What Do You Put On A Wedding Invitation

What Else Should I Include In The Invites

How to Assemble Your Wedding Invitations

The Reception

Apart from the key wedding information on your invites, you may consider also adding:

Followed by a Reception..

to let your guests know what is happening after the ceremony. With some more modern, less traditional weddings, its not necessarily a given that guests invited to the ceremony will also be invited to a sit-down meal afterwards. Some couples choose to have their wedding ceremony and then reconvene with their guests late afternoon or in the evening, so if you are choosing to have a more traditional ceremony followed by a reception its best to make this clear by stating it in your daytime wedding invites.

If your ceremony and reception are at different venues then put your ceremony details first with the date and start time and then underneath put:

Followed by a Reception at

If your ceremony or reception is at a location that many of your guests wont be familiar with, then it would be advisable to include the address and postcode so guests can use satnavs or smartphones to find it on the day. Alternatively, you could include some written directions on a separate info card.

Outdoor Venues

So simply putting:

Followed by a marquee reception in the meadow

on your wedding invitations will give guests a good indication of what to expect. To emphasise the outdoor nature of the day, you may wish to add something to bring their attention to the fact such as:

Dress accordingly

Dress Code

What To Include In Your Wedding Invitation

The wedding invitation sets the theme for your wedding. When guests see a rustic invitation with informal wording, it lets them know that the event will be casual. When they see a classic wedding invitation with traditional wording, they will expect a formal event. Like your wedding, invitations can be as simple or as grandiose as you want as long as they accomplish the following jobs:

  • Tell guests the critical information about the wedding: who is getting married, the wedding date, and the wedding location.
  • Recognize the hosts of the wedding.
  • Convey the tone and formality of the wedding, including the dress code.
  • Indicate how guests should RSVP, if no response or other enclosure cards are included.
  • Recognize the couples parents, if they are not also the hosts.

If you are writing your own invitations from scratch, follow these requirements line-by-line as you fill out this piece of your wedding stationery. Each section outlines what information should appear, and in what order, on a traditional wedding invite. Once you understand the various components of invitation wording, feel free to get creative with your own personal touches and style, using the language that feels right for you and your partner.

The Dos And Donts Of Times

  • DO spell out time for formal invitations, and write it as the placement of hands on a clock:
  • half past four
  • DO refer to 12:00pm as noon.
  • DO spell out the time of day rather than using a.m. or p.m.

  • in the morning: all hours before 11:00 a.m.

  • in the afternoon: hours from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • in the evening: all hours after 5:00 p.m.

    • DONT use a.m. or p.m.indicate the time of day using in the morning or in the evening .
    • DONT write twelve oclock.
    • DONT write four thirty when spelling out the time.

Should I Use An Inner Envelope

More traditional and formal invitations tend to use an inner and outer envelope. On the inner envelope, youd write the name of the person or persons invited, such as Ms. Keats and guest. More modern invitationsor couples looking for something more streamlinedoften forgo the inner envelope , an inner envelope still seems to be a must). In most cases, it really depends on what you and your family prefer. Our rectangular Bella envelopes, which we custom made just for us, have beautifully snug inner and outer envelopes.

If lining your envelopes, we do recommend using an inner and outer envelope combination. If you only use an outer envelope, and that envelope is lined, guests will tend to tear that envelope open and miss the perfect burst of color that an envelope lining gives a set.

The letter M is intended to be helpful although in practice we must admit its rather confusing.

The letter M is simply the beginning of the persons title Mr., Miss, Mrs. and Ms. which would then be followed by the persons name.

Lots of wedding response cards have replaced the M with less traditional Name or a simple blank line:

Writing The Number Of Attendees On The Rsvp Card

If the response card does not include food choices, your job is pretty easy. You will simply state the number of people attending or not attending.

But lets say two people from your home are invited and only one can attend the wedding. The guest that is accepting would fill in the blank line with their title as well as their first and last name. Then, place a 1 next to accepts and a 1 next to declines. Always use a number rather than an x to indicate accepts and declines.

And remember, you can also write a note on the backside of the RSVP card for clarity. Theres nothing more fun than receiving little personalized notes back from wedding guests.

And Finallysend Your Rsvp Back On Time

Wedding attendees should reply in time for the couple to receive the RSVP card back by the requested due date.

But our best advice is to reply as soon as possible after receiving the wedding invitations. If you respond that you will be attending the wedding and then later find out you wont be able to make it, call the couple as soon as possible to let them know.

Remember – as the wedding date gets closer, couples are often creating what can be a very complicated seating plan and confirming head count with vendors. Give them as much time as possible to adjust it as necessary.

Insert Cards And Additional Information For Your Wedding Guests

When designing your wedding invitations, you will need to think about what information your guests need. A basic package for a wedding invitation suite would include 4 pieces: your wedding invitation card, RSVP card, RSVP envelope and main envelope. However, if you want to add a custom map, details card, or registry information, each piece will add money to your overall cost per set. Do You Put Rsvp On Wedding Invitations

Your wedding day can be as traditional or as offbeat as you want, but when it comes to your invitations and RSVP cards, you do need to follow a few rules. Not only do your guests need to know important information about your wedding, but you also need to get an accurate guest count to proceed with the menu, seating chart, place cards and other planning details too.

Invitations should be sent out to six to eight weeks before your wedding. This should be enough time for your guests to clear their calendars and make the necessary travel arrangements. If you’re having a destination wedding, send your invitations out three months before the event to give your guests extra time to plan.

Most people are unaware of proper RSVP etiquette, says wedding planner Tessa Brand, of Tessa Lyn Events, which is why she’s so passionate about the subject. Proper RSVP etiquette followed by the host as well as the guests helps finalize the guest list and ensures a smooth wedding planning process.

Rustic wedding response card. Wedding response card etiquette matters. When sent out and received on time, a wedding RSVP card helps couples create the final guest list and sometimes even helps finalize the catering for the reception.

With Tessa’s advice, this etiquette guide gives the final word on wedding RSVP wording, when to send wedding RSVP cards, what to include in them, what not to include in them, how to address them, and what to do when guests forget to RSVP.

    Provide Alternate Ways To Rsvp

Some etiquette experts say that weddings are too important to use online RSVPs, but it’s now the 21st century. If it allows more people the ability to respond, so be it. You can use a wedding website, an email address, or even a telephone number for texts and audio messages for an informal wedding. Of course, you won’t have the extreme joy of receiving the RSVPs in the mail . But, you might get just as loving notes by emails or online forms.

Send Your Invitations Eight Weeks Before The Wedding

Etiquette says that invitations should be sent eight weeks before the wedding. That gives four to five weeks to respond so that you can make your RSVP date three to four weeks before the wedding. The timing is crucialif you give guests more time than that, it’s likely the invitation will get put aside in the “things to deal with later” pile. If it doesn’t seem urgent that they RSVP, they won’t. But less time than that won’t give you time to track down the delinquent guests, or time to give a final number to your caterer by their deadline.
