How Much Should I Spend On A Wedding Gift

Youre Invited To A Destination Wedding

Hey Jodi, How much should I spend on a wedding gift?

Lets face it, if youre heading to Maui or Cozumel to watch friends or family get hitched, youre already paying a pretty penny to be there. Most newlyweds understand this, so theyre less likely to expect a larger cash gift. Still feeling generous? Rather than carrying an envelope of cash on vacation and risking it being lost or stolen, set up a bank e-transfer before you leave so that the money lands in their account on wedding day.

A destination wedding is not a cheap one, so, much is not expected on the part of gifts. We believe that the best gifts the couple can get are the presence of the guests because they made huge sacrifices. After heavy travel logistics and some cash to get by, gifts are not necessary. But if you feel up to it, go right ahead!

Surprising Statistics On Wedding Day Expenditure

Couples pay a whole lot more for weddings than they do for a down payment on a home. Tell any engaged couple this, and they wouldnt know whether to call off the wedding or go to the AGs office to get hitched.

According to The Knot, in 2017, the average wedding cost $33,000 and some change. Wedding dollars were flying out of the family bank well before the day of the wedding. Venues took the lions share of wedding budgets at around $16,000, and engagement rings came a distant second at $6,000.

Guests, on the other hand, werent too keen on big-ticket items.

When it came to wedding gifts, people werent that exorbitant with the average wedding gift from close friends was $128. For millennials, the average wedding gift amount per couple stood at around $151. So, dont get your hopes up. No ones going to foot the bill for the reception.

Unless you know an eccentric millionaire.

But this is good news for guest couples at weddings. The numbers suggest you dont have to splurge on a wedding gift. There are tons of things you can get your soon-to-be partner for life or a friend whos about to get married that doesnt come with a price tag that looks like GPS coordinates to Antarctica. In fact, you dont have to think along the lines of luxury gifts for men who have everything when budgeting for wedding presents.

Only Spend What You Can Afford

It seems easy enough, but this ones worth mentioning: Limit your investment to what you can afford, even if its less than what etiquette suggests. If you cant find a single item that fits your budget, consider purchasing a few smaller items to total an amount that works for you . The couple wants you to be there to celebrate with them, so prioritize your budget however you need to make that happeneven if that means a smaller gift so you can cover the cost of the hotel room.

How Close Are You To These People Really

How much should I spend on a wedding gift?

If you want to know how much to spend, one of the first factors to consider is how close are you to the couple getting married? Is one of the people getting married an immediate family member or a friend that you only talk with a couple times a year these days? Are you in the wedding? The bar is a bit higher if you are the maid of honor or the best man than if you are just a regular wedding guest.

Relationship To The Bride And Groom

The Knot also tallied the average amount guests spend on wedding gifts. In 2019, the average guest forked over $120 per giftbut the amount ranges widely depending on the gift givers relationship to the bride and groom. Distant friends of the happy couple spent closer to the $80 mark, while wedding party members averaged $115 per gift. Close friends and family invested the most, spending about $130 per wedding gift.2

That range makes senseafter all, when youre deciding how much to spend on a wedding gift, youd probably get a bigger gift for your sister than you would for a high school classmate. But remember what I saidnever let someone elses spending habits drive your decision making. Let your budget and your relationship guide your choices.

Roll With Your Budget

Ultimately, wedding gift spending comes down to your budget, which will grow and shrink from year to year depending, among many other things, on how many weddings youre attending.

People have to give what theyre comfortable with and not be made ashamed of what they can afford, says Andrews. The gift giver should not be going into debt just because theyre attending a wedding.

An Immediate Family Member Or Close Friend: 50

If itâs your brother or sister tying the knot, youâll probably want to go the extra mile to show them you care. Itâs typical to spend up to £100 on wedding gifts for close family members however, this is just a guide.

Your close family members will likely be aware of what youâre able to afford, so donât spend beyond what youâre comfortable with. After all, youâve probably already shelled out for hen dos or stag dos by this point!

If £100 is a little too much, a nice restaurant or hotel voucher to put towards the total cost could be a thoughtful idea.

Is It Ok To Buy Gifts That Arent On The Wedding Registry

Gifting items that arent included on the registry isnt a violation of wedding gift etiquette. If, however, you choose an off-registry item, make sure its something you know the couple will absolutely love. “A couple has taken the time to select items that they need, so it makes perfect sense the majority of the time to simply fall in line with their wishes. With that being said, if you are close to the couple and are 100 percent sure that your off-registry item fits the bill, then by all means, do it,” says Carlson.

Theres No Right Amount It Depends On Lots Of Things

I think it really has to depend on your relationship with the couple. For most weddings of friends weve spent around £50 on a small gift or honeymoon contribution. Some may feel this is stingy but these are all couples who live together and have explicitly stated on their invites that they were not expecting gifts.

We have several weddings next year where we will be spending more as they are close family members. Its a personal choice and it really depends on what your friends and family members are like. I would feel incredibly awkward to receive an overly generous gift.

I think wedding-gift etiquette is unrecognisable now from what it was 30 or so years ago due to the massive increase in the cost and extravagance of weddings. Plus the fact that people tend to live together before they wed.

Im getting married next year and my fiancé and I are having a really difficult time deciding what to do regarding gifts. Weve lived together for several years and bought our first house last summer so there really isnt anything we need.

I suspect we will set up a gift list but make it very clear to our guests that they are under no obligation to purchase anything. The one thing we absolutely will be doing is thanking all of our guests for their attendance at the wedding, with a personal thank-you note, whether they give a gift or not.

How Late Can I Give A Wedding Gift

Some will say that you have up to a year to purchase a wedding gift, but best practice is to always buy and send gifts before the wedding day or within 3 months of the nuptials. Any longer and youre likely to forget. Plus, its more convenient for the couple to manage receiving gifts sooner rather than later.

Consider How Much You’re Spending To Attend The Wedding

As you figure out how much money to spend on a wedding gift, you’ll want to determine how much money you’ll be spending to attend the wedding.

If the wedding is local, you may feel more comfortable putting more money toward a gift than if you’re paying for airfare and a hotel to show up at a destination wedding in a place like Hawaii or Jamaica. It’s likely the couple will understand if you trimmed the gift budget because you forked over thousands of dollars to be at their ceremony.
