How To Know What Type Of Wedding Dress Suits You

Making A Bridal Boutique Appointment

Wedding Dress Styles, Shapes & Silhouettes
  • Before you make an appointment, check what dresses a bridal boutique carries and see if they meet the look and style you’re after, while most boutiques have a range of styles, some will carry only classic styles, others vintage and some will be more high-fashion.
  • If you have a certain dress in mind and you’ve found a stockist for the designer, – many boutiques will only keep samples of the most popular styles but they might be able to order it in.
  • If you have special requirements, or are worried about whether a boutique will have samples to fit you, just call ahead and explain your concerns. Bridal boutique staff are so lovely, and they’ll try to meet your needs as much as possible.
  • Check in advance if the shop charges a service fee for trying on dresses – this is quite common, and will often come off the price of your dress if you make a purchase.
  • Organise to go to the appointments on your own, with your Mum or with one or two friends whose opinions you know you can trust. Don’t bring an entourage. You need to be able to hear yourself think, and follow your own instincts about which dress makes you look and feel great.
  • If you have kids, leave them at home , a bridal shop is not a place for children.

You may already know that there are five main female body types hourglass, strawberry, pear, rectangle and diamond body shapes. So lets start with the basics. Heres how to find out your body type.

Mermaid Or Trumpet Wedding Dress

What do you wear underneath if your wedding dress has a mermaid or trumpet silhouette? Since these dresses are mostly fitted throughout, you must wear something that will smoothen your bulges and curves.

Avoid very tight underwear as they can cause bulging and folds. You can also consider a Spanx bodysuit rather than wearing separate undies. This will create a smooth silhouette that can also lessen the bodys volume and accentuate your waist and hips to look better in a mermaid wedding dress.

You also want to wear shapewear that extends from the flare of the mermaid or trumpet wedding dress to avoid having a noticeable space between it and the dress. During the second or third wedding dress fitting, wear the shapewear you intend to use on your wedding day to see how they look together.

Here are our best tips on how to choose a wedding dress for your body type!

Sheath And Slip Wedding Dresses

How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Dress For Your Body Type

Brides who want an effortless look typically choose a sheath wedding gown because of the minimal volume and layering. And a similar silhouette selected for the same reason is the slip wedding dress, which is also fantastic if you want to showcase your figure.

For these wedding gowns, you should wear something hugging your body smoothly. You dont need to consider shapewear, especially if you find it too compressing.

A comfortable alternative is a slip with a built-in bra or support on your chest area. Dont forget to consider the strap style of your dress, so its also possible to wear a separate bra with something that smoothens the underbust area, stomach, and thighs.

Made To Measure Dresses

Made to measure wedding dresses are created from a design in our current bridal collection that are then adjusted according to the brides individual measurements and tastes. As mentioned above, as standard practice we would discuss and agree on a realistic timeframe between selecting a wedding dress and taking measurements. This gives both the bride and us a reasonable, workable timeframe.

Because made-to-measure bridal dresses involve adjusting to an individual brides shape and size, we would ask that brides to aim to reach their desired weight by their measurement appointment. This means that we can keep the pattern and design consistent after this point. However, if a bride needs a little more time or loses weight afterwards without planning to, we can also adjust the dress at the Toile fitting. However, this appointment is the absolute latest point we would recommend to brides aiming for any drastic weight change, as this is when we start to make the dress in silk working from the brides unique measurements. This is approximately 3-5 months before the wedding, as this is the timeframe that we dedicate to the fitting process.
