What Should You Ask For On Your Wedding Registry

Wedding Website Faqs For A Destination Wedding

things you NEED on your wedding registry

If youre planning a destination wedding, youll want to include a few additional questions on your wedding website to help guests prepare for their trip. Remember, your guests are essentially organising a mini-holiday, so there will be some extra planning required on their part.

As well as the questions outlined above, help your loved ones make the most out of their trip by including these additional FAQs:

Break It Down Into Specific Items

One of the great things about a honeymoon fund is that you can break it down into specific items and experiences to make your guests’ gifting experience a little more personal. From a couple’s massage to upgraded plane tickets to a cooking class all about local cuisine, it gives a fun insight into the adventure you have planned and helps your guests feel like they’re buying you something specific instead of just writing a check.

Have The Dreaded Wedding Budget Conversation

Now that youve imagined every dream scenario, reality unfortunately sets in. At this point you and your partner need to have an honest conversation about how much you want to spend on your wedding, including any possible contributions from family members, as noted above.

The average cost of a wedding guest when you factor in food, drinks, rentals, wedding invitations, etc. can range from $200-$500+, and averages $300 in the U.S. according to our recent survey of over 700 couples. While the number of guests you invite will directly impact your budget, you dont have to max out your guest list just because you can. A $30,000 wedding budget with 80 guests will look a lot different than one with 160, and will allow you more flexibility in terms of your venue, catering, and even the vendors you are able to hire.

How Many Gifts To Register For

Finding the magic number comes down to a simple math equation: Multiply your guest list by two, and then add a few extras. Guests prefer to have plenty of options when it comes to shopping your registry. Having at least two gifts per guest will give them the ability to find a product they feel great about purchasing. When creating your wedding registry, it’s best to include gifts that range in prices from $50 to $200 or more. Doing so will allow your loved ones to find a present that fits within their budget or they can gather together for a group gifting option. It’s also recommended to continually add gifts to your registry leading up to your big day. Since products of all price ranges will be purchased before your wedding, keeping your wish list updated will help your loved ones find gifts that fit their budget and are still in stock.

If that number feels high, don’t stress. In 2020, the average value of a wedding registry was $4,134. While this number varies based on the size of your wedding, it serves as a general guideline to keep your registry choices on the right track. For reference, the average guest spend on a wedding gift is $120. Again, this number is a median, meaning it’s important to register for gifts at a variety of price points. In fact, our study indicates that the average value of a registry is down $1,000 since 2013. This can be attributed to a variety of factors, though the most likely is the rise in cash gifts.

Assess Your Needs And Wants

Are you a young couple whos never had your own place before? Are you digital nomads that work from home? Are you wanting to get funding for your honeymoon more than traditional gifts? How Should You Share Your Registry Information

Integrate your wedding registry into your wedding website, and share the link to your wedding website on all formal communication about your weddings such as save-the-dates and wedding invitation , says Skurnik. There is no need to share the link to your registry specifically.

When it comes to blasting out your registry on social media, different cultures have different takes. Some feel fine sharing at large, especially if it is customary in their community to celebrate marriages even when they wont be attending the wedding, while others feel its inappropriate to share if not all followers will be invited to the wedding events. Go with your gut on this one, or take a cue from what close friends or family with similar guest lists have done in the past.

  • How Many Invites Should Your Parents Get

This can get a little tricky, especially if a certain set of parents are contributing more financially, or not at all. A general rule of thumb is that the guest list is split between the couple and both sets of parents. So if your guest list is 100 people, you and your partner would invite 50 people, and each set of parents would get to invite 25.

If your parents are not contributing financially and insist on inviting way more than you can afford, its best to set aside time to talk about what their expectations are, as well as your budget and venue capacities. You can politely remind them that each guest can cost $200+ all in, and let the conversation unfold from there. They might want to contribute more to accommodate their guest list, or the conversation might end there. No matter what you decide, just make sure the tone of the conversation is open, honest, and respectful. Everyone is new to this wedding planning thing, and it can take some gentle reminders from time to time!

Dont Use Your Wedding Registry As An Excuse To Get Expensive Stuff

Whether youre having a destination wedding or a small, intimate affair at your favorite local restaurant, your friends are probably already forking over cash to attend your wedding. Not only that, they may be spending a lot of money on other peoples weddings. People fly in, buy beautiful clothing to wear, pay for parking, attend bachelor and bachelorette parties. Being a wedding guest is expensive.

Ask yourself if the things that you’re registering are just too expensive for your friends and family to buy for you.

Keeping the budgets of your friends and family in mind when creating a registry is really important, said Bodge.

Your mom and dad may be happy to spend big on pricier gifts and heck, let them! But give your friends a break and give them a chance to buy you a few useful things without racking up debt on their credit cards.

Registering for items across a broad range of prices will allow those with tighter budgets to feel like they can participate, while also offering options for those who want to spoil you, said Bodge.
