What About Engagement Rings
Now what about engagement? What about the diamond? Betrothal has its roots in the Bible. Mary and Joseph were betrothed. There are things about betrothal in the Bible, but no biblical mandate for any period of betrothal in the Bible and no biblical mandate for anything that requires engagement, let alone any symbol of engagement.
But, again, I would say it seems wise. This tradition seems wise. It is a season when neither the man nor the woman relates to other men and women in ways that could be construed as romantic or tending toward that kind of relationship. It is a focused season of upper-level commitment that hasnt reached the commitment of the vows of marriage yet. And that kind of staged, or staggered, or leveled relationship or commitment while you focus on knowing one another and discerning each others natures seems to me to be a good and wise thing.
My ring is a true statement that helps me navigate the cultural waters in wise and faithful ways.

Who Gets The Wedding Ring After Divorce
A wedding ring has a certain place in the law based on centuries of cultural practices. When a wedding is called off before marriage has occurred, certain states require that the engagement ring is returned to the original purchaser.
However, in California, Texas, and Washington, the ring is seen as an implied conditional gift, and the person who is left at the altar can choose to keep the ring in exchange for their troubles. In Montana, the legal system views wedding rings as an unconditional gift, meaning “not subject to any conditions.” Basically, before a couple is actually married, the legality around who gets to keep the ring is largely dictated by what state you live in.
After you get married, the law is fairly clear. Cohen explains that wedding rings are viewed as an inchoate, or anticipatory, gift to an intended bride or groom. Until the wedding, it remains the property of the donor, says Cohen. Once married the gift is earned and non-refundable. In a divorce, usually seen as in the divorce since it was given as a gift.”
There are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking, each partner gets to keep their respective rings.
While it might seem like a relief that the ring is the one material possession you wont be arguing over in court, the real question is what you do with the ring once the papers are signed.
How Do I Get To Know My Diamond
Perhaps a grandparent gave you their antique diamond a few years ago, and you dont know too much about it. Maybe its been in your family for generations, and you havent taken the time to learn more about its history. Even if you purchased it for someone in the past, you might not be aware of its actual worth.
All you have to do is visit a gemologist who can perform a diamond authentication test. This test accurately determines the diamonds worth, its origins, and its authenticity.
Most importantly, in visiting a gemologist, youll be able to learn about the diamonds grade. The grade of a diamond dramatically affects its selling price.
Before you even start looking for buyers, however, you should learn the four Cs of diamonds.

Make Sure You Are Ready
Finally, remember that your engagement is different from another piece of jewelry or any other item of value. It is steeped in emotion it symbolizes commitment and love and hope for the future. Do not rush to sell your ring. Make sure you are ready to part with it, and that you won’t feel regret once it is gone.
Redesign Your Ring Redesign Your Life
Some people opt to use the diamonds and metal from an engagement ring and have new jewelry pieces designed and manufactured out of their engagement jewelry.Again, unless done extremely carefully your original diamond engagement rings can lose a significant percentage of value in a redesign. If youre going to go this route, make sure you work with a trustworthy jeweler, there are many horror stories about diamonds being swopped out for lesser value stones and women ending up with pieces that are for all intents, worthless.

Not Just Our Secret Test
I should mention here that at some point we have given all three of these companies an opportunity to work with our readers . The number of satisfied sellers who worked with Abe Mor was exponentially higher than it was for Worthy or White Pine. The difference was so pronounced that we dont bother recommending either Worthy or White Pine anymore.
As this article hammers home, many people are in for a rude awakening when they try to sell their diamond. As this test showed, the offers we received were 78%, 73% and 59% BELOW what we paid for.
Please keep in mind that this test was done with a Tiffany & Co ring. Tiffany has an incredibly high markup for their rings. A ring like that in white gold from Blue Nile would cost about $1,350. A diamond ring like that would get you a better return. For example, Abe Mor said they would buy that one for about $800. That would mean a net loss of only 39%.
Does Homeowners Insurance Cover The Loss Of A Wedding Ring
Your homeowners insurance policy may cover the loss of a wedding ring. But keep in mind that they may be limited as to how much they’ll pay you compared to the actual value of the ring. Some companies allow you to purchase a rider that can give you additional coverage that’s specific to your ring. If this doesn’t work, you can shop around for a separate policy.
Common Mistakes Jewelry Sellers Can Make
Safeguards are critical when selling jewelry to the public. First NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, and NEVER meet an unknown buyer in your house. Personal safety and protection against robbery should be your first priority. If you dont have a way to meet the potential buyer at a public place, then do not sell your jewelry to the general public. Meet the buyer in a public place like a restaurant or shopping mall. I suggest the buyers bank, because if they wish to buy the jewelry they can go and get the cash now and finish the transaction. In addition the bank should have some security if something goes bad.
Fraud should be next on your mind. Cash is the best transaction, checks of all kinds can be faked. Also be aware of switching of jewelry con-men are on the look out for unsuspecting people.
Some other safeguards and precautions are worth taking. First, notify someone of the time and place of your meeting. You can even tell them that you will call after the meeting just to check in. It is helpful to have a mobile phone. It is also a good idea to go with someone else. I have met people with another person standing in the background just watching. Sometimes con-men work in teams and someone looking at the whole situation can see that it is a bad situation in time to help you not get taken.
How To Authenticate Diamonds
There are several ways to authenticate your diamonds at home before getting them professionally appraised. The most non-invasive methods are:
– The Fog Test: Breathe directly onto the diamond as you would a mirror. Real diamonds disperse heat. Therefore, if your diamond fogs, it may be a counterfeit.
-The Water Test: Place your diamond in a cup of water. Due to their molecular density, diamonds usually sink. If your diamond floats, it is probably counterfeit or is only diamond plated.
Even if your diamond passes these tests, it is still best to get your diamond professionally appraised for an experts opinion.

When Should I Sell My Wedding Ring
There is no right or wrong time to sell a wedding ring after a divorce. The most important thing is that you are ready. Dont let friends or family push you into selling your engagement ring if youre still on the fence, or if emotionally youre just not prepared.
We have met clients that have chosen to keep the ring for a few years until they come across it when cleaning and realize that it is just collecting dust. Usually by that point the emotions associated with it have dissolved to a point where they are comfortable with selling.
Oftentimes, divorce comes along with fees and debt, in which case selling the ring right away can help alleviate that debt. However, dont feel pressured to rush and sell your engagement ring to the very first buyer who makes an offer, especially if you want to get the most money you can.
If debt is not a concern but want to sell your ring quickly and be done with it, then you should still collect multiple offers before deciding to sell. There is no reason why you shouldnt get top dollar for your old wedding ring.
Move It To Your Right Hand
It is a common practice for those who have been widowed to move their wedding ring to their right hand. You might see moving your ring as a “baby step” toward not wearing it. For some people, this is a small step toward “letting go” of the past .
Moving your ring allows you to keep holding on to the person you love, but indicates your current unmarried status. Some people will move their ring to the right hand temporarily, while others will choose to keep it there indefinitely.
For people who remarry, it is typical to completely remove a right-handed wedding ring. Not doing so could prove to be a source of conflict with a new spouse. It is uncommon for people to continue to wear their old wedding rings once they are remarried. But that is a very personal choice and everyone will come to a different decision.
Tip: Moving your wedding ring to your right hand is a universal sign that you are a widow or widower. But it indicates that you may be interested in dating.
Be aware of this as you are deciding what to do with your ring. You may be approached by people who are interested in dating you. That can be difficult to navigate, especially if you are still grieving.
