to a wedding?

The best dress for you will depend on what youâre most comfortable wearing. The weather might fluctuate, so think warm. Since the ceremony, and possibly the reception are both outside youâll want a dress that you can layer. Donât worry about sleeves as much, as you can always layer with a shawl or a cardigan sweater.

Here are a few dress options to consider:

Youâre looking for a dress thatâs comfortable for sweater weather. For a dress thatâs knee length you can wear stockings or leggings to keep your legs warm for the chillier weather.

  • Add a bit of flare.
  • When you want a dress thatâs reliable and unpretentious, flare dresses keep it casual. 3-quarter sleeve might be the best option considering the likely temps, but again, you might rely on a cozy cardigan to handle the weather.

  • The maxi dress.
  • One of the all-time favorites for a casual wedding is the maxi dress. Itâs ideal for those who want a longer dress that presents a put-togetherness with an edge of excitement too.

Throw on a light jacket and you wonât be bothered by the cold. You can pull tissues from the jacket pockets when the vows really get to you.

A simple way to dress comfy but look chic for weddings is to rely on your accessories and attention to detail, like sequins and beads.

“You can choose to seamlessly add these types of embellishments through fun and flirty statement earrings or a micro handbag,” Glass tells InStyle. “While we love a good clutch, a micro bag with a handle will allow you to enjoy yourself hands-free!”

First Things First: Whats The Barn Wedding Theme

    Brad Matthews

Lets make one thing clear right now: not all barn weddings are created equal.

Some couples can turn a barn venue into a posh, elegant space. Others go for a more boho vibe with a rustic-chic feel. And some go full-on country western.

    The point is this:

Just because its taking place in a barn doesnt mean its a casual affair.

Don’t assume it’s a semi-formal event just because there’s a chicken coop at the wedding venue. Oftentimes, country weddings are just as dressy and formal as traditional ones.If the invite doesn’t specify a dress code, check with the bride or groom to figure out the right wedding attire. When in doubt, wear something that’s easy and breezy, not stuffy and stiff. Leave your favorite satin sheath dress in the closet and opt for something in flowy chiffon instead.

Where To Buy Fall Wedding Suits

If youre the groom or involved in organising the event, its worth knowing that some brands offer discounts and deals for weddings.

As suits are often bought in bulk, these may be quite handy to organise while also keeping costs down.

Indeed, made-to-measure brands like Indochino and Black Lapel offer deals for weddings. Furthermore, you can enjoy a 10% discount from Indochino with our exclusive code BESPOKEUNIT or $25 off your order from Black Lapel with FTOBESPOKEUNIT.

Bear in mind that made-to-measure suits take time to prepare and they may need some alterations afterwards, which are often free with their own in-house services. Therefore, be sure to do this a few months in advance.

Meanwhile, if youre a guest, it might be a great opportunity to invest in a new suit, too. We highly recommend the made-to-measure brands above, especially given that Indochino can retail suits for around $300!

A Black Tie Wedding At A High

DO: Walk the line between black tie and white tie. If the wedding is at, for example, the New York Public Library, its one of the most sophisticated settings a couple can choose, says Hovhannisyan. Yes, its formal, and yes, men need to wear a tux! For womens wedding guest attire, lean toward a floor-length gown – and even consider a train. It doesnt need to be as structured as a gown for a white tie affair, but should still be elegant and regal. It could be an a-line, Grecian, slinky, or poufy design, as long as it touches the floor. Bonus points if your dress has a slit! she adds, And heels are a must.DONT: Go too casual. With such a formal setting, even a cocktail dress isnt quite enough unless the invitation specifically asks for it. Err on the side of fancier for wedding guest outfits, as the bride will definitely be wearing a statement gown to match the setting.
