And while there are many ways to save on the venue, the dress, the flowers, and the favors, its not as easy to get a better price on photography. While you might be able to knock off a few hours of shooting time to get a lower price, or choose to make an album yourself, additional discounts are simply cutting into your photographers income and output for you.
One way to justify the high cost of the best photographer you can afford: its still a fairly small fraction of what youll spend on your wedding. Measuring the value of a wedding photograph is tough. The wedding photos will decorate the walls of the familys house for decades. Their emotional value is priceless.
But you need to charge your clients somehow. To guide your decisions, estimate how much time youll invest in each wedding.
Yes, youll spend several hours actually photographing the wedding. But many new photographers dont realise how much more time is involved than just that actual wedding day. If you charge $1,000, youre not earning $1,000 in a single day.
When estimating the amount of work, in addition to the hours spent shooting, dont forget to include:
- Meeting with the bride and groom before the wedding
- Creating and filing contracts and other paperwork
- Shooting engagement photos, if included in the price
- Travelling to the location
- Editing images
- Creating any deliverables such as prints or digital copies along with album design.
Wedding photography doesnt end up being a single days work once you put everything together. The answer varies a bit from photographer to photographer. For me, a full wedding package is closer to 30-40 hours of work than the 10 spent on the actual wedding day.
What If Im Asked About Negotiating My Fees
While you should never sell yourself short, some compromises can create a win-win situation for you and your clients. But you have to go about it the right way.
For instance, lets say you are a commercial photographer working on an agreement with a client and your total costs come out to $3,500. The client lets you know this is $500 over their budget but they want to work with you to come up with a solution for you both.
First off, dont automatically lower your price to $3,000 without changing the contract. This conveys that you were trying to overcharge them before, and reflects poorly on the professional industry. If you arrived at $3,500 as a fair price for you and your work, you shouldnt lower it without adjusting your terms.
Look for other ways in which you could provide them with what they need and still fit their budget. If they initially wanted copyright claims to images, see if they can live with an alternate license. If they requested 10 images, see if they can do with 8. Working with them in this way shows that youre flexible and willing to compromise in a way that still maintains your value as a professional.

To ensure there are no technical glitches on your wedding day, the cost of our basic equipment can often exceed £10,000. I always ensure I have more than one camera body with me so should one have a technical failure I can rely on the other one to carry on and your day will not be ruined. Student photographers or super cheap ones offering their services for £350 might not have invested in any decent backup equipment or lenses and not have any relevant experience whatsoever.

$100 $500. Their rates for portrait photography also depend on several different factors. In general, more time , locations, outfits, and print options included, the more expensive the overall price will be.
Local Website & Business Photography
$50 $250 per image. If were talking about local businesses, the price for image use on their website or print materials will be a lot less than a large company. Again, looking at the number of eyes that will see your image should give you an idea of what to charge. For instance, if your image is placed prominently and the website gets a lot of traffic, you would charge a higher rate than for an image in a small print ad.
Commercial Photography
$100 $500 per image. The prices here vary depending on usage and production costs. For example, will the client need models and a set or several locations? You can also factor in a sliding scale depending on the number of images purchased. For instance, the first image is $400 and every image thereafter is $350.
