Specific Rules When Choosing Images

Please note that these rules are not absolutes, and each image will require some level of judgement.

Rule: Do Not Select Duplicate ShotsDescription: Duplicate shots are identical or nearly identical shots. Unique crops, different angles, different lighting, or unique post production styles are NOT considered duplicate styles. If the subjects have COMPLETELY different expressions , then the shots are not duplicates and should be kept. In contrast, if the subjects have SIMILAR expressions , then they ARE considered duplicate shots. Even with different compositions, if the two images are telling the same story of the same moment, then they should be considered duplicates and only one should be chosen.

Here is an example of shots that we would consider duplicates because even though theyre different compositions, they are telling the same story of the same moment.

Rule: Keep Sequenced Shots

Exception: Dont keep too many sequenced shots of unimportant events. For example, we only need a couple shots of the bridesmaids walking down the aisle and each couple entering the reception during the entrance. We dont need an entire sequence of each. In contrast, we want more of the sequence of the bride walking down the aisle or the groom stripping down during the garter toss.

Rule: Do Not Select Unflattering Images of the Subject

Rule: Pick ONE image from each group of formals

Rule: Be More Lenient with VIPs

• Candid portraits taken in a natural environment

The studio portraits found in the big box store photography sections do not require tipping. While the rates are usually low for the actual photo session, these studios make a lot more from you through upselling prints. The employees hired at these locations are also being paid a reasonable wage, making tipping unnecessary.

For more candid family photos, this often takes a little more effort from the photographer. Getting families to interact with each other in an organic way is huge, and it translates into the photos for sure.

In this area, we also do not find tipping to be required in any way, but we could see ourselves tipping someone for those types of photos. After subjecting the photographer to all the dad jokes, you might feel the same.

First of all, what is a first look? A first look is a mini portrait session held right after the bride has finished getting ready, when the groom sees her for the first time. Usually, couples decide to do a first look instead of waiting to see each other for the first time during the ceremony because of the schedule. If there isnt a lot of time between the ceremony and reception for portraits, or if you dont want to miss a single minute of the cocktail hour, its better to do a first look and have portraits taken before the ceremony.

Its nice to choose a picturesque spot in advance for the first look, and possibly recruit some friends or members of the wedding party to help organize it logistically. Just talk to your photographer and he or she will help you with all the details and make sure its one of the most memorable moments of your wedding day.

Is It Important To Have A Shot List For The Portrait Session

If the portrait session is very important to you, a shot list is helpful. If candids are more important to you, a shot list isnt necessary.

It all depends on your taste, style, and personality. For some of our clients, the family and wedding party portraits are very important, and they prefer to keep things as organized as possible. We have a section on our client questionnaire where brides and grooms can give us a detailed shot list, with all the different portrait combinations that they want.

For other clients, the formal portraits are much less important, and they care much more about the candid photographs. Sometimes they dont give us any shot list at all. This is also completely fine Kyo still takes some formal-style portraits , but he keeps them as quick and relaxed as possible.

If there are any personality conflicts in your family , its a good idea to think in advance how you will arrange the portraits and how to swap people in and out of the pictures without making anyone feel uncomfortable.
