We said it before but it bears repeating In California, wedding officiants are not required to register with any government office. The government in California does not impose any officiant registration process whatsoever. At no point in your journey from getting ordained to officiating the wedding ceremony are you required to complete government paperwork confirming your status as a wedding officiant. Once you are an online ordained minister you instantly have the legal ability to perform marriage anywhere in California.
Though there is no legal requirement to prove your standing as an Ordained Minister with any California government office, we do recommend that you keep personal records of your official Ministry Credentials. A physical copy of your Ordination Certification is useful to have in the event that the couple or anyone else affiliated with the wedding asks to see proof of your ordination.

Massachusetts Residents Officiant Application
The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth spells out the Procedure to Perform Marriages in Massachusetts By Members of the Clergy Living in Massachusetts. In short, you will need to submit the following documents:
- Your Ordination Certificate
- Your Completed Massachusetts Resident Clergy Form
Gathering Your Required Documents
You should be able to obtain your Ordination Certificate and Letter of Good Standing through the Church that ordained you. Just make sure that the Letter of Good Standing bears a live signature, as that is required by the Secretary of State
If you were ordained with American Marriage Ministries, their Minister Ordination Package contains all the required paperwork. It is $48 and also includes a Minister Manual that contains useful minister registration and wedding training information.

CA Family Code Section 401 allows the Commissioner of Civil Marriages in the County to appoint deputy marriage commissioners to solemnize marriages in California. In San Francisco County, Deputization will be granted on a San Francisco County issued marriage license only. A photocopy of the marriage license must be presented at time of deputization. Marriage ceremony must be performed in California.
Person must be at least 18 years oldPerson is not required to be a California resident.Person must be fluent in the English language.Person will be required to take the oath of office swearing/affirming to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California.Person must appear in person in the Office of the County Clerk with valid legal photo identification.Deputization service is offered on a walk-in basis Monday-Thursday, 8:00am-11:30am and 2:00pm-3:30pm only.Religious wording and references are not allowed during the ceremony.Fee is $120.00 payable to SF County Clerk.Process takes approximately 30 minutes.The Office of the County Clerk has the right to refuse deputization of a person, if the person is unable to complete the paperwork correctly and/or fails to meet the above requirements. Find Out How You Can Get Legal To Officiate Weddings
Depending on where you live, if may be easy or difficult. If youre a minister or a judiciary, chances are youre already qualified. If youre not, you have some hoops to jump through with your local government. Some folks go the Universal Life Church route. If thats recognized where you live, go for it. For others, ULC is not recognized by their judiciary so they do something like join a humanist organization. Or they register for a course at a ceremony institute which might be recognized by their local marriage registrar.
You might do what I did: go to seminary for a 3-year graduate degree and spend half a year becoming a licensed minister with clergy status. But thats a lot of time and effort just to officiate weddings. To be honest I kind of stumbled into this. I never thought Id love it so much. I started out doing theology as my vocation and weddings on the side. Now I do weddings as my vocation and theology on the side!
So whichever route you decide to take, dont guess that it will be good enough with your local government.
